I did not expect to enjoy this book quite as much as I did, but I found myself relating so much to the heroine and rooting for her from the very beginning. Now I know not to shy away from books about older heroines and also men are the worst.
Great idea for a book and really well executed. A thoroughly good read. Highly recommended. .
I chose the best book to start off 2019! I have had it for a while and I am sorry I didn’t pick it up sooner. I love Marcy Hammer! She is dealt a blow when her husband of 33 years tells her he has had an affair. (We also find out later into the book that there is a baby) She goes through all the emotions you would expect but on top of it all, her mother falls and is diagnosed with cancer. How much can one person take? Marcy handles it the way I think I would. She has that dose of humor that keeps her going. (I am friends with Marilyn on Facebook and I definitely see the Marcy/Marilyn connection in the funny category!)
You will be so entertained by this book. You will love Marcy like I do. You will love her friendships. You will love her relationships with her children. You will love Jon. You will love everything about this delightful gem. I look forward to diving into the next book.
And yes, I did get teary at the end. For a moment, I heard my mother too.
A very interesting tale that held my attention all the way through. Great plot, lotsa giggles & the writing kept me hopping! Thanks for the opportunity with this ARC!
"Lift and Separate" is about a woman who, in her fifties, must reinvent herself from housewife to an independent woman with a completely new lifestyle. Marcy Hammer is a woman who has been married to one man her whole adult life. After she learns that her husband has been "indiscreet," she eventually changes her thoughts and attitudes toward a host of new relationships.
I didn't find myself laughing as some reviewers have said. I looked at this book in more of an introspective coming of age story. A number of Marcy's situations hit home with me. For instance, I started crying when I read about her mother. I had lost my mother a couple years ago and the relationship between Marcy and her mom really hit home. I also loved the fact that she had to pick herself up, dust herself off and start all over again because at some point in all our lives that's exactly what we have to do.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the pleasure of reading and providing a review of this book.
There was nothing funny or endearing about this book. It didn't keep me engaged , and I found it repetitive and humourless. The plot line and characters needed more development. I stuck with it to the bitter end out of sheer stubbornness, but I really didn’t enjoy this one.
I really enjoyed this book! I loved how Marcy takes back her life and strikes out on her own. This is a book filled with humor. Marcy takes you along on her journey as her marriage dissolves an her children drop a few bombshells. She doesn't lose her resolve and keeps reaching for her dreams! This is an awesome book and I can't wait to share this with our customers her at the library!
AMAZING!! I loved this book. I wasn't sure about it, I thought Marcy would go back to her husband, which to be honest I probably would have done. You get comfortable and don't want to have to change. This book was funny, sad, maddening and just plain loveable. Ms. Rothstein has become my author to watch. Thank you so much for writing this book.
Marcy Hammer’s life has been turned upside down. Her husband, the head of a global brassiere empire, didn’t think twice about leaving her after thirty-three years of marriage for a 32DD lingerie model. Now Harvey the Home-Wrecker is missing in action, but Marcy’s through thinking about what a cliché he is. What she needs now is a party-size bag of potato chips, a good support system, and a new dress.
Striking out on her own is difficult at first, but Marcy manages to find traces of humor in her heartbreak. Even while devastated by Harvey’s departure, she still has her indomitable spirit and her self-respect. She has no intention of falling apart, either, even when her adult children drop a few bombshells of their own and she discovers a secret about her new, once-in-a-lifetime friend. Life may be full of setbacks, but by lifting herself up by her own lacy straps, Marcy just may be able to handle them all.
I rather enjoyed this book. Having gone through a divorce at 30, I felt the characters' pain, felt sympathy. I liked reading this, it was something I could connect with. I will say the ending wrapped up too quick and nice for me, but in all, it was more interesting than some of the "romances" I've read lately. It was realistic, you found it easy to not only connect with Marcy. You can feel for her, and what she's going through. It was messy, it was as close to real as you can get, while still wanting to turn every page! There was no boredom where I felt like putting the book down. The author took a serious, every day situation and made it witty, yet uplifting. This is a book I would certainly recommend book clubs take the time to read and discuss!
I loved this book! It was fun and fast paced.
Marcy is surprised that her husband moves out after 33 years of marriage after telling her of an affair he’d had with a fitting model at his lingerie factory. She was absolutely crushed and over a few weeks, when Harvey wanted to come back, she was actually considering it when he told her that the model was pregnant with his child.
That was enough for March and she began to start her own life. I loved how her friendship grew with Candy as they went through the tough spots in their lives. I love how she finally began to realize what she wanted instead of what anyone else wanted after so many years of doing for others.
This book was frantic in parts but laughing out loud funny in other parts. I highly recommend this book!
Depressing. Well written and kept me reading until the end but I just found it too sad to rate above a three.
I did not finish this book as I did not engage with the story or the characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an e-Arc of this title in exchange for an honest review. I realized that Lake Union rarely fails to give me a book I love, and this is no exception. this book is about a wife being left, for the typical younger woman, after 33years of marriage. The title comes from the family business of lingerie and undergarments. You see Marcy make the transition of disbelief, to anger, to hiding, to realizing she can rebuild her life, and it might even be a better version. This is a nice quick, humorous but touching book. I highly recommend it.
