I am a big fan of crime thrillers and police procedurals and absolutely loved this book. Very well written, the book kept me engaged from page one to the end. The "protagonist" was excellently characterized. Of course I am a sucker for a female lead character who is courageous, smart and bold with a solid sense of sarcasm and humor. Great story line begging to be a series--and I really hope there will be--a serial killer, human nature at play, investigational skills, a hunk of a law enforcer--all had me enthralled and to use a cliche, the book was un-put-downable. The latter half was rather reminiscent of "Columbo" my favorite detective series--where the crime and criminal are known and the investigation follows.
Well done, Jennifer Harlow, you've got a die-hard fan in me! Please do make this a series!
I just cannot believe I let this book stew for so long before I got to it and started reading. I knew this was going to be a good one when I started. I read the author's Galilee Falls a long time back and I remember enjoying that one.
The minute I started reading, I knew I would love this one. Iris seemed just like the perfect character and the case had the right amount of intrigue. I love those mysteries where the adversary is smart and worthy and the lead has to resort to using all the tricks to finally get the better of him, instead of waiting for him to slip up. And this is like that.
Iris and Luke have an amazing dynamic and when Iris snapped out of her self guilt and her bare existence, it was great to see her. The way she analyses things and when she figured out the culprit, it was quite amazing. I really love strong female leads and that's what I got from this one. The mystery is very fast paced and yet, you keep thinking about what's coming ahead, and how it will end, what will be the final showdown. That's the mark of a great book, that it makes you want to read to find out what is happening. I could not for the life of me guess what was happening ahead and I loved that.
And this book also made me wonder about how little importance we give to emotions. Our emotions and to healing. If only we paid attention to healing, we would be better versions of ourselves. But we hide those emotions and that only causes more pain and trouble. This book reinforced my line of thought.
