Silence Fallen kicks off with a bang as Mercy is abducted and taken to Europe by vampires. What do they want and how will she get away?
As usual Mercy survives by her wits, thinking things through quickly and using hard won experience to her advantage. Mercy is away from Adam and her Pack for most of the book, but before you go panicking, let me reassure you Adam is still very much a part of the story and we get his POV more than we have in any other books in the past. I loved it! Got to “see” just how much Mercy means to Adam, and how living with his wolf is more of a struggle than I knew.
It was interesting to get a bit of Marsilia, Stefan and Wulfe’s history, why they came to America. It was interesting to see Marsilia in a little different light, and not as awful as she usually is.
Patricia Briggs has crafted one of my all-time favorite female characters in Mercy. Her intelligence shines with every problem she encounters. Mercy ponders things through like body language, repercussions of action, and what she says, weighing possible outcomes, doing this pretty quickly!
Silence Fallen is another amazing installment in the Mercy Thompson series! I was almost glad I was sick this weekend because it gave me an excuse to sit home and read this straight through. It took me longer to finish than an average book, because I didn’t want to miss anything! There were a few twists, and one surprise I did not see coming. The reveal was worked in very quietly, too, IMO. All around it was a riveting read, one of the best in the Mercy Thompson series!
It's been a long time coming since the last Mercy Thompson book and I have eagerly been awaiting this one. A lot has happened in this series that has changed the dynamic of the characters and their world. The Fae,Vampires and the Columbia Basin Pack have come a long way since the first book and we can really thank Mercy for all of that. So much so that Mercy is kidnapped and is taken to the other side of the world by a powerful vampire. Mercy, no matter how down and out she may seem, is not without her resources and quickly escapes. What follows is a tromp throughout Europe to find her way back home. Told in alternating POV of Adam and Mercy, it's a race to "save" Mercy and this will take friend and foe alike.
"I looked like a victim.
I was done, really done with being a victim."
I love Patricia Briggs writing because she adds these touches of lore in the series that I absolutely love. I remembered vaguely about the Golem of Prague from tales I'd read so long ago and I adore how she incorporated the story and uses it with Mercy's abilities. I honestly could not stop reading.
“My love,” he said, his voice intent. “You are welcome to all that I am, all that I have. I would destroy the planet for you."
Adam is not without his own difficulties trying to get his wife back and this was probably the most epic assortment of characters to band together to get her back. Because really, Mercy doesn't have any real powers, per se, and yet has an affinity for making the oddest of friends and allies. Yes, she can change into a Coyote instantaneously and her abilities with ghosts, which are amazing in their own right. But Mercy evokes a sort of loyalty and that's what makes her one of my favorite characters of all time.
I was enthralled from the first to the last page of the book (and audiobook because I love Lorelei King narrating), and the ending was so surprising to me and gave me a bit of a belly laugh. I start to go back to some parts in my head and really understanding what happened in certain parts that clicked when I read that last revelation. So I leave this review with another Mercy and Adam scene (one of my favorite power couples) and a solid five stars for another great installment. Please don't make me wait another for the next because I don't think I'll make it that long.
The shower was clear glass, and Adam had his back to me. I leaned against the doorframe and smiled.
“You going to watch my butt all day, or are you going to join me?” asked my mate.
“What if I had said I was going to watch your butt all day?” I asked curiously as I opened the door and stepped into the hot water.
“I’ve been considering belly-dancing lessons,” he told me in a serious voice. His arms were tight around me, and he pulled me hard into him. “It would have given you something to watch. But I’m not sure if I could hold my head up around other Alpha werewolves if I did.”
This is my very first book in the Mercy Thompson series and I am wondering how I am just discovering it now. Oh Em Gee! It was freaking AWESOME! This here exactly is the kind of series I live for. So much action, twists and turns that keep me guessing, but the main thing is Mercy. Strong but slightly flawed, honestly I haven't been this excited about a character since Cat.
Let me start with what drew me in to read a well-established series that I had no knowledge of: the blurb. A coyote shifter mated to an alpha werewolf and abducted by a vampire who then escapes and finds herself alone in Europe. Whoa! That's a lot to take in and yet, it hit all my curious buttons. Why would vamps take her and why would a coyote be with a werewolf? Well, I got my first question answered but I think the answer to the second would lay somewhere in one of those unread volumes.
Anyhow, can I just say how much I like Mercy! The story is told mainly from her first person POV and gave me quite the nice introduction to her. The situation she finds herself in, being abducted, is dangerous and yet, she manages to find a way to getaway. And may I just add they way she managed to get away from Lenka, had me gasping and chuckling at the same time. Very resourceful!
