“Eye of the Storm” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by Frank Cavallo (https://www.frankcavallo.com). Mr. Cavallo has published four novels.

I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and Mature Language. The story is set in contemporary times, but in a distant world. The primary characters are Dr. Anna Fayne and former SEAL Eric Slade.

Evidence of strange circumstances surrounding the crash of an aircraft in a remote area sparks the drive to send an expedition to investigate. Fayne leads the scientific side of the mission, while Slade is there in his new career as the host of a popular reality TV program that pursues the paranormal and strange in the world.

They get plenty of strange as they soon find themselves transported to another time and place. A much more primitive world than our own. Fayne and Slade are soon separated. Slade finds himself a slave to a powerful kingdom of what would be considered by us to be Neanderthals. Fayne is sent away for her safety and finds herself with the man who is the primary enemy of the Neanderthals.

There are many more details, but little more can be said without spoilers. I thought that the nearly 9 hours reading this 402 page novel were interesting. While the story seems like fantasy, it is clearly Science Fiction once you get well into it. I liked the Fayne character, but the Slade character seemed off in some way. The plot was interesting.

The story spanned 2-3 years of time. There seemed to be jumps in the story to accommodate the timeline. I think it would have been better to have made this into 2 or even 3 separate novels with more details to fill in the gaps. The cover art, while it ties to the story, is too dark and the image hard to distinguish. I give this novel a 3 out of 5.
