I didn't like this historical romance at all - it was way too modern in flavour. The writing was simple and just okay and needed polishing. Sorry, I wasn't invested enough in the story to finish it after the first few chapters. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC
Caroline certainly don't seem like a match made in heaven. Farthest from, actually! He's an entitled snob, she's an American making her way through the ton seeking a husband. Murders, mystery & a huge plot twist later see them together, at last.
I read this as a stand-alone, not having read Sharon Drane's other books, and it worked for me. I do think reading the previous title would have made it a bit more enjoyable.
If you haven't picked this up, take a chance and enjoy the adventure - you won't regret it!
This book was just ok for me. I didn’t like the character of William and I never really engaged with any of the other characters. The plot was good but I bogged down in some spots.
Many thanks to Salt Run Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I received this a long time ago from Netgalley and just now finished it. I had started it a long time ago but put it aside because I didn’t like William. So this is book three in the touch the sky series. We deal with William, Celestes’ brother. William was such a horrible jerk I honestly didn’t see any redeeming qualities about him. He was just not a nice person. The story was okay but too spread out in time for me. Just an okay read for me.
I am in two frames of mind about this, on the surface it seems like a great great which is why I chose to read it, but I have got to say that it's not for me. The story was OK, but I can guarantee others will love this.
This is more of a dramatic family saga rather than a traditional romance story. Will and Caroline are the main characters, but love and relationships are told of Lisette, Jayne, Drake, Will with someone other than Caroline and Caroline with someone other than Will. There are a lot of twists and surprises, suspense and drama. It's captivating and intense and amusing.
As for the characters. Will is a pompous snob. Caroline is American and doesn't care what the ton thinks of her, she's only in England to have an adventure. Will is constantly making digs at her. Lisette is a spoiled, naive young lady. Jayne is a sweet girl who was abused and Caroline rescues. And Drake is a nice guy who had his heart broken by his love's father and is pining for her. Some of the other characters are really great people, some are really bad people.
So all in all its a great book that should be on your TBR list.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
This is the story of Caroline, an American heiress who is in England looking for a husband, and who is disdained by the ton. I enjoyed the first part of the story. It moved at a nice pace and was very interesting. The second part of the story was set in Philadelphia. I felt that the story slowed down quite a bit in the beginning of the second part, but as it moved along it got better.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It had interesting characters, a good plot and was well written. It had some very good twists in the story that I loved, dealt with domestic abuse, had suspense and murder along with some romance. It was an enjoyable read. I will be looking at this author's other two books.
Caroline is an American heiress in England looking for a husband. The ton doesn’t like Caroline’s ways. The ton including William also made fun of Caroline. Caroline doesn’t really care except for Baron Hardreaves - William. She cares what he thinks of her and how she appears,to him. Caroline knows when a woman is being abused and Jayne is so Caroline takes Jayne out of the household of a lord who was abusing Jayne. Then William’s niece decides to marry the same abusive lord and she won’t listen to Caroline. Caroline would never admit she enjoys the skirmishes with William but she will never allow herself to love William. Caroline’s calling was acting and when she took a role she was ridiculed for taking the role and the ton did not accept that acting was an acceptable career path for a lady. Caroline defended herself as well as other women she helped.
I had mixed feelings for this stories. I didn’t care for William at all he was snotty and he moved with a gossipy shallow society. Also William made a lot major nasty insult to Caroline. But I did like that it showed some of the couples married for love and it showed in this story. I would have liked to have this story show why William was such a stickler for high society. But the story has : hope, mystery, murders, villains, romance, death, greed, kidnapping, scandal and so much more. There were many ups and downs,. The characters thoughts were in italics felt it happened to often and made the story confusing. This was a bit far fetched also. But I did like the plot and I really liked Caroline’s character- her independence and strength. So as you can see some things I liked and some I didn’t.
Although this is the third book in this series, it is the first by Sharon Drane that I have read. The book is a stand alone, but reading the other books would have been helpful to learn the characters history. The underlying story of abuse to women is a very worthy topic. Abuse is not just a modern issue, but has been around almost since time began. In much of our history, in most cultures, women were considered property of their husbands, even their inheritance became their husbands property. I can not fault this part of the storyline. However, though the basic story was good, it took too long to tell. There was copious amounts of dialogue, not sure if all was necessary. Often the characters thoughts were added to the dialogue (in italics), which I found a little confusing and too frequent. When I read a book I want to fall in love with the characters, or at least like them. William and Caroline should have been characters to fall in love with, they had all the components to start but faltered along the way. William more so than Caroline. In the beginning, he was stodgy enjoyed baiting and ridiculing her. As he came to know her, his opinion was changing. I guess there was one scandal too many for him to handle and he reverts to his stodginess. The changes in his attitude were too quick for me to accept. However, it was necessary or the story would have been rather short and the part two setting in Philadelphia would not have happened. Although the characters were not my favorites, the book was a fairly enjoyable read. I would read another book by this author, maybe I will catch up on the first two in the series.