That resourcefulness pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the book. Despite not understanding all the players (Now who exactly is this Matt Smith?) I still enjoyed them. There's plenty of twists and harrowing moments for Mercy to keep things moving at a fast pace. The further I got into the book, the harder it was to put down.
I know others have talked about a big reveal at the end and for others, I'm sure it was a shocker. Unfortunately, as I'm new to the series, I didn't think it was a big deal and that is totally my fault. Maybe after starting the series from the beginning, my opinion will change. And I WILL start this series from the beginning! Patricia Briggs has found herself a new fan, one that will be sharing this series.

I received Silence Fallen in return for review from the publisher.
Mercy is making cookies but is forced to run to the store for more chocolate chips which should be a routine trip. However, while leaving the store her SUV is hit and she's kidnapped by a strange vampire who wants more than he let's on. She finds herself in a strange country with a dangerous threat looming forced to risk it she flees into a strange countryside. All she has to do is find a safe place to hide till Adam and the crew can get to her but as it's Mercy it may be hard to do.
When his wife is kidnapped by strange vampires Adam will stop at nothing to bring her back. Even teaming up with the Vampire master of the city who happens to have a connection to the vampire who kidnapped Mercy. They will need to play their cards just right if they want to find her getting out of Milan won't be an easy task but they are willing to enter the lion's den for her. With friends at his back hopefully, Adam can keep his cool long enough to save Mercy who holds them all together.
I love Mercy so much!!! She's one of my favorite characters and has been since I read her first book Moon Called years ago. She's one of those characters who captures your heart and as she just keeps evolving through the books you love her more. She's got a special place in my heart, and will always be my favorite coyote. I love Adam he's a perfect partner for her because he really understands her in ways no one else would.
I've been eagerly waiting to get my hands on Silence Fallen and when I finally had the chance to dive right in it was hard to put down. I actually finished it in just 24 hours and would have been quicker if not for this cold. I love the world the author has created mixing the werewolves with the vampire and fae all living in the Tri-Cities it just works so well. Silence Fallen is an action-packed, whirlwind adventure, that pushes Mercy to accept her destiny a little more and Adam to play the game. The author has done another amazing job creating a captivating story that is hard to put down, capturing the heart as well as the imagination. I love all the twists and turns throughout the story. I highly recommend taking a chance on Mercy Thompson's books you won't be disappointed they just keep getting better with each book. I loved it so much!!!!
Mercy runs to the local convenience store for some last minute baking items when she's run off the road and kidnapped. She wakes alone, in Europe, with no way to contact the pack. Mercy is no stranger to saving herself, but she's never been completely alone and cutoff from everyone she knows and loves.
When Adam discovers Mercy's wrecked vehicle and can't contact her through their mating bond or by more mundane means, he nearly loses it. Thankfully cooler heads prevail and the pack starts hunting for Mercy. Once they realize she's been whisked away to Europe as some kind of power-play between the vampires, Adam is able to settle enough to make plans to retrieve her. Unfortunately, Mercy escapes before he's able to get to her. But Adam trusts Mercy to take care of himself, so he continues on his diplomatic trip to see the Master of Milan.
In the meantime Mercy finds herself in Prague, dealing with a Golem and a not-quite-enemy werewolf alpha who grants her sanctuary, but seems to have a vampire problem himself.
More from Adam's POV!!
<blockquote><em>We have to hunt</em>, Adam whispered to the wild spirit who shared his body, the wild spirit he both despised and gloried in.<em> We have to hunt, find Mercy, and destroy the one who took her from us. And teach them that Mercy is ours.</em>
And inside him, the wolf paused, considering Adam’s argument. After a moment, the beast agreed.</blockquote>
One of the things I love best about this series is the progression of the relationship between Mercy and Adam. They're a solid couple who rely on each other, but also trust one another enough that they don't need to live in each other's pockets. Now that things have settled down with Mercy and the pack, the strength of their relationship really shines through.
Briggs took us into Adam and another's points-of-view, which was a nice change from the previous books. I feel like we got a better sense of Mercy for having seen her from an outside perspective (the books are generally told first person from Mercy's point-of-view). This from Marsilia, Mistress of the local vampire seethe, especially stood out for me.
<blockquote>“It doesn’t do to underestimate Mercedes, <em>Jacob</em>, something that I had to learn, too. Did she give you the spiel she likes to bring out now and again, about how she’s mostly no more powerful than the average human? It is a most effective speech because I think she actually believes it.”</blockquote>
We learned quite a bit about Bran and Mercy in this book. It was good to get another perspective when it comes to some of the relationships Mercy has formed. We see more how Marsilia, Bran, and others view Mercy.
