Love Suzanne Enoch, love a Highland Romance. They never fail to entertain. So this book was a little less than the conventional Regency/Highland Romance but it made it all the more enjoyable.
This was a decent story and I somewhat enjoyed both the hero and the heroine. However, nothing really stood out making it a great book.
So, I downloaded this ARC a while back, but life and kids took precident over reading. However, a seasonal cold ran rampant recently and I snagged the opportunity to catch up on my reading while the kids snoozed off their cold medicine.
Alright, so this story starts off slow as molasses, but picks up about halfway through. The charcaters are very dull, but do have some growth, and the encounter at the picnic had me smiling to myself.
All in all, could this have been better? Yes. Was it the worst thing I've ever read? No. It was more like the author was forced to write something and this was the best she could do, rather than her being passionate about the book.
Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch is a fabulous historical romance read. The way the hero and heroine are set up to disagree on everything makes for delightful reading, unexpected twists and turns and a complex story. Really enjoyed this read.
*I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
I really enjoyed this book.
Gabriel is a soldier. He is fighting against the French in Spain when he receives notice that he has inherited a dukedom from an uncle he was not even aware of. Along with the title, he has inherited two English estates and one very large Scottish estate. The steward of the Scottish estate has refused to cooperate with Gabriel's attorney's and he has decided to check out the estate himself and replace the steward.
Gabriel first meets Fiona when he rescues her (and a cow) from a mud hole. Fiona doesn't want to be rescued and is far from grateful to Gabriel, in fact when he asks for directions to the castle, she sends him towards the bog.
Fiona is the steward for the castle, she inherited the position when her brother went missing. She has worked hard for the last 4 years caring for the castle and the clan members, but a series of accidents have left the clan floundering.
Imagine Fiona's surprise when she finds out that the soldier she misdirected is actually the new duke! And imagine Gabriel's surprise at learning the lass that sent him to his potential doom is actually the steward he has come to see.
At first Fiona does all she can to send Gabriel on his way - some of the tactics are laugh out loud funny. But eventually she begins to see what a good man Gabriel is and starts to work with him to get to the bottom of the troubles plaguing the castle.
The story has is it all; light, funny moments, HOT love scenes, betrayal, a bit of a mystery, characters learning to change and a very, very sweet soulmate type love.
I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to the next book with Gabriel's sister Marjorie.
Leave it to Suzanne Enoch to fill this story with intrigue, action, romance, mystery and a lot of humor.
I loved the setting and characterization the best, but it’s “a heated battle of wills” that made this book so much fun to read.
If you’re missing #Outlander than grab this one and make the #Droughtlander shorter by day!

I loved Fiona and Gabriel's story!! Anytime there is a historical with one of the pair being Scottish and the other English, there is always a conflict to be resolved. Add to that, the fact that the hero is unwanted by almost everyone in the castle. Lots of drama ensues!!
I'm excited to read the next book in the series, which stars Gabriel's sister Marjorie !
I am an unconditional fan of Suzanne Enoch and I usually "devour" her stories eagerly. So it was a surprise that I felt zero connection to this heroine.
Usually plots involving Scots and Englishmen, the man is Scottish and has genuine aversion to any Englishwoman. Here is the opposite.
Gabriel Forrester was a very good soldier. When he found himself inheriting the title of Duke of Lattimer, he didn't like the idea. He was good fighting.
When faced with what the future awaited him, he felt the weight of his responsibility, but he would never escape a fight, especially if it involved a captivating woman like Fiona.
Fiona hated everything that was English, but she would have to answer to Gabriel. He, in turn, wanted to have her in his bed.
The fight of wishes was great between them, and one of them would have to yield first.
While I felt empathy for Gabriel, some actions of Fiona made me dislike her, although the end brings what is expected.
3,5 stars
As always a thank you goes to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing us with a copy of these books so that we could bring you this review.
It was nice to see a couple of characters that grew up struggling end up having it all. Gabriel wasn't expecting anything, but then something fell in his hands. This changes not only his life but his sisters. So it was nice to see both of them finding the love that they both need, want and deserve. Gabriel gets feisty Fiona while Marjorie gets Graeme who is so loving, caring and protective. There is something happening in those highlands and I can't wait to find out more.
