Trudy left town when she was fifteen and didn't look back, She's shocked when she inherits her great aunt Gertrude's bookstore and a little at sea. She has dyslexia and never even considered working with boos, much less settling down. Now, though, she's older and has a bit more self esteem so when Kit, a professor at Cambridge turns up, she's open to more than just helping him find a special manuscript. it's a nice read with good characters, Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC,
I have never read a book by Ms Tennent before and I must say this story pushed many emotional buttons. In the first couple of chapters I didn't think I liked Trudy, but as her story unfolded, I liked her best in the story. She has returned to the town of Truhart, a town that brings her no fond memories. Now in a bit of irony, the dyslexic Trudy has inherited her nasty aunt's bookstore. First day back, and she has to hear the cruel remarks of her aunt's friends calling her the slow one bringing back bad memories. Trudy plans to sell and clean up the bookstore and sell it, then leave, back to her successful life she has made for herself. Sh e meets a handsome Brit professor named Kit who is dumpster diving through the books she is discarding. They begin to connect and as she goes through the bookstore, find a little of what her heart has been looking for. I liked Kit, but he wasn't always truthful with Trudy because of his own baggage. I liked the changes in some of the people like Trudy, but I didn't like that petty small town feel when adults were so cruel to a teen-aged girl who lost a mother. I haven't read more in this series, so I don't know if this would be a town I would like to live in. A good well written story that triggers some buttons.