<blockquote>"Bran could not love Mercy more if she were his own daughter. He’s funny about family. The last person who hurt one of his children was his own mother … you do know the story of Beowulf?”</blockquote>
Although the tone of the series tends to be kind of dark, there's some levity. I actually laughed out loud a few times.
<blockquote>“So,” he said softly, “where is your pet werewolf whose job it was … to keep Mercy here, I think you said?”
There was a pause, then the beautiful male vampire to his left said, a hint of amusement in his voice, “She was hit by a bus and is currently recovering.”
And just that easily, Adam’s equanimity was restored.
Adam nodded. “People who stand in the way of my mate’s ability to get herself out of trouble often feel like they were hit by buses. I think this might be the first time it is literally true, though.”</blockquote>
The story jumps around quite a bit and Briggs does a lot more head-hopping than usual, but it really worked. The story was gripping. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.
<strong>4.5 out of 5</strong>
I received an ARC of this novel with thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group, in exchange for a honest and voluntary review.
This book is in both Mercy's POV and Adams POV.
Ok first of all the timeline in this book is a bit screwy. The author/ mercys notes in the book state where it sits on the timeline. .... this is awesome and so helpful.
So you kind of have a Mercy timeline and an Adam Timeline. Its like reading two books at once. Which was very unique in comparison to the other books in the series when they have been Just Mercy's POV and one consistent timeline.
As a fan of the series this change can be taken as good or bad. Good , because it shows that the author is trying something different and trying to engage the reader in a different way. On a side note i really hope we get an adam series or something. I enjoyed the different POVs , usually they confuse the hell out of me and i just end up getting frustrated. But with the author notes and the announcement of the change of POVs -its not a sudden thing, like halfway through a paragraph. Its actually whole chapters devoted to each POV. I found myself embracing the change of POV at times but other times i was like noo get back I wanna know what happens!!
OK So that is the only negative i can see about it. Other loyal fans might not like this new direction the author is going in. But to be fair she experimented with this type of pov change in one of her other books (damn i can't remember the name but i know it happened ).... but not to this extent. And i think has worked out really well.
Now we all know Mercy's way of finding trouble and chaos... its her nature as a coyote walker. Well right in chapter 1 she finds it, by getting kidnapped .
and waking up in Europe, she escapes, and makes her way to a city... any city.
Adam feels the mate bond leave and instantly goes into crazy werewolf possessive find my mate mode. All they know is what they see and have smelled. Blood , Magic, Vampire.
In this story we get to know Marsilla and Elizaveta the russian witch better oh and Zack the mysterious new werewolf. Get introduced to Larry the Goblin King, a few European Vampires, and werewolves oh and ghosts. . Lots and lots of ghosts. Mercy explores that side of her more in this book, and has a lot of interesting results.
this book has made me look into prague and pragues history (why prague you ask... read the book and you will understand). all i knew about golems was from the simpsons. so this book was kind of educational in a way!
Overall opinion
Despite the constant change of POVs, i really enjoyed this. I think it worked. I don't think it would have worked with just the one POV. and i love Adams POV so much i could really see a new series from his time before meeting mercy.... oooh that would be interesting.
I have read every book in this series so far and as this was the tenth book you kind of expect a wrap up of the series.... but it leaves you eager to read more. I don't think Mercy's story is quite finished yet. If anything this book may renew interest in the series!(i know it has for me!) Only time will tell i guess.
I could rave on about this book for ages, i love it that much. But seriously if you buy a copy of this you will not regret it. I do suggest you read the rest of the series first, but only so you know who the characters are and their relationships with each other. Believe me it is all worth it.
Y’all, the Mercy Thompson series is one of my favorite urban fantasy series of all time. Although I have to admit that the Alpha & Omega series is my top fav from Patricia Briggs, there’s nothing like delving back into Mercy and Adam’s story. They were the first I fell in love with from this author, so they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. There’s something different about Silence Fallen compared to the previous books in the series though, and it’s a change I loved – we get more of Adam’s POV! But everything else about this latest installment is classic Mercy Thompson – funny, action-packed, heartwarming, and just plain awesome. This was everything I expected and more from Patricia Briggs!
On her way to the market, Mercy gets kidnapped right from underneath her and her pack’s nose. Usually, when this happens (this has happened a couple times – it’s Mercy), she’s able to contact Adam through their mate bond. But this time, outside magic is preventing her from contacting her husband for help. Mercy is used to trouble though, and manages to escape her prison from Europe’s most powerful vampire… only to find out she’s been taken to Italy, and runs for her life.
