This is second in a series featuring Tess Grey, an ex-cop, now a Private Investigator. Her partner is Nicolas Villere, better known as 'Po'. These two are like the odd couple. Tess has always wanted to be in law enforcement, but an on-the-job injury obliged her to leave the force. Po is an ex-con. He served several years for murder. He has served his time and now is on the right side of the law. Tess and Po are also partners outside of their work.
They have been hired by a woman to find her grand-daughter, Jasmine Reed, who's been missing for two weeks. She's walked away before but always come back. So, except for Tess, no one seems to be overly concerned about her disappearance.
Tess and Po aren't the only ones looking for Jasmine. Who are these others and why are they also looking for her? What is in Jasmine's past that would attract this kind of attention?
As their investigation continues, Tess finds a link to several women, who have also disappeared. What's the common thread .... and who would want these women? And how many of them are still alive?
I really enjoyed this book ... I loved the characters. I liked how Tess and Po interact. She's a strong woman who isn't afraid to ask for help when she needs it. Po is very protective of her and there's nothing he won't do for her. He has a bit of mysterious past that hopefully will be covered in the next book in this series.
My favorite bad guy so far this year is John Trojak. He's a murderer, but he's also gentle. He is a victim of domestic violence ... his wife is brutal to him, But he loves her and they've been together more than 20 years. He also has a thing about people who use bad language. He's more apt to cut out your tongue out for swearing as anything else.
All in all, a very engaging story, lots of action, and great characters. All my boxes have been checked.
