For once, Mercy was minding her own business, heading to the convenience store, a necessary step to feed chocolate chip cookies to a horde of video game playing werewolves, when she got caught in a near-deadly kidnapping plot. Unconscious and very badly injured, she was hauled all the way across the Atlantic ocean, in Italy, far from everyone she knows and cut off from her pack bound. How will she get out of this one alive?
The Mercy Thompson series has been one of my favorite for years and I am happy to say this novel did not disappoint. It actually made me fall in love all over again with my favorite characters! As much as I love my heroines getting the guy of their dream along a book series, couple lives can get a bit dull around the corners so I was very happy that I would get to see Mercy, and Adam, on their own in this novel. There is just this special and desperate energy going on when you are facing extremely dangerous situations by yourself and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Mercy’s determination, resourcefulness, and surviving skills were at the fore-front and I truly enjoyed it. I loved her spunk and the way she built on her coyote skills in this novel. On the other hand, I loved how Adam was forced to let Mercy deal with things on her own and how he had to develop his negotiating skills in a dire situation. Honey, a character I wasn’t a fan off in the past, also happily surprised me. I did not expect it from her, but she really rose to the challenge.
This novel has a very special time-line and you have to pay close attention if you don’t want to be confused. Add to it narration alternating between Mercy, Adam and other important characters and you have a recipe for chaos (if you don’t follow along!) or sheer genius (if you pay close attention lol). Briggs really took her story-telling skills up a notch in this installment, and I’ll tell you off the bat she threw one spectacular curve-ball that made me want to re-read the novel as soon as possible.
I don’t think I could ever tire of these characters and it’s a shame we have to wait so long between installments. I’m already super impatient for the next novel to release! If you haven’t picked up this series yet, I urge you to start with the first novel, Moon Called, and I am sure you will crave for more!
Fans of Mercy Thompson will love this new story! On a routine trip to the corner store for groceries, Mercy is violently kidnapped by an unknown person and her bond with Adam is temporarily silenced. As Adam and his crew piece together information to determine where she is and who took her, she uses all of her skill and ingenuity to escape and stay one step ahead of her kidnapper. Along the way several new characters are introduced, and new information is revealed for other, well-known characters. Exciting, engaging, and fast paced!
I had a lot of fun while reading SILENCE FALLEN. The author gives fair warning at the start to pay attention to Mercy’s notes at the start of the chapters, and that the timeline would be less than linear. This back and forth in the timeline made the book even more interesting in my opinion. Rather than detracting from the story, it added an interesting element to see how it all panned out. Very fun!
I’ll keep things vague to avoid spoilers, but I have to talk about my absolute favorite part of this book. There’s one hell of a twist near the end of MERCY BOOK that is simply utter perfection. I was thoroughly enjoying every moment while reading, especially all of Mercy’s penchant for trouble, but once we got to the twist part, I literally cheered out loud, disturbing my husband in his sleep in the wee hours of the morning. It just answered a long running question/issue for me with the series, and I couldn’t adore the author possibly any more for her choice in this matter. In fact, this twist was so incredible that as soon as I finished the book, I already made plans to start a re-read the next evening in order to catch all the clues that had been leading up to that incredible twist. If it says anything about the quality of this book, it was even better the second time.
I adore each and every Mercy book, but this one? It simply blew it out of the park for me. This book proves once and for all the Mercy series is by far one of the best there is. Run, do not walk, and get this book immediately!
4.5/5
It's such a different experience to read an exceptional book instead of an ordinary one, peeps. I always thought of Mercy Thompson series as the former, not the latter, and Silence Fallen only strengthened my admiration for Patricia Briggs' talent.
It's well-paced despite the separation into two timelines. Mercy's POV is a few days ahead of Adam's, and they are also some distance away from each other geographically.
It's written carefully and lovingly, setting up a world-building we are not used to as the action takes the heroes to Europe.