Adam and his pack are racing against time to catch up to Mercy. With the help of vampires Stefan and Marsilia, his packmate Honey, the goblin king, a witch, and one Matt Smith (not The Doctor), they’re on their way to Europe and Mercy. But they know she’s tough and a survivor, so she’ll be able to stay alive while Adam deals with paranormal politics with Bonarata. Nearly half the book is in Adam’s POV, which made me so happy. I loved getting inside his head and seeing how he deals with the pack and outsiders. And it was lovely to see how much Adam loves and adores his wife and would do anything to protect her. I really hope Patricia Briggs gives us more of Adam’s POV in future books!
In this novel, we also get to learn more about Mercy’s Coyote heritage, specifically about ghosts. If you thought we knew all there was to know about Mercy, you’d be wrong. She continuously surprises us with the new strengths and powers she possesses. She’s one of my all-time favorite heroines ever – I could read the series for her forever!
If you love urban fantasy and haven’t experienced this series yet, what are you waiting for!? It’s such an incredible, unique world Patricia Briggs has created. The characters are beloved and so entertaining to read about. I seriously enjoyed reading Silence Fallen and can’t wait for the next installment!
Beginning a brand new book, in which you meet new characters and learn a whole new world, is a wonderful experience; but for this reader, there is nothing that compares to sinking back into a favorite series that I know and love so dearly it’s as though I’m visiting my best friends and catching up since our last visit. For me, that is the world of Mercy Thompson. By now, I am very familiar with their politics, rules, pack members, seethe members, and the backstories of every character. I know who I like, who I fear, who I love, who owns my heart, and who I should but can’t stop thinking about. When I began reading Silence Fallen, it was this incredible, comforting, easy feeling… then Ms. Briggs does what she does best, and I was on the edge of my seat and wondering what my Mercy was going to do next. What a thrill ride! I absolutely devoured this storyline. The pacing was perfect and the plot brilliant while running me through a gamut of emotions that I’ve come to expect and love from this author.
If you know Mercy, then you know trouble finds her wherever she may go. Including a nightly run to the 24-hour convenience store to pick up eggs and chocolate chips for the cookies she’s making for the pack. But Mercy is injured in an attack and abducted. When she awakes, she finds she has been taken by the “Big Bad” (extra points for those who get the Buffy reference), aka the most powerful and dangerous vamp there is. He has plans that involve using her to get to Adam, for starters. So Mercy does what she does best and ruins those plans with an escape. But now that she can take in her surroundings, she realizes she is in Europe with no passport, no money, no way to call home – and even the pack bonds aren’t working right. Oh, and she’s naked. Of course.
I won’t divulge anything else plot-wise, so I will share that my favorite character – other than, of course, Mercy, Adam, and Stefan – in this installment was probably Matt Smith (who is not the doctor). He was a wonderful and surprising addition. ;)
This is where I would tell you that I read this in one sitting… but it’s Mercy. Of course I did! I always do. I suspect it’s either pack magic, or a vampire’s kiss, or fae glamour, or maybe Elizaveta’s witchcraft that makes it impossible for me to put these books down once I pick them up. Or maybe – and I’m definitely leaning toward this one – it’s the wizardry that is Patricia Briggs that makes me forgo a night’s sleep and turns me into a word hostage. Twists, turns, and the usual dose of fun, romance, and charm are exactly what Silence Fallen embodies. The new setting is fantastic, and the author’s writing had me completely captivated.
Sometimes I read books that thrill/scare me and leave me with my heart pounding; other times, I read books that leave me curled in a corner sobbing; and some stories leave me feeling pensive. But it is this series that has never, no matter what took place between the pages, left me feeling melancholy. I always have the biggest, goofiest grin on my face when I reach the end. Though I will always be left wanting more visits – because these characters are family – I can’t recall a series that has ever left me feeling so sated and just plain happy. These, along with the graphic novels and the Alpha & Omega series, are my go-to, auto-buy, comfort-read, must-have, must-read books. Silence Fallen is an incredible addition to the series and may be one of my favorite installments so far. Fans of the series won’t be disappointed, and new readers will have something incredible to look forward to.
Mercy is back! This series is such a fun urban fantasy series. We’ve seen Mercy grow from single, independent car mechanic, to the mate of the Tri-Cities Wolf pack. She’s fought and clawed her way through many fae, vampires and werewolves to achieve this new status as one of the strongest people in the area. Needless to say, she is a majorly tough heroine.
The timeline and points of view varied and overlapped a bit. I found it took me some time to get used to. Being overseas, out of everyone’s element was really interesting. We were able to see special places through Mercy’s eyes as she travels across Europe. Taking everyone out of their element definitely put more unknowns in place that kept the story full of new information right from the beginning.
