4.5 stars!
This is such a great read! An exciting and emotional new adult romance with the added bonus of being set in the world of extreme sports, on a cruise ship travelling the world. I was hooked from start to finish, and loved this gorgeous story.
Leah is about to have the experience of a lifetime – spending a year of college on board a cruse ship while travelling the world. She scored her scholarship by being chosen to be the tutor of Paxton Wilder, a 22 year old extreme sports star who is filming a documentary on board, and in their various stops, but he needs Leah to make sure he passes his classes otherwise the documentary gets canned.
It’s a fun set-up, made all the more awesome with these fantastic characters. Leah has survived a devastating trauma, and is determined to embrace this new opportunity. She is concentrating on her studies and seeing the world, and doesn’t have time for the games of an arrogant, playboy adrenaline junky.
“When are you going to understand that’s where life begins? Right at the edge of that fear.”
Paxton is one of the founding members of the Renegades, a team of extreme athlete who have achieved online fame and won multiple awards, and he is the spoiled, cocky adventure seeker that Leah thinks he is, but he’s more complex than that. Sure, his number one focus is his sport and getting his documentary made, but he has his reasons for doing so. He’s also not the playboy that Leah thinks he is, and with one glance at his spunky new teacher, he’s smitten.
And so, we get his fantastic adventure of ziplining, cliff-diving, parachuting and motor-cross riding through Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece and more. All the while, Paxton is introducing Leah to his world of excitement, pushing her to her limits, while proving that he really is a good guy and trying to win her heart. It’s a gorgeous journey with lots of flirting, banter, joking and excitement, and the love story builds beautifully and naturally into a sexy and intense romance that completely stole my heart.
“God, I loved her—and not a little kind of love. My heart was practically glowing. I probably looked like a warped glowworm or something.”
But in the meantime, the Renegades are facing a danger they hadn’t planned for, and secrets bring a devastating twist to Paxton and Leah’s relationship. it’s heartpounding and heartwrenching, and I was hooked as it all played out.
“The hardest battles - the most meaningful ones - they’re fought against ourselves. Against our own fears, our own weaknesses, our own shattered expectations of what we thought this life would be.”
There are so many elements of this book that were winners for me. I really enjoyed the exotic locations, and the excitement of the Renegades’ stunts. Of course, the romance captured my heart, and the individual journeys of Leah and Paxton are beautifully written, and I loved seeing them come together, open up to each other, and find peace, strength, comfort, and a soul-deep love.
“You don’t have to do extraordinary things to be extraordinary.”
This is such a great start to the series. I loved meeting the other Renegades, and can’t wait to explore more of their world. And after the ending of this book, I’m super excited for Landon/Nova’s book up next, and I’m diving right in.
Loved this one – 4.5 stars!
I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Christian Fox and Lauren Sweet, and they do a great job. I definitely recommend listening to this one!
Rebecca Yarros is one of the very few authors I have on my "buy everything they write" list. Her books have fabulous characters, heart wrenching storylines, and some of the best love stories I've read.
Wilder, the first book in The Renegades series, is an awesome book. I loved it from start to finish! There is so much to love, the setting (I would have been first to sign up for the Study at Sea program), the romance that is both sweet and hot with the forbidden love aspect, a storyline that has bit of mystery, a twist I didn't see coming and a happy ending.
This is the first book in The Renegades series by Rebecca Yarros. You are going to fall in love with these bad boys, the renegades. Rebecca Yarros will have you fanning yourself with this story, so hang on.
Leah has been offered the chance of a lifetime. She has been asked to go on a cruise that offers a University on board. Not only is this a great opportunity, but she is offered it as a free ride if she will tutor one of the fellow students. Leah and her friend know that they would be crazy not to take this opportunity, so they decide to go for it. Everything is good for the girls, except Leah's friend gets sick and can't go, will Leah still go?
Leah does decide to go ahead and go on the cruise. She never imagined she would meet someone that could sweep her off her feet, but guess what? She does and that guy is WIlder. WIlder is the person Leah was teamed up with to tutor. These two are far from the same make-up with Wilder being a crazy, try anything type of person and Leah being more of a reserved, quiet person.