Prague is enchanting, from cobbled streets and bakeries to kind strangers, and the author shows its atmosphere and people really well.
Apart from Adam and Mercy, I enjoyed seeing Elizaveta, Honey, Stephen and Marsilia who made for a surprisingly strong team, and I loved the new character of Bonarata, who was wonderfully complex.
Mercy's powers evolved again due to her uncanny ability to land smack in the middle of major trouble and blow it to smithereens, and of course, hers and Adam's love for each other and the pain of their separation shone throughout the book and made me very sentimental.
Loved it, thought it was gorgeous and very comforting as good urban fantasy goes. Totally recommended.
I’ve been a fan of the Mercy Thompson series since the day I picked up a copy of Moon Called almost 10 years ago now, so I was more than a little excited to receive a review copy of this book a couple months ago. Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs is an action-packed read from beginning to end and probably my favorite book in the series so far. I enjoyed this book enough that I actually read it twice in a row. I don’t often read a book and then flip back to the first page and start it all over again but that’s exactly what I did with this one.
If I’m going to be completely honest I have to say that I’m more than a little surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this book. I think the best part of the Mercy Thompson books have always been the characters and the way that Mercy interacts or conflicts with them, so I was a little bit worried that Mercy being stranded on her own in a foreign land would make it difficult for me to enjoy this book. I obviously worried for nothing, Patricia Briggs is a fantastic author and she did an amazing job of introducing Mercy to a bunch of new friends, allies, and enemies that I really enjoyed reading about. I really hope that we get to see them again in future books!
One of the best parts of this book was watching Mercy get removed from her comfort zone and the support system she has built up for herself over the course of the series and be thrust into the unknown politics of the European werewolves and vampires. Silence Fallen also gives Mercy the perfect opportunity to show people that she is capable of surviving without the Pack to protect her. I won’t spoil things for anyone but I can’t wait to see how the events of this book will affect the future of the series. I think Mercy, Adam, and the Pack will be dealing with the fallout of this books events for a long time to come.
I think it really goes to show you what kind of relationship the author has created between Mercy and Adam that it felt unnatural for them to be separated for so much of the book. I would have to say that Adam’s viewpoints were my least favorite part of Silence Fallen and it wasn’t because they were boring or anything, but because of how wrong it felt for such a viewpoint to even be needed. Adam and Mercy are not meant to be apart.
I don’t think I can really say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. I don’t know how I’m going to manage the wait for the next book in the series, I already want it right now. My only consolation is that I haven’t’ listened to the audiobook yet and I just got the email telling me my pre-order is ready to be downloaded. I know what I’m going to be doing for the next 8 or 9 hours I think.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First off, let me make clear that I have a bit of a long standing love affair with this series. Not only have I read every book so far, but most of them I've read more than once. Some more than twice. I love the characters, the writing, the world building. I love it all. Fortunately, Silence Fallen was no exception.
"Poor little one," he crooned, cupping my face. "It was not my intention to hurt you."
I really wasn't myself. I am generally very good about accommodating megalomaniacal egomaniacs and waiting until it was safe to torment them. I had grown up doing that. But my head hurt, and he was creeping me out.
"Epic failure," I told him. "I'll have you know that I expect my archenemies to be competent."
So Mercy is still her typical saucy, spunky style. Yet, due to a miscommunication she has found herself the target of a hugely powerful enemy overseas. Yet as usual, the enemy underestimated just how resourceful our coyote could be. Reading about her European adventures was an absolute delight. Of course I love her relationship with Adam, but it's a wonderful thing that she never loses sight of her true strength.
Of course, seeing the different factions that come together for her benefit was inspiring as well. I could only hope to be the kind of person who helps and inspires so many people that my enemies have no chance at defeating my support group.
As usual, I devoured this in short order, and despite my satisfaction I was left wishing it didn't have to end. ~ George, 5 howling stars.