Mercy’s time was mostly spent trying to stay free and cope with her ghostly skills in a town so very old and full of dead. But it wouldn’t be a Mercy Thompson novel if she wasn’t thrown into many different positions that she has to find her way out of. Albeit, we were missing quite a bit of fae action in Silence Fallen, the amount of vampire and werewolf antics were enough to keep Mercy more than busy. She just needed to meet up with Adam. She just had to get back what they lost and it would have gone a lot easier.
Adam’s fight starts right from the beginning when Mercy is taken. He must fight his wolf from the very beginning. Luckily his pack helps him to keep his head together and even deal with the characters that are to be included in retrieving Mercy. They have to pull together a specific mixture of participants, and we even end up with a big surprise. If I hadn’t been discussing this book with a friend, I wouldn’t have clued in that a character was involved a lot earlier than I even thought. My oversight of the clues worked well for me so that I was surprised at the end with everyone else.
I found I was more interested in Adam’s POV of the story most. There seemed to be more action and sly planning going on in his life. I was doing a lot more guessing and tensely waiting to see what was going to happen to everyone. That is not to say I wasn’t into the goings on that Mercy was dealing with. I have to be careful reading her parts as I tend to forget what powers she has and always need refreshers.
Just like you always get with a Mercy Thompson book, there is so much action and excitement that it’s hard to put down. Dying to know what was going to happen next kept me flipping pages and totally engrossed. Silence Fallen was another great installment to the series and I think will lead to some interesting storylines when they get back home.

New York Times bestseller Patricia Briggs returns with another enthralling, adventurous installment of the Mercy Thompson series in SILENCE FALLEN. Fast-paced, the story begins with a kidnapping and continues with Briggs’ trademark humor, adventure, and thrilling plot lines. I was sucked in from the first page to the last. An amazing urban fantasy that sets the standard.
The alternating first person POV from Mercy and third person POV from Adam, Mercy’s mate, made for a deeper, richer experience and put this novel firmly on top as being one of Patricia Briggs’ best to date. Note, this book can be read on its own, but it’s a much better read if you’ve gone through the others in the series preceding this one (the tenth in the series).
Mercy and her cohorts continue to develop. Mercy’s power over the undead matures with surprising results. Seeing Adam working with the different factions to free Mercy from the most powerful vampire in existence, taken out of their element in the Tri-Cities as they maneuver among enemies in Europe, ratcheted the excitement. And as always, Mercy’s nature to adapt and overcome throws her into danger while making new allies.
Briggs consistently entertains, coming up with new and invigorating strategies for our favorite coyote shifter to handle. The addition of a magical golem in Prague, alongside werewolves, witches, and rogue vampires, made this novel in the series particularly entertaining.
I’ve since read the story three times and plan to go back for another read. There’s a reason why Patricia Briggs is on my auto-buy list. She never disappoints!
A RECOMMENDED READ 5+ Hearts!
What has our Mercy gotten herself into this time?
One heck of a story I will tell you that.
It all starts with a need for items for cookie making and then just explodes from there.
And it takes our Mercy on a trip across the ocean.
This series has been a favorite of mine for a long time and this book reminds me why.
It is explosive, so full of action and just so good.
As a self-proclaimed romance junkie, it is a testament to Patricia Briggs' writing that her stories continue to captivate me despite the lack of heat between our protagonists. The action is always steady to fast-paced, with engaging characters and dynamic plot.
In this latest installment following Mercy declaring the tri-cities a safe zone, she is abducted from the territory by a bid bad Italian vampire, Iacopo Bonatara (a/k/a Lord of the Night). Finding herself alone and separated from the pack bonds in Italy, Mercy must find her own way out of this sticky situation. It's a good thing that most people mistake her for a fragile human without much power of her own. This story was reminiscent of earlier books in the series where Mercy was nearly a one-woman show, creating chaos and defeating foes with more luck than skill. We learned a bit more about Mercy's coyote powers, and I hope these are flushed out more in the future. Our girl definitely needs to develop her power now that we don't have the walking stick... (sad face - I liked the stick!)
While Mercy is relying on luck and possibly some supernatural influence, Adam has to go confront the vampire who stole his wife. This takes a seemingly random group of supes to Italy to deal with the Lord of the Night. I enjoyed having Marsilia and Stefan along as they were both absent in the last book, Fire Touched. I particularly enjoyed seeing a different, softer side to Marsilia as she was not dealing with the pack in a combative or controversial situation. The goblins were also an interesting addition and I, like Julie, do not remember them being introduced previously. But there is also a new submissive wolf to keep an eye on - Matt Smith.
There is somewhat of a dual plot happening, so we got dual POVs in this installment. I really liked getting some insight on Adam, and wouldn't mind future books being in this format. The wonky non-linear timeline did take some getting used to - but I found that I did not mind it as we had Mercy's explanatory notes to guide us at the beginning of each chapter. I will say that the plot with Iacopo did get somewhat convoluted and circular, and I'm not sure if I really understood his motivations in the end. But overall, this was a good addition to the series that kept me reading until very late in the night.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Berkley/Ace Books.
