I loved this novel! Another hit for Hannah Howell. I enjoy reading novels that take you out of your world and into their world seemlessly and this is what Highland Chieftain did for me. I highly recommend this novel.

I really enjoyed Bethoc and Callum's story!

Bethoc finds an injured Callum and of course does everything in her power to nurse him back to health. But because of her home situation and the men that attacked Callum, they must keep him hidden. As they spend time together, they of course, develop feelings. Callum feels the need to protect Bethoc and between trying to find his attackers does his best to help her situation. Can these two get through all their issues to find their HEA?

This was a great addition to the Murray Family series!

I picked this book up almost a ear ago with the intention of reading it, but life got in the way and I put it down. Fast forward to November when I pick the book back up and really dive in.... At first I was interested. There was so much potential with the characters, but the storyline was so weak, even though the plot was completely original, that I had a hars time getting to involved. The timeline jumped ao much that I was having a hard time keeping track of events and people. This book had all the ingredients to make a fantastic story, but sadly it was just too under cooked for my tastes.

Bethoc Matheson lives in an abusive home, raising her siblings. On her mother’s deathbed, she swore she would take care of her little sister, forcing her to stay with her father. Walking to the cave she hides in, she comes across a severely wounded man. She’s able to help him get to her cave, where she slowly nurses him back to health.
This was a decent book. I felt bad for Bethoc as more and of her father’s deeds become unraveled. I loved how, almost right from the beginning, Callum could sense the abuse and wanted to protect her. Good story. I recommend.

I enjoyed this story, but felt that it wasn't as good as some of her books. The characters were pretty well developed but some parts of the story were just a little too hard to grasp.

As always Ms. Howell has written a great book. This is a page turner. She make you feel like you are one of the characters. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

Another great installment of the Murray clan.

Bethoc has more on her plate than she can handle taking care of her siblings, but when she finds a injured man on the the beach she cannot help but want to help him. As she struggles to hide the fact from an abusive father she finds she cannot help but be drawn to Callum.

Callum is grateful for the beautiful lass that has saved him. He worries over her as he can tell someone uses a heavy hand on her, but until his broken leg heals he is of no help to anyone. Plus he must find the young boy in his charge. When by per coincidence he finds that the boy is in Bethoc care he cannot help but worry more over the safety of the woman that has risked so much. When trouble comes calling and Bethoc is accused of murder he finds he must do everything in his power to rescue the one woman he could love. Now the question is will she be able to love him back given his dark past.

Great story of two people both suffering abuse at the hands of others, but not letting it break them.

Highland Chieftain is the twenty first book in the Murrays series by Hannah Howell. Each of these books can be read on their own, however having read at least one of the books in the series will give readers a feel for some of the surprises that the book is likely to offer.

Responsible for protecting her younger siblings from their abusive father, Bethoc Matheson is in no position to rescue another soul in Scotland. Yet when she sees a bleeding man on the verge of drowning, that's exactly what she does, securing him safely in a cave where she can return day after day to tend to his wounds. Sir Callum MacMillan can scarcely believe such a slight lass as Bethoc could save him from the grasp of death. But he knows the telltale marks of an angry fist on her skin, and he knows she has the soul of a fighter within her feminine frame. Raised to be a protector of the weak by his Murray clansmen, Callum would prefer to be the one saving her—and save her, he will. If he can first survive the treacherous attack that led him into her irresistible arms.

Highland Chieftain is a return to a series that I feel like I have not read in a long time. While only vaguely connected to the books I had read, I still knew what to expect. Both Bethoc and Callum have been through horrible things, and are fighting their way through another round of trouble. However, even after facing abusive beginnings and having the issues that that can cause, they are both people bent on helping and protecting others. I love that Bethoc is willing to trust others, though not in a way that puts her more at risk. Granted she is a lucky Murray family member with a special gift that helps with that. Callum's history is more brutal, and described in less detail, but his fears and issues are so real for those that have experienced such abuse. While so much of the relationship could be solved early on with talk and working through their issues, I found the resolution and the people they interact with on the way to be an enjoyable part of the story- while it normally makes me antsy to get to the conclusion. It offered me exactly what I was expecting- a wonderful weekend read that I was able to escape into.

Highland Chieftain was a nice return to the story of the extended Murray family and Howell's writing style. I know I missed a few books from this series, but this is a nice comfort read for me. Yes, bad things happen- but love, understanding, and family win out and true love is the victor. Howell offers another enjoyable, quick read that I enjoyed.

Hannah Howell is well known for her historical romance books. Until now I have only read selections from her Wherlocke series, they are similar to the Murray series in that the families have a genetic trait of sixth sense in some form or another. This special sense t gives the stories a touch of magic and danger as the time periods are dangerous for people who are different. Finding someone who understands and will protect their secret is very important.
In the Highland Chieftain, poor Bethoc Mathieson doesn't even know she is a Murray and what that means. She just knows her mother is dead and the cruel man who has raised her is not her father. When she finds an injured man and helps him her life will change but things get worse before they get better. Bethoc is thrown in jail for a crime she did not commit. Will the man she rescued Callum MacMillan be able to prove her innocence and help her face the new life to come?
I will be sure to look for other books in this series and recommend them to fans of Lynsay Sands.