It's no secret that I'm totally in love with the Mercy Thompson series, in fact it's one of my all time favorites! And the best part is that it isn't over yet!
Silence Fallen is the newest installment by author Patricia Briggs and pretty much rocks from beginning to end. This one is done a little differently than previous installments, and is told in the altering view points of both Mercy and Adam, with overlapping time lines. Not many authors can pull of that kind of thing but Briggs really makes it work.
We get to follow Mercy as she is thrown into the chaos that is her birthright as Coyote's daughter, and finds herself far from home with only her wits to guide her. Honestly though that is where Mercy excels, when times get tough and it seems like there is no way out Mercy finds a way.
Plenty of action, sneaky vampire politics, and even a bit of my favorite, the Marok, Bran. All in all, wonderful read, highly recommended!
If you want the short version of this review it is simple, Silence Fallen is another amazing book by Patricia Briggs, and it will leave you craving more from Mercy and the gang.
As for more details, not only are readers given a more detailed glimpse different supernatural creatures, such as the goblins and the golem (which I LOVED the golem addition), but readers are also given a much more detailed view into the world’s supernatural political arena, including the Prague werewolf packs and why they don’t speak with Bran’s packs, and the European vampires and why Marsilia and Stefan left Europe (also how absolutely terrifying Jacob is).
Speaking of the Golem, it was such a great addition to the story. It is such a great magical creature and story that are so often overlooked, and on top of that, Briggs’ retelling of the magic that formed the Golem, coupled with the Golem’s interactions with Mercy were absolutely magical. Speaking of magic, once again we are shown that Mercy’s magic is something clearly not meant to be trifled with. On top of that, it is also clear that we have only seen the tip of her magic, and I personally can’t wait to see more.
As for the pacing and structure, while I am not always the biggest fan of jumping between character’s perspectives once a series has set a predictable pattern of character POV, I have to hand it to Briggs that she has masterfully managed these feats in Silence Fallen. Not only does she jump between character perspectives (including a new character who turns into such a great surprise) but she also jumps between time to more fully utilize the action and suspense in this story, something that could also easily be done incorrectly. In my opinion, it is these details that make Silence Fallen different from and even more enthralling than the other great books in the Mercy Thompson series.
As I mentioned above, Silence Fallen is amazing and I fully recommend it. It’s action filled, well-paced, tense, and absolutely leaves readers wanting more in the series. All in all, a great book.
I love Mercy! If you don't know her, don't start here, this is not a stand-alone book.
Having chapters from different points of view, as well as Mercy being without her allies for much of this book, make this a very different entry in the series. It is reminiscent of the early books before Mercy and Adam were mated, but very New and fresh as well. We get to know some series regulars much better and get a few new characters. Larry the Goblin King is a favorite and sure to return. There were a few big twists, one of which really got me. I'm a mystery reader and I was had, big time! I enjoyed every minute of this read, no slow spots at all.
Mercy is certainly in a mess this time. It seems someone named her as the most powerful person in the Tri-Cities and that leads to her abduction. What follows is a tension filled story that is full of surprises. Mercy ends up in Europe and takes things into her own hands to escape. Adam follows her trail. He does not travel alone. It was fun to watch Mercy as she uses all of her skill to escape and travel from Italy to Prague. In the meantime Adam has other problems that he has to solve before he can leave Italy and go to Prague. There are a lot of twists in the story. I was really surprised to find out the real identity of one of the characters. See if you catch on before the end of the book.
After missing the previous book I was unsettled as to whether I would be able to pick this book up. I was mistaken. I enjoyed this book IMMENSELY! While reading I remembered why I loved these books and just how banged up Mercy gets. I love that she has humor and a bright outlook even faced with the nearly impossible in her case. She manages to get out of her situations in a spectacular fashion and I love reading about her. I can't wait for her next adventure and will have to re read the series thus far.