I've loved this series from the very beginning and it seems that it just gets better and better. With this latest installment told in multiple point of views of both Mercy, Adam and a certain Mr. Smith, Ms. Briggs really shook things up and breathed fresh life into a series that was already full of it.
I think this might very well be a new favorite for me. I adored the different point of views and the dynamic of the characters and while I wish Mercy and Adam would have been together more because I adore them working as a team and as a couple, it was kind of fun to see them still working together but far apart from one another. Plus, hello, Europe people! As Mercy travels all over, it was fun to see the different packs and covens and how they worked in other countries. And even better we still get all the favorite characters from past books and even meet a few new ones that I truly hope we will be seeing more of in future installments.
This truly is a series that just gets better and one that I can't wait to pick up and read each time a new one comes out.
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, you can't avoid getting into trouble, can you? Darn Coyote.....
The Mercy Thomson series is one of my ultimate favorite series. Mercy has grown so much since Moon Called came out. She is part of a pack, married to an alpha, and has developed extremely powerful friendships without realizing it. She is descended from Coyote, who is not only powerful but loves to create havoc. No wonder Mercy had no chance at a semi-normal life as a woman who can turn into a coyote.
Silence Fallen has our favorite coyote getting kidnapped and taken against her will to Italy in an attempt to get Adam's attention. The big baddie this time is Iacopo Bonorata, Lord of the Night, who runs Italy vampires and is Marsilia's ex.
"Epic Failure,"
"I'll have you know that I expect my archenemies to be competent."
Adam must fly to Europe to help Mercy although he believes her to be capable of saving herself. He doesn't fly alone. He brings with him Marsilia, Stefan, Honey, Elizaveta, Larry Sethaway (goblin), the pilot Austin Harris, and copilot Matt Smith. By the time, Adam and Co. lands, Mercy is now in Prague. Adam has to be diplomatic when all his wolf wants to do is to shred to pieces the vampires responsible for Mercy's abduction.
The best part about this installment is that we are given a dual POV by Adam and Mercy. It was nice shedding a light into Adam's struggles. He loves his wife and he would do anything for her. He was very protective of his pack and the people who traveled with him despite knowing they were strong enough to defend themselves. He trusted Mercy to be able to keep herself alive but he also was desperate to be with her.
"We have to hunt, find Mercy, and destroy the one who took her from us. And teach them that Mercy is ours."
There were so many things I love about Silence Fallen: Adam counting on Honey to behave like his second, learning more about the werewolf pack in Prague, Mercy learning more about her powers and understanding her father's manipulations, the new "submissive" Matt Smith, the need for Ben to swear even on email, Mercy's run in with the Golem. Let's just say, there was never a dull moment.
As a true lover of this series, I devoured this book. I laughed and sweated for most of it. There is a big twist which everyone will love. If anything, this book left me wanting for more. I did miss not having the rest of the pack and Mercy's friends. I hope the next one involves more of the old characters and less of the new.
Cliffhanger: No

4.5/5 Stars
Silence Fallen is a different Mercy book than what I've come to expect from this series. It's different in a good way and is reminiscent of the time when Mercy was an army of one. I wasn't a big fan of having Adam and Mercy separated again but it worked. What I did like is that most of this book occurs away from the Tri-Cities area and we get to see more of the world outside of Charles and Anna's eyes in the Alpha & Omega spin-off. Even though the story takes place in Europe, we still get to see many of our favorite characters.
One thing that made Adam and Mercy's separation more bearable is the fact that part of the story is told from Adam's point of view. We've seen a chapter from his perspective here and there in the series but in this book we got several and it was fascinating being in his head. His love for Mercy is absolutely adorable.
The story is told non-linearly and we're told in an author's note at the first to pay attention to Mercy's comments at the first of each chapter. I liked not being sure of how things were lining up since it conveyed Mercy’s confusion a lot better while still giving us a chance to see what Adam was up to. But I also feel like the timeline wasn't complex enough to warrant such a note. I read the comments thinking they'd be more important than they were. I don't think I would have expected as much out of them if it hadn't been for the note.
Like the previous books in the series, the pacing is fast and Mercy gets into trouble and chaos ensues. I will say that I did not see the twist in this book coming and oh! what a twist it was! Bravo, Mrs. Briggs! Bravo!
Silence Fallen is a great addition to a wonderful series and I can't wait to see what happens next. The next book is going to be a Charles and Anna book and I am so here for that!
