A Great Gift for Cat-Loving Men: A Fun and High-Quality Coffee Table Book
Looking for a fun and unique gift for a cat-loving man in your life? Consider this book, which is perfect for displaying on a coffee table or even as bathroom reading. The quality binding and print are impressive, and there's a surprising amount of content. I gave this book as a gift to my boyfriend, following a suggestion from my cat, and we were both pleasantly surprised by its quality and appearance. Don't be fooled by its "cute" exterior – this book is well-done and not at all cheesy or corny.

I learned quite a bit that I didn't know about cats and the famous people they owned. Even where I did know something about them, I learned more of the story -- such as the fact that Churchill's estate Charwell always has a ginger cat. All this reading about cats has given me an urge to go read H.P. Lovecraft's story "The Cats of Ulthar"!

I really enjoyed this and it had a lot more to it than I expected. I definitely think this would make a great gift for someone with a little history love and a love of cats.

A really fun, fully colored book that looks at famous men in history who were also cat lovers. There are direct quotes from the men that speak directly to how much having a cat affected their lives in positive ways. Half of the quotes I won’t to get put onto a sign and hung in my house! I just loved it! Some of the famous people mentioned are Haruki Murakami, Nikola Tesla, David Bowie, Churchill, Sir Issac Newton, Mark Twain, and Marlon Brando. I would highly recommend this short little book to any and all cat lovers! I also loved the artwork in the book, again I want to print them out as posters and hang them all over my house!

Thank you Netgalley for providing me a copy in exchange for my honest review.

<em>Of Cats and Men</em> by Sam Kalda is a simple and charming book of brief biography/profiles of famous men of history and their association/appreciation/love of cats. The book is attractively illustrated with a painting for each profile.

The book is entertaining and informative, and for all men out there who loves cats, affirmation that we are not alone in our appreciation for the feline pets and in fact in the company of some pretty great personalities.

About halfway through the book I did note that this isn't always the sort of company I necessarily want to be associated with. Some of these men went a little over-board in their affections (Freddie Mercury anyone?). The artists and writers who lived (and died) somewhat controversially also don't necessarily reflect the best of we men who love cats. Ladies ... not all men who love cats are crazy!

This lightly spoofs the 'crazy cat lady' theory by showcasing thirty 'crazy cat guys' but does so very lovingly and with attractive, stylized art (see the cover for an example).

This would make a nice gift for the cat-lover you know, or for yourself.

This book features profiles of the following cat lovers:

King Hywel the Good
Sultan Baibars
Michel de Montaigne
Sir Isaac Newton
Samuel Johnson
Edward Lear
Mark Twain
Nikola Tesla
Maurice Ravel
Louis Wain
Sir Winston Churchill
T.S. Eliot
Paul Klee
Tsuguharu Foujita
Raymond Chandler
George Balanchine
Jean Cocteau
Ernest Hemingway
Balthus
Romare Bearden
William S. Burroughs
Saul Steinberg
Charles Bukowski
Marlon Brando
Edward Gorey
Andy Warhol
Karl Lagerfeld
Freddie Mercury
Haruki Murakami
Al Weiwei

I just can't turn away from a book that features cats, lol. And the pairing of cats with historical figures was appealing also. The book takes a semi-humorous, semi-serious look at the saying that dogs are man's best friend then goes on to explain why, in the author's opinion at least, cats deserve to be man's special friend too.

"Of Cats and Men" is a short book, only about 100 pages, with short biographies of men from around the world throughout history who either had cats in their lives or were important to cats in some way. The emphasis of the book is on the humans more than the cats. If you want to learn more about the cats in the lives of the men portrayed, you'll be disappointed as details are few at best. But if you are curious about which great historical men have been cat lovers, this is the book for you. The book contains illustrations of each of the men, sometimes with cat, sometimes sans cat, and there are also quotes about cats scattered throughout the book. Written with humor, and affection for cats, the book makes a good gift or coffee table book.