The Mercy Thompson series from Patricia Briggs is one of those series I both have to read the book and listen to the audiobook as soon as it is released. I absolutely adore everything about the Mercy Thompson series. Silence Fallen is the first book to give the reader the point of view from both Mercy and Adam. While it took a bit for me to get used to it with the audiobook, I did like having both points of view and even ended up liking having two different narrators.
I enjoyed Silence Fallen and thought it was a great addition to the Mercy Thompson series. Since Mercy was kidnapped and separated from Adam from much of the book, I did miss the connection and time with them. I did really love how strong Mercy was though everything she had to deal with in Italy and Prague. Honestly if there was ever a character who has the right to totally breakdown, it is Mercy, but she remains as strong as ever.
I also enjoyed watching Adam have to team up with the vampires to help him rescue Mercy. Adam usually has Mercy as a buffer when dealing with the vampires, but I enjoyed seeing the vampires work with Adam and his werewolves to deal with one of the world's strongest vampires so they could finally find Mercy. As the book goes back and forth between Adam's and Mercy's points of view, and not on a solid timeline, I liked that Mercy gave updates before each chapter to let the readers know where we were in the story.
Silence Fallen was another winner in the Mercy Thompson series. Again, while I missed Mercy and Adam being together the entire book, I did like seeing both characters grow more in this book. I also got many unexpected laughs from Silence Fallen and feel like Doctor Who fans will as well.
Rating: 4 Stars (B+)

In a Flutter: Full of paranormal political intrigue yummies!
Fluttering Thoughts:
Worldbuilding: The Mercy Thompson world is full of paranormal/fantasy elements (witches, vampires, shifters, ghosts, fae/goblins) combined in intricate political dynamics between and inside the packs, seethes, kingdoms, and all. I really, really love this diverse and intricate world!
Characters: Mercy did a bit of self-discovery in Silence Fallen, being forced to be on her own for a bit and thereby take a look at her relationship with Adam and her family life, at herself and her motives – and most importantly, at her own resources, be it intrinsic or diplomatic. I thought it was also a reaffirmation of her ability to wreak havoc all on her own, lol! In a way, it was a bit of a recap that someone like me – who started the series with book #9 – can really use and enjoy at such an advanced point in the series. Her time apart from Adam also reaffirmed their romance, and I enjoyed it.
It was fun seeing Adam on his own(ish), doing stuff and getting things done, as he tried to get his mate back. I really loved the fact that despite him being a badass alpha, and having all sorts of connections and resources, he did some diplomatic finessing while Mercy handled her own thing. Seeing them apart somehow emphasized for me the strength of their couple.
Plot: The story was an interesting mix of elements, paranormal political intrigue, ongoing romance, the suspense and action we’ve come to expect from UF in general and a Mercy Thompson story in particular – all of it in a somewhat slower tempo than I might have expected. I had the sense that things were moving along a bit too slowly in the beginning, but the tempo picked up from somewhere around a quarter into the novel and kept increasing until the awesome end.
Writing: First person, past tense narrative, Mercy’s POV, combined with some third person, past tense narrative bits as things happened in Adam’s part of the story. I liked the style and Mercy’s fun voice was as awesome as always. Personal pet peeve though, there were some parallel/not-quite-parallel timelines going on, as things happened in one of two sides of the story.
Curb Appeal: Fantabulous cover, hooking blurb, auto-buy series/author name for my UF cravings.
I really enjoyed Silence Fallen and felt like the story picked up toward the end – no cliffy! -, making me feel like there’s still so much goodness coming our way via the ever-fun, ever-havoc-wreaking Mercy Thompson.
I recommend Silence Fallen to fans of UF with diverse, intricate political paranormal worlds, and to those who enjoy exciting stories of thrilling worlds and strong MCs who manage to always get in trouble and get out of it with style xD Go, Mercy, go!
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.