Mercy is caught up in a vampire political power play that leaves her running for her life on an entirely different continent. Denied her biggest advantage, her friends and family, Mercy relies on her wits to traverse the vampires and the werewolves of Prague.
Sometimes the lesser of two evils isn’t always that best choice and some old ghosts are better left alone.
This installment, Silence Fallen of Mercy Thompson inspired a re-read of the entire series.
I know I am totally jumping the gun, but I couldn't wait to read more of Mercy and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. With each book, Briggs drags us deeper into the heart of Mercy's world and there is no slowing down for this series. Silence Fallen brings me back to the beginning when Mercy was facing everything mostly on her own. Just like then she is left stand by herself, but now we see the obvious character development and it is amazing. Mercy seeks alliances as soon as she gets the opportunity, and these alliances open an entire world that I would love to get to know even more...the European werewolves. Maybe another spin off. One can only hope.
I received this ARC copy of Silence Fallen from Berkley Publishing Group - ACE in exchange for a honest and voluntary review. This book is set for publication March 7, 2017.

Favorite Quote: “…my real superpower is chaos.”
A simple run to the corner market store turns into a battle for survival when Mercy is kidnapped and transported halfway around the world. Using her wits and skills, Mercy escapes her captor but finds herself alone in Europe with no money, no clothing, and no friends. Discovering her bond with Adam and the pack is weak and unreliable, Mercy heads towards possible allies while avoiding recapture as she slowly starts to suspect that her getting kidnapped and ending up in Prague is not a coincidence.
Ancient beings are rising, new powers are manifesting, old grudges are reborn… and one lone coyote is all that stands between an all-out supernatural war.
Patricia Briggs takes readers on an interesting, danger filled, and darkly humorous adventure in her tenth installment when Mercy is kidnapped by an overly curious vampire who is under the impression she is the most powerful person in the Tri-Cities area. Mercy soon finds herself getting into all sorts of trouble as she waits for Adam to find her.
“Who told you I was the most dangerous person in the Tri-Cities? There are goblins who could take me without breaking a sweat.”
Slow burn in terms of action and suspense but high on intrigue, Briggs keeps the storyline moving at a steady pace with engaging narrative, wit-infused dialogue and the ever present romantic undertones. Using the events from book nine to open the door, Briggs adds to her already convoluted world, introducing more new faces and revisiting some old one while divulging deeper into the backgrounds of some of the more colorful characters who inhabit this world.
“Yes, yes, we are all beautiful here. Can we get going? Or do I need to get the makeup mirror out of my purse so you two can admire yourselves a little longer?”
DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVEN’T READ FIRE TOUCHED!!
Silence Fallen opens not too long after Fire Touched ended. Mercy, Adam, and the pack are happy and content. Aiden seems to be adapting well to his new living arrangements, Mercy has realized Bran’s decision to separate himself from their pack wasn’t a rejection of her, and the supernatural community has been relatively quiet despite Mercy claiming the city to be under her pack’s protection. Hearing that Mercy was going to be ripped from the pack again gave me some pause because this actually seems to happen quite a bit. But fear not as Briggs is an old pro and knows how to bring her game to any situation or setting. Using a quirky but feasible off linear timeline, Mercy and Adam tell the story in alternating chapters with clues offered up quote style at the beginning of each chapter. You must pay close attention to these quotes as they are the lanterns used to light your way.
There is not much pack interaction in here but I felt their absence added to the anticipation of the story especially with the heavy inclusion of vampire politics and espionage. We aren’t sure what Mercy or Adam will do but using their dual voices adds strength to the narrative as both are required to do things they normally wouldn’t. Adam is forced to play the diplomat with a much more powerful predator (something he is definitely not used to) and Mercy must face some old fears and acknowledge that she is much more than a “simple mechanic.” Watching Mercy keep it together while Adam and his wolf struggle with the limitations imposed by politics is amusing to watch play out. It serves to remind us that even without the pack’s strength at their backs, they are more than able to handle their own and luckily they have some allies who step up to help them. Regardless of how they personally feel about Mercy.
“Somehow, when she is destroying other people’s carefully laid plans, she is not so annoying.”
Meeting the European supernatural community makes for some interesting scenes and lets us know there is a huge world beyond what we have seen so far. Their old world charm balances nicely with the offhand violence and I enjoyed the inclusion of Eastern European history through Mercy’s eyes. Jacob, Libor, Kocourek…I hope we haven’t seen the last of them.
“Such a clever coyote is your Mercy.”