Suzanne Enoch is taking us on another journey through historic Scotland with the story of an English soldier who suddenly finds himself with too many responsibilities and the life-changing events that he never knew to look forward to. Enoch has an interesting skill with bringing together the most unexpected of allies and forming relationships from them. I enjoyed this new first-in-a-series and am seriously looking forward to the next one where Gabriel's younger sister finds herself in an unexpected situation herself. Gabriel has lived a simple life, but he has made a name for himself in the British army and wants nothing more than to continue fighting with his men. When his estranged great-uncle dies with no heirs he is forced into the position of taking his place as the Duke of Lattimer, a truly unwanted position. Determined to fulfill his mission to get his affairs in order and get back to the war, he has traveled to the seat of his Dukedom in the Scottish Highlands to bring his estate up to date. Arriving to find his world will never be the same, Gabriel finds himself confronted with the brave and foolish young woman who has taken over the running of his estate. Fiona is a woman that will never submit to any man, but when Gabriel arrives and tries to push her not just out of her position but potentially out of her home, she knows she will need to get him to understand how important she is to his people. Gabriel is a bit of an arrogant ass, but he has never met a woman like Fiona and has no idea how to handle her. He thankfully learns to handle her as she steals more and more of his heart, and as the people that call his estate home come to trust him he is pulled deeper into the role he has never wanted from the time it fell into his lap. Fiona is beyond fiery and she has been the sole caretaker of her little piece of her clan for many years now; being faced with the danger Gabriel poses, to her people and her own heart, Fiona fights back like any cornered animal, but with her brain not just with physical force. I loved seeing these two clashing again and again, their wills both being beyond strong and their hardheadedness made them both the perfect match to one another. Fiona and Gabriel also came to represent the most important type of partnership, two dynamic leaders coming together to force a new clan with the people that support and love them most. As always I enjoyed the highland spirit expressed through these characters, even the ones that claimed their English heritage, because that highland spirit is sometimes the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. I cannot wait for the next in this series where we will get to learn more about Gabriel’s sister Marjorie and hopefully see her find her place in the highland culture that her brother now claims as his own. Another amazing series capturing the greatness of Scotland and the people that make it a most proud and unique culture that I can claim as my very own.
Major Gabriel Forrester and Fiona Blackstock are the featured couple in this delightful historical romance by Enoch. Gabriel inherits a title and lands that this soldier never wanted, but he does his duty and goes to view his lands in Scotland. There he meets Fiona Blackstock, who despises this new Duke of Lattimer and everything he stands for.
Gabriel is attracted to Fiona, so the story that follows is very interesting and intriguing. These two are fun and entertaining together. I thought it was a great way to start a series.
I loved the banter between Fiona and Gabriel. Two stubborn people brought together to save a property and legacy. Gabriel is surprised to learn he has inherited a title and properties. One of the properties led him to Fiona who wants nothing to do with him and is determined to protect the property she manages. 'There's danger, mystery and intrigue. Recommended Read
Major Gabriel Forrester loved battle. Gabriel was suppose to be on the hill this morning watching with Wellington and his commanders. But Gabriel had not answered general wellington and forged into battle. Then Gabriel is called to general wellington and told he needs to go as he is now the Duke of Lattimer. Gabriel is now on his estates with his aide - de-camp who has been in Gabriel’s company for eight years and he practically knows Gabriel’s thoughts. Gabriel had inherited his lands and title from a distant uncle. Fiona is the Lattimer's Stewart and has been since her brother disappeared. Fiona's main focus is seeing that her people are looked after. Fiona's cause was making her job a little difficult.Fiona knows Gabriel doesn’t plan on staying. Fiona is attracted to Gabriel and Gabriel is fascinated with her and determined to have her in his bed. Fiona is no virgin and has had lovers even the Gatekeeper of the estate. But someone seems to be stealing the sheep from the estate. Fiona wants Gabriel to leave his own estate for she hates all things English and Gabriel is English.
I didn't care for this story. First I would have liked more background on gabriel. I didn’t like or really connect with Fiona as I felt she was bratty and immature and it was Gabriel’s estate not hers whether he was English or not and she had no right to want him to leave who did she think she was? She wasn’t doing that good of a job if sheep were being stolen at least as far as I am concerned. This definitely didn’t WOW me in any way. I also didn’t feel the chemistry between Gabriel and Fiona. I don’t even know why Gabriel was even attracted to her and really she was a floozie as far as I am concerned. Also there was too much going on.
Fiona, the heroine of the novel, is at her wits end trying to keep Castle Maxwell and its estates running smoothly. The last thing she needs is an English duke coming to take over. Fiona and Gabriel strike sparks immediately, though it takes a while for those sparks to change to romance. This combustible pair have to work together to put the estate and the clan back together. There's plenty of steam, but also great emotional arcs.
I enjoyed this book - it paints beautiful pictures of the highlands and tells a new story
Some Like it Scot I the only other book by Suzanne Enoch that I have read before this one. Since both books were very enjoyable reads., I plan to remedy that soon. The story takes place during the time period of the Peninsular wars. Major Gabriel Forrester is a breakneck commander who does not expect his men to do anything he would not do himself. He suddenly finds himself the heir to a dukedom. Avman who has only known soldering without a home to call his own, he has inherited not just one estate but three. Two of the three are prosperous, but the Scottish property, not so much. Since the steward of Lattimer Castle has basically told the solicitors to bug off, Gabriel decides to investigate for himself. His first meeting with Fiona Blackstock is less than pleasant. At the castle he finds she is his steward and not her brother as expected. What follows is a bit of a love- hate relationship until they get to know and appreciate each other. Although Gabriel planned to return to what he knows-war, he finds he can not desert those who depend on him. The estate has seen a lot of bad luck over the past several years from missing sheep to cracked millstones. Are they merely coincidental accidents or is it sabotage? Who (and there are many) wants Lattimer to fail? This is a storyline told with humor, mystery and intrigue, good character development, several villains and of course romance. The book also contains an excerpt of the next book featuring Gabriel's sister, sounds very interesting.