Silence Fallen (A Mercy Thompson Novel) will have you wanting more Mercy and Adam! Mercy and the grange are having a not so quiet evening at home playing swashbuckling video games. What could possibly go wrong? Everything can with Mercy! It is like she is a magnet pulling trouble to her. She is in the kitchen making cookies for the pirates in the other room, when she has to go to the store to get eggs. As she is leaving the convince store parking lot she is kidnapped from her car after it is hit. Adam and the rest of the pack is alerted to Mercy being in trouble by the pack bond. They rush to where she was, to find out they were too late. To make matters worse, the kidnappers have taken Mercy overseas. She can't rely on the pack bond, because she is too far for Adam and her to make a connection. Now she has to rely on herself and strangers in a strange land with no money, phone or computer. Just what she was taken in.
This sets up a whole new type of trouble for Mercy! Poor Adam is going out of his mind trying to locate her. All in all, it is a great read. I recommend this book to everyone. If you have not started this series, what is wrong with you? Seriously, you will enjoy them!! I give Silence Fallen 5/5 stars!!! Now *twiddling thumbs* the wait begins until the next book.
I'm afraid to say too much and give spoilers...but this book does NOT disappoint! Briggs is an autobuy for me, and for a reason - no one tops her on world-building, character development, plot, or good old emotional pull in her stories.
The only down side is now I have to wait a year for the next book...at least she only gets better with each re-read!
Mercy Thompson Hauptmann has had an eventful life ... a flighty mother, raised by the Marrok (the grand alpha of all werewolves) and marrying the Alpha werewolf of Tri-Cities. Things always seem to smooth out for a little respite then she is in trouble again. Now she has been attacked and taken from Tri-Cities with her captures planning to use her as a weapon. They underestimate Mercy in her coyote form and she manages to escape, but she finds herself without help and lost in Europe. With the SILENCE FALLEN between her, Adam and the pack, she must find a way to contact them, but in the meantime she has to find help. All she has to do is figure out friend from foe.
All I can say about this addition of author Patricia Briggs “Mercy Thompson” series is ... amazing! The set up takes us out of Tri-Cities and puts Mercy back to being the lone wolf (OK so she is a coyote but I think you know what I mean) from the days before her marriage. She has a bond with her husband that allows them to “speak” to each other and that bond has been broken throwing her, Adam and the pack into a frenzy of worry. She has to depend on her instincts while struggling to find a way to contact her husband and their pack or even the vampires and witches she knows.
Having never been to Europe, I felt that Ms. Briggs did an amazing job of making readers feel as if they really were there with Mercy. The descriptions brought it all to life in a vibrant and clear way. I did find a couple of pages that might have been a bit too descriptive and didn't really add anything, but didn't hurt except take the reader away from the main topic.
I also loved the different POV chapters, it always helps to know what the others are doing while Mercy is trying to escape and survive. This is something that I have found other authors doing and completely enjoy it ... I love to know what the other party is doing, thinking and feeling. Helps push the story along and give readers a deeper understanding of all the missing parts as they come together.
If you love the Mercy Thompson series, ghosts, vampires, a strong heroine who isn't going to back down despite feeling outnumbered and a wolf who will move mountains to get his mate back then SILENCE FALLEN will hit the mark.

When Mercy is abducted and whisked abroad by an enemy she finds herself completely alone in a strange country with none of her usual allies on hand to turn to. We've all seen Mercy get herself out of difficult situations in the past but finding her way home from Europe with no money, no passport and no assistance might just be one mess she can't handle. Of course Adam immediately mounts a rescue mission but he's up against powerful enemies and Mercy is a long way away so it's vital that she holds on long enough for him to reach her.
I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Silence Fallen and I devoured it as soon as it arrived on my kindle. I loved it so much that I had to go away and reread the entire series (both Mercy's books and the Alpha & Omega ones!) so I could read it again at the correct point in the timeline. This is one of the few series that really does get better and better with every book and I love it more each time I reread it. I'll admit I was a bit disappointed when I found out that Mercy and Adam would be separated for much of the story but when I realised that we'd be getting a very large chunk of the book in Adam's POV it more than made up for my worries.