Marcy’s husband, Harvey – the owner of the Bountiful Bosom bra company – announces he is leaving her after 33 years of marriage for a much younger lingerie model. So Marcy, an empty-nester, has to strike out on her own – with the help of her tell-it-like-it-is friend Dana, who is on to her third marriage. This story delves into the trials Marcy faces as she contemplates life alone – finding paid work as well as dealing with her mother’s ill-health and her daughter’s own affair with a married man. This was more of a character-driven, rather than plot-driven, novel. Marcy has a wry sense of humour but perhaps it works best for American audiences. One for those looking for a more mature heroine.
Lift and Separate is a humorous novel about a woman named Marcy that finds out that her husband is trading in their 30+ year marriage for a well-endowed lingerie model. After this unfortunate information is presented to her, Marcy embarks on a journey of self-discovery; from trying to win Harvey back to the slow realization of what her future looks like based on the events that play out in her life throughout the story.
Filled with real-life themes of infidelity and moving on after loss, one of the most important messages is that although it's not easy to move on, it’s never too late to make a change and find true happiness. I can’t imagine ever being involved with someone that would cheat on me, but this novel gave an entertaining insight on what that must be like.
There's a determined shopping trip to Nordstrom (which as a former Nordstrom employee I found to be hilarious!), a daughter who is ironically seeing a married man, and a large dose of sadness due to a major loss in Marcy's life. Add all of these things together and you've got yourself an interesting story.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I love an author that write witty, sarcastic characters. Marcy is fun. Her life has been turned upside down thanks to her husband. Harvey has had an affair and on top of that she is now pregnant. Her interactions with her children and best friend Dana is witty and relatable. This is a fast, fun read. Great escape when you just want to have some lighthearted fun.
This is a great women's read ! For every women who made the stupid mistake of giving up her life for building a life around her husband's college, career, family and success then was dumped when they are successful this book is for you, its written for all of us ! I loved it
The author tells a heart felt story of a 59 year old, Marcy. , She has been a devoted wife helping build her husbands career, a wonderful Mother and the appropriate wife in every way. When she is 59 her husband dumps her for a younger model . This is a story for all women who have been dumped after a lifetime of devotion , told with humor and heartfelt understanding. This book ,resonates with all of us .
Marcy begins life anew with a great deal of heartache and humor. She has to reestablish herself in a world that ignores senior women and is difficult to traverse.. The humor here had me laughing out loud .
This is her story, of her reinvention and her success. . This is told from a fresh honest perspective . The writing is so well crafted I could not put the book down. I loved it from cover to cover. The author has her finger on the pulse of what life is like for a senior women starting over along in this cruel world. Bravo ! Well done. I love it and highly recommend this book for your reading enjoyment. Cross posted to Amazon for the author. I look forward to your next book.
Marcy is 50-something and about to get a fresh start in life, like it or not. After 30 years of marriage, her husband has just informed her that he’d like to put their relationship on hold–and, oh yeah, he had an affair with a 22-year old lingerie model. Marcy has devoted her life to being a wife and mother (to three now adult children), and the thought of not fulfilling the same role she always has is enough to send her over the edge. But with the help of her friends, her mother, her kids, a new job, and a sexy-pants colleague who she’s starting to see in a new light, she will have to find a way to forge ahead and make a new life for herself.
This book is predictable and fluffy but also genuinely amusing and fun. Marcy is a very likable character, and it’s easy to empathize with her–mostly because she’s a resourceful and strong woman with a good sense of humor…but also because author Marilyn Rothstein goes beyond out of her way to make Marcy’s husband, Harvey, a total scoundrel. Because of that, some moments border on unbelievable, but I was never so turned off that I wanted to stop reading.
My only minor complaint is that I wish Rothstein had allowed Marcy to more wholly embrace her visit with the divorce lawyer. Marcy only meets with the lawyer once (maybe twice?) in the book, and she’s hesitant and full of doubt the whole time. I’m a happily married woman, don’t get me wrong, but there’s nothing wrong with a person who knows how and when to cover her own ass. In Marcy’s situation, her husband does have a lawyer, is in complete control of the family finances, and has already admitted to cheating! I think that’s exactly the point when you need to know your options so you can make an informed decision about your future, no guilt necessary.
Regardless, this book entertained me. It had just enough depth and detail to keep me hooked but was never so serious that I felt overwhelmed or worried. It’s the perfect fluff read.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me a sneak peak of this book!
Books about women putting their lives back together after their husbands walk out to have a mid-life crisis affair have never been in my wheelhouse, so I did not have high hopes for this novel. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Rothstein creates complex characters, showing how important it is to surround yourself with family and friends who truly have your back and understand you. The biggest complaint I have with this novel is that a few of the characters seem to focus on one problem in their own lives and just constantly repeat the same complaint over and over, but the way they're worked into the overall plot keeps it from becoming too obnoxious.