Leah has had a rough time and has overcome some huge obstacles in her past. Although Leah still has some issues that she deals with, she is such a strong person to be able to do all that she does still. Wilder is able to help Leah deal with some of these issues when she finally opens up and trusts him. THe relationship between these two just continues to blossom as we learn more and more about them and I fell more and more in love with them as we do.
This is such a great read. You will not regret picking this one up for sure. Rebecca Yarros will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end and fanning yourself with Wilder's hotness. Great job Yarros!
Okay the next time I put off reading a Rebecca Yarros book you all have permission to slap me upside the head. This book was everything I was hoping it would be and so much more. Once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. I was instantly captivated by this world that she created and I can't wait to read more. I LOVED everything about this book, the characters, the stunts, the swoony romance, I just couldn't get enough.
Guys Wilder is the stuff that makes a book boyfriend. He was so sweet and sexy and SO. DAMN. SWOONY! Seriously. The chemistry between him and Leah was off the charts and I LOVED the way he was with her.
Seriously, if you haven't read this book yet GET A COPY NOW because it's good. So freaking good and I wants more and I want it now!

Rebecca Yarros kicks off her new series The Renegades with Wilder. I loved the setting and set up we get in this new series. X Games athletes, college on a cruise ship, exotic locales, and daredevil stunts. Add in the hot, sexy, tattooed Paxton Wilder, his tutor Leah Baxter, and the instant attraction, all things to have you turning the pages. A couple of unexpected twists kept me hooked and unable to put down the book until I finished the last page.
Time and again Yarros successfully delivers a cast of characters that will have you wanting and needing to read the next book in the series. This continues with The Renegades. I'm anxiously awaiting Nova's story.
When it comes to New Adult, Rebecca Yarros is at the top of her class. Her new Renegade Seriespurestdelightaward is starting off with some wild and insane stunts, people and places. It’s written with a touch of class, a touch of sass, a little bit of mystery and a whole lot of love.
Leah and Paxton are extreme opposites. She’s afraid of heights. He can’t get enough of extreme sports and stunts. The higher and more extreme the better. From Zip Lining to Sky Diving … from High Dives to Parasailing, Pax will push the extremes until there is nothing left. But, when things start to happen, when Leah gets hurt, when stunts start to go wrong, Paxton stops and reevaluates his feelings, his reason for filming the movie, and has to figure out who and why someone would be sabotaging the stunts. There is more to him than meets the eyes and Leah sees right through him. But, if she knew the real reason why she was chosen as his tutor, why he was really doing the movie, would she understand or would she leave?
Leah knows there is so much more to Paxton than what the world and You Tube shows of him. She has a past that she refuses to relive. She has a best friend that she would do anything for, including going on this cruise, alone, until she can join her. She doesn’t expect her student to be Paxton, she doesn’t expect to be the center of his attention, she doesn’t expect him to be romantic, loving, kind or smart. She got a rude awakening with their meeting and with what he was keeping from her. But, as things start falling apart for him, as the triple-flip stunt on live TV gets closer, she can’t help but wonder who would really want to hurt him and why. A chance encounter and everything falls into place for her. But, will she be too late to stop him from getting killed or injured? Does she love him enough to forgive him for his deceit? Does she believe him when he says “I love you”?
Wilder was a wild ride. Paxton Wilder can Zip Line into my life whenever he wants to. The romance between Leah and Paxton was sweet and exciting. He totally surprised me with how romantic he could really be. Leah had her problems and was starting to get me disgusted but, when she puts her mind to something and commits to someone, she goes all-in. I was really impressed with her descriptions of the different locales in the story. Rebecca Yarros brought them all to life and had you feeling like you were right there with them. I was also impressed with her reenactments of the extreme stunts and how they were pulled off. I really enjoyed Wilder and am looking forward to the upcoming books in the series. Rachel and Landon’s story should be really interesting.
Wow this was fast paced, adventurous, captivating and extreme. It's the first in the new series and I'm more eager for the rest in the series!
The reason I give it 4 stars is because it was too long in my opinion and there were moments I find myself feeling a bit bored .