Mercy may be the star of this series but her relationship with Adam is integral and I loved the chance to spend more time in his head to see exactly how he was dealing with things. They both have very important roles to play in this book, Mercy manages to escape but has to try and stay out of their enemy's clutches while Adam is forced to take a more passive role as a negotiator to try and make sure their enemy knows he's messed with the wrong pack of werewolves. I thoroughly enjoyed both of their storylines and I loved the way Patricia Briggs played around with the timeline so cleverly. The story unfolds in a nonlinear fashion so it jumps around a little and you need to pay attention but it really helped to add extra tension.
I've never considered Mercy to be a helpless character and she proves her resilience again here, she may not be as strong as the vampires and werewolves physically but she's smart and cunning and she knows how to use that to her advantage. People constantly underestimate her and that's always their undoing but I love watching her worm her way out of impossible situations. Adam is out of his mind with worry when Mercy is taken, especially because he knows how badly she was injured and he isn't there to protect her or make sure she's safe. He will call in any favour he has to to get to her but he trusts her to keep herself safe in the meantime. I love that Adam is the one person who knows exactly what Mercy is capable of, that never stops him worrying about her or wanting to protect her but he also respects her need to be independent and stand on her own two feet.
I don't want to give anything else away about the plot but I loved the change of setting and really enjoyed getting to meet a whole bunch of new characters both friends and foe. I've found the pack politics has been getting a little annoying in the more recent books (although thankfully that seems to have been solved in Fire Touched) so it was nice to take a step away from home and avoid some of the pack members who have been causing trouble lately. Of course Adam isn't alone when he mounts is rescue mission so you'll see a few familiar faces which is always nice. I was actually surprised about how much I ended up liking a character I've loved to hate in previous books. The story had me totally hooked from beginning to end and I didn't want to put it down even the second time I read it. If there is one thing I would change it would be to have a longer section at the end after Mercy and Adam been reunited - not because the story needed it but because I'm greedy and I adore spending time with them as a couple! This is one of my favourite urban fantasy series, it's a comfort read that I revisit at least once a year and again I've been left itching to get my hands on the next instalment.

Whenever a new Mercy Thompson books comes out, I make sure to clear a day so I can savor the story. So many series falter a bit by book five, but Patricia Briggs had not disappointed me. Did you see notice I wrote had, and not has, while book 10 is still good, it’s not as great as the previous nine in the series.
At first I thought it was just because the story style is a bit different. Normally it’s Mercy telling the story, but this time it was also the Alpha of the pack, Adam. After thinking about it more, I realized I enjoyed Adam’s voice, and didn’t mind at all how the story jumped around a bit, and didn’t have a linear time line.
I kept trying to figure out why I wasn’t drawn into this one as much, and I think it’s because Briggs included more history into this story, and not as much action as her previous books. While I do enjoy learning about new places, I guess I’ve just come to expect a lot of action from this series.
I give Briggs kudos for trying something different, and while I didn’t enjoy it as much, that doesn’t mean that others won’t. And this will definitely not stop me from picking up the next book in this series.
SILENCE FALLEN had a different feel to me than the other books in the Mercy Thompson series. For most of the book, Mercy is on her own as she escapes her kidnapper and navigates a country she doesn't know on the path to safety. It started off really slow, but did pick up speed and explored some of the little known about abilities that Mercy possesses.
I was constantly left in suspense and the twists and turns thrown into SILENCE FALLEN were spectacular. The allies that come along for the ride to save Mercy couldn't have been better picked and I enjoyed reading from Adam's POV throughout the story—although I like the couple much better when they aren't apart.
We have been through TEN Mercy books so far, I hope we get many many more. I enjoyed the different environment that SILENCE FALLEN brought to the table, but I really do look forward to seeing Mercy back on her home turf again and among her pack.
