A Christmas Day at the Office was an enjoyable read following the same set of characters as A Day at the Office ten months later on the day of their office Christmas party.
For the employees of Seek Software, the Christmas party being thrown by their new boss is a source of unease. No one knows if their jobs are safe or what the their new boss has planned for the merger. For Sophia, she’s hoping to use the night to snag her new billionaire boss. Calum is planning to propose to Mia Rose and he’s not sure what he’ll do if she says no. Nathan, unsure if his job is safe, doesn’t know how to react when the ex who broke his heart shows back up. Julie is left reeling by some unexpected news and has no idea how to break the news to Mark. Mark is offered an amazing opportunity but may be forced to make a choice between it and Julie.
This book is written from the points of view of five employees at Seek Software and takes place entirely in one day. We rotate through the five fairly quickly with a lot of overlapping scenes occurring, i.e. one of the main five will pop up in the background of another character’s section. The story followed a logical path through the day’s events with very little backtracking despite the number of points of view which was something I appreciated. Each character has a very distinct voice, so I had no trouble telling everyone apart and could easily follow along.
I ended up having some of the same issues with this book as I did the first in the series. I didn’t like a few of the main characters and as we don’t see many characters outside of the main five, that made it a bit of a struggle when I was following a character I disliked. Also as I’m not from London, there is quite a bit of slang used that I didn’t understand which would pull me out of the story. This book ends a bit more open-ended than I typically like and I found myself wishing a few of the threads had been tied off better when the story ended.
A Christmas Day at the Office was a quick, easy read that just isn’t my type of humor which lessened my enjoyment a bit. I would recommend this book to those who like slice of life type stories.
This book was just what I needed to get in the mood for Christmas. It is all too common to get a 'Chrismassy' themed book that is saccharine sweet and puke worthy so this was a breath of cold frosty air at a time of chaos. Matt's sense of fun broke me out of my mad panic buying and delivering and gave me back my sanity. Lots of laugh out loud moments and can be read all year round. Fab
I love Matt Dunns book and this didn't disappoint. Was really funny and easy to relate to, think a few people gave me weird looks when I was smiling while reading on the train
I was saving this book to read around Christmastime hoping it would put me in the holiday spirit. Aside from the fact that this is about a Christmas party, there isn't anything relating to Christmas about the book. The book revolves around a group of people who work at the same company. The company was recently purchased by another company and no one knows what the future holds for them. The Christmas party was really more of a merger party, and it is where the characters expect to learn about the company merger and how their jobs will change. There are quite a few characters in here that we follow in the day or so before the party. Each one has their own set of issues but they are all connected and know each other. We basically follow them as they work through issues of love, gossip, marriage, babies, and relationships.
I considered putting this down early on, but I was too interested to see what happened and find out about the merger to put it down. It was an average read if your looking for something light that doesn't delve into any heavy issues.
This was a fun, quick read about one day in the life of several coworkers. The characters were engaging and fun, and the story read like a movie. I would definitely be interested in following these characters further. It seems like the perfect group for a series of books.
