I’ve not read the other books in this series but I had seen that this book was not a film and I wanted a nice short Christmas book before the end of the year.
Noelle has been spending her life avoiding adventures for so long she can’t remember what it’s like to have one! I really liked Noelle. She seems like a bit of an introvert that wants to get out there a bit more but doesn’t know how.
The idea of being locked in a department store sounds like so much fun! Like Noelle, I’d definitely be trying on all the clothes and shoes! I’ve not been shopping in so long and I do miss a day mooching around.
This book too a new twist on A Christmas carol with the shoe’s triggering memories. I really liked this. It was a good way for Beth to make it her own.
This is a cute festive story that you can easily read in an afternoon.
DNF. I couldn't connect with this book at all and found it really hard to get into. I had high hopes for this, which is a shame.
After watching the Christmas made for tv movie based on this book, I felt like I finally needed to pick it up. I actually liked the book better than the movie, although it was sweet in its own right. Cute and funny, nothing ground breaking but it was entertaining.
A short and cute story about a girl gets the spirit of Christmas in a most interesting and unusual way. Noelle isn’t a Scrooge type person, but she isn’t a Buddy the Elf either. On Christmas Eve, she works late, oblivious to the time, and ends up getting locked in. The idea of camping out in an upscale department store sounds like an awesome idea until she runs across an elderly woman in the shoe department who claims to be Noelle’s guardian angel. So, we begin a journey into Noelle’s life to see how she has checked out of life by just existing instead of living. With the help of the gorgeous designer shoes, Noelle relives numerous memories of her life and the missed opportunities.
I enjoyed this story and was a little envious of Noelle. Getting stuck in this beautiful department store and being given access to anything she wants sounds like a dream come true, even with her boss showing up at the end of the story practically ordering her to go on vacation to Rome and feel free to take whatever you want from the store. Sign me up! Call me crazy, but if one of my friends offers me an all-expense paid trip to Rome, I am not going to balk at the chance. Noelle isn’t like that. She avoids opportunities or challenges to bring excitement, love, joy, or whatever to her life. It may take an act of God and her guardian angel to give Noelle the push she needs.
My Final Verdict: I recommend this story to readers looking for something short and sweet for their holiday reading pile that will satisfy their craving without adding calories.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a sweet and touching story about a woman who is settled into her life of being alone and discovers that it's never too late to make a change in order to set your life on a new path.
Noelle hates the holidays, is devoted to her job and not much else. As she gets snowed into the department store where she works, a visit from her guardian angel helps her to revisit her past and see how different things could have been. Will this insight cause her to make a change and see what life could offer?
I read this in one sitting, it was an enjoyable read that reinforced the idea that you're never really alone, there is always someone out there looking out for you.
A cute little story with a very "Christmas Carol" vibe to it.... but I didn't get into the story over much. I didn't get the purpose of Lex knowing Charlie or Jake showing up at the end the way he did..I don't know, the story was great, it just didn't do it for me.
A Shoe Addict's Christmas by Beth Harbison is a modern, fun, & unique re-telling of the Christmas Carol. I enjoyed this book from start to finish & look forward to reading more by the author.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I tried a couple times to get into this book and finish, but I just couldn't. I do enjoy a good Beth Harbison book. This one just wasn't for me.
This is a very cute holiday short story about Noelle, who doesn't enjoy the holidays. She is also down on love at the moment. She stays late at her job at a department store on Christmas Eve and is inadvertently locked inside. She is visited by a woman who tells Noelle she is her guardian angel, and then the Ghosts of Christmas pasts, present, and future appear.
I enjoyed this very short and quick to read novella.
Great light fun Christmas read. A modern, shoe-filled retelling of A Christmas Carol.
Review: I really enjoyed this festive novella. I mean anyone who knows me would know that it would be my absolute dream to be stuck on my own in a department store around Christmas time and so the whole idea behind this storyline is very me indeed! I loved the description of the store itself and of the way it made Noelle feel with and without people in it. I could really picture myself there and picture the way that Noelle was handling the whole thing.
I thought the kind of ghosts of Christmas aspect of the story was interesting as well. Each memory is triggered by a certain pair of shoes, which is very appropriate considering the fact that this is part of the shoe addicts series, but it really felt like a new take on this old idea and I very much enjoyed that side of things.
As for the characters, i could definitely relate to Noelle. I think that she was very easy to like, but also very easy to identify with. Who couldn't imagine themselves working so hard that they don't even notice that their workplace has been locked up around them? I for one, was glad that someone came and kicked me out every night before they locked the school up! I liked that Noelle had faults as well, no one likes a goody two shoes after all. I loved her so much that I really hope I get to read more about her in the future!
The fairy godmother character, the person guiding Noelle through her festive memories was suitably eccentric. I loved that she knew that she was dead but didn't have many other memories from her 'living' life. I also liked the way that she interacted with Noelle, it felt very appropriate.
This novella definitely could have been stretched into a full length novel with a bit more build up at the beginning and more appearances from some of the supporting characters. I also would have loved to have heard more about what happened to Noelle after that night, but it was the perfect reading length to fit in around the festive period. I read this is one sitting and would definitely recommend getting this to add t your festive TBR or to read at any time of year for that matter!
I admit when I signed up to review this book, I was clueless that it was a part of a series, but after doing some research, I found that I could read it on its own before I read the previous two books in the series. But I will say that after reading it, I am definitely excited to read the first two in the series!
Now to review. After I read this book, I saw someone say that it was a take on A Christmas Carol by visiting the character's past to learn a lesson and I agree, but I would say it was the best lady edition of A Christmas Carol! I loved how they stayed in her past and visited many moments where if she had made a different turn, her life could have gone in a different direction.
I have to admit I also loved that this book was set in a neighborhood not to far from where I live. I loved reading a book where I knew where she was and could picture it all in my head.
At just 160 pages this book was perfect for a day that was full of holiday shopping and gift wrapping. I loved ending my day with this fun holiday read.