The ending brings us the high-speed action and machiavellian twists we are used to seeing in this series. Briggs yet again proves she is a master of deception and nothing is ever quite what it seems. Silence Fallen takes us out of the usual and brings fresh faces, places, and storylines to the series. I for one am ready to see where Briggs takes us from here. Dare we hope for a strong crossover into the next Alpha Omega installment? *crossing fingers and toes*
GRADE: B
Mercy Thompson, one of my favorite paranormal/fantasy heroines of all time, gets herself kidnapped and almost killed. Waking up in Italy, a captive to a renaissance era vampire lord isn’t how Mercy had planned to visit Europe. Not being able to feel her bond with her mate Adam, and the Columbia Basin werewolf pack almost put her in a tailspin, but it doesn’t stop her from planning her escape and successfully fleeing her captivity. Of course not everything goes smoothly, and being related to Coyote, the king of chaos, you know Mercy isn’t going to be sitting quietly waiting for Adam to come pick her up. Somehow, Mercy jumps from the frying pan into the fire, and manages to break up a sinister vampire plot. Told from both Adam and Mercy’s perspective, you got a real feel for their bond and love for each other.
Silence Fallen’s plot was so intricately woven. Adam flies to Italy to “rescue” Mercy, but she’s not there anymore and he has to beat back his wolf in order to have a politically motivated meeting with the Vampire who almost killed his mate. You could practically hear the growl in Adams voice as he choked back his anger, fears and frustrations. In my opinion, we learned too much about the dynamics of a vampire seethe. Stefan and Marsilia’s past history in Europe was kind of interesting but I learned more than I probably needed though I’m sure that will come into play in future books.
Mercy always faces every challenge with a clear voice, but this time I heard a little bit of tiredness come through. Truly, if I were her, I would be saying, really? Again? Can’t I have some peace? Usually she just rolls with the punches. This time it seemed to take a little bit out of her. It makes me wonder what’s next for this character, and is the author also getting tired? I hope she has a lot left in her because I am not tired and could read Mercy’s story until she and I are in our 80’s! ❤❤❤❤
Silence Fallen is the Tenth installment in author Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. While out on a routine trip to the store, Mercy is kidnapped by a powerful vampire named Iacopo (Jacob) Bonarata, the Lord of the Night. Bloodied, hurt, and not understanding why she was taken, Mercy makes a plan. The first thing on Mercy's agenda is to find a way to escape. When Mercy does find a way to escape Jacob, his vampires, and pet werewolf Lenka she learns that she's in Italy.
Now, Mercy has to get as far away from Jacob and his minions as she can, and hope that Adam finds her quickly before Jacob can catch up to her. Mercy later finds herself in the city of Prague, where things become even more twisted, and she ends up meeting even more powerful characters from Libor, the Alpha of the Vltava Pack, to Mary, the witch turned vampire & mistress of her own twisted seethe. But, the most curious character is one straight out of Jewish folklore; the Golem of Prague.
Meanwhile, back home, Adam finds that his connection to Mercy has gone silent. He soon learns from Marsilia, who has a connection to Jacob, that Mercy has been taken to Italy. The reason for taking Mercy, and not Adam is pretty telling. If you've read this series, you know that Mercy has more than a fair share of powerful allies. Her actions in the previous installment came as a shock to the paranormal community. Jacob focused on Mercy because of what happened, in part, to being labeled as the most dangerous person in the Tri-Cities.
Adam puts together a team to go after and help get Mercy return home. The team includes vampires Marsilia & Stefan (who is still bonded with Mercy), witch Elizaveta, and werewolf Honey Jorgenson who hasn't always seen eye to eye with Mercy, but is slowly rising in the ranks of the Columbia Basin Pack. Briggs alternatives perspectives between Adam and Mercy's. But, there is a caveat, and you must pay attention to each chapter so that you know what point in the story the actual events are taking place.
I really should address Jacob. He is head of the Milan seethe, the most powerful vampire in all of Europe, and his power reaches world wide. Jacob's reasoning for taking Mercy is pretty sound considering her announcement in the prior installment. Can Mercy and her pack really back up her words, or is something even more twisted happening out of the sight of the public eye? I even liked that Marsilia while not a fan of Mercy's, understands that her actions were pretty damn powerful and have set a course where vampires, fae, and werewolves will have to work together to back up Mercy's proclamation.
I give the author a whole lot of credit for moving this series away from Mercy's home base. Like other authors who have done so before, it gives the series, and author more freedom to introduce more characters. There is always a question about why it has to be Mercy who is kidnapped all the time. After all, Mercy has seen her fair share of horrible situations, and one of those continues to haunt her even in this story. One could say it has to do with who is more important. Is it Mercy, or is it Adam? I am rather fond of Mercy and Bran and do hope things resettle themselves. After all, he's the only real father figure she's had in her life, and it would have been a complete sham for them to lose touch over politics and inconveniences.
