Thank you Netgalley for this copy for an honest review
Cozy and pleasant read, full of that unique goodness of people I have been able to encounter only in the literature from the UK. The novel is populated with the everyday yet special people you want to have in your life, with all their mistakes, good deeds, normalcy and strangeness, because they feel like the salt of the earth.
Yet - they do not know how to communicate with each other. That´s why I went for the 3 stars - all the cozy magic could not stop me from thinking ´If only they really speak to each other! Many things could be prevented.’
But yes, now I need to have a Scottish pearl. White with a pink tint - or maybe amber one?
Brodie McBride is the last pearl fisher in Scotland. He's been secretly collecting pearls for nineteen years to complete a necklace for his wife, Elspeth. He just needs one more pearl but the riverbeds have been over fished and all his usual sites are coming up empty. When is young daughter Maggie finds out about this important mission, she decides to help. But her plan backfires and the consequences are far reaching.
This was a very well written book that had a fascinating storyline. I didn't know about pearl fishing in the UK and didn't know it had been banned since 1998. For me that was more engaging than the characters. I did invest in their lives but not as much as I did in the plight of the mussels. Interesting because if there was someone's life to save versus a mussel I would tread on the mussel without a second thought to save the person! That being said, if the author releases another book, I would definitely read it.
With an intriguing title like that, how could I not read this? I live in Scotland and had no idea there had ever been pearl fishers! It's a story about Brodie McBride, who spends his days fishing for pearls, as did his father before him. In turn, he teaches his daughter. Brodie's wife sells the pearls he finds, but doesn't know that he is searching for a special pearl just for her. This is the tale of how his daughter becomes involved in his quest, and the consequences of her actions. I enjoyed it, and found it quite well written although I must say the characters came across as a little flat at times.
