I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!!
Ive posted a full review on Goodreads and I look forward to reading more from this author!
Overall Thoughts: Since this was a fairly short novella, I didn’t necessarily expect the author to be able to craft too fantastical of a story, but what this author was able to create in 80 pages ended up really surprising me! It was a quick but great read, and exceeded my expectations in every way! While the end wasn’t a twist, it definitely wasn’t expected, and that was one of my favorite parts! Overall an enjoyable read that I would definitely recommend!
I unfortunately was not able to read this book before the archive date. Someday I hope to read and review it for my blog.
This 80 page novella was short to say the least. It was even quicker to read then I had imagined. I went into this book knowing nothing about it. I hadn't even read the synopsis about the book. I was just looking for a quick good read. That is exactly what I got. I didn't think this novella was going to have to much detail but which I wish it would have had more. I came out of the story with a feeling of it lacking. It had no back story to what had happened to this world. It didn't give us much detail at all about this world except Transport Authority had control but there was a terrorist group trying to bring them down called TRACE. After I had finished the book was when I learned that this book is set in the world from another book by Michael Bunker called Pennsylvania I believe. I feel if I had read that book or series first it would have made a little more sense. All in all though the novella wasn't bad. It was fast paced and action packed all the way to the end. I enjoyed it.
I found this to be a nice dystopian novella that packed a decent amount of story and action into a small number of pages. I would definitely recommend reading the series this novella takes place in, as I haven't and I do think that I missed out on some of the detail. but it is overall a very well written novella that I greatly enjoyed.
This book is a short-but-oh-so-very-good one! The author managed to pull me into the book in 80 pages! If that isn't art, then I don't know what is! The ending was unexpected and I loved the society they were in! The world-building is also great for such a short book! Overall: I loved this book!
“The Girl in the City” eBook was published in 2015 and was written by Philip Harris (http://www.solitarymindset.com). Mr. Harris had published eight novels and novellas. This is the first publication in the ‘Leah King’ trilogy.
I categorize this novel as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence. The story is set in a post apocalyptic future. the primary character is fifteen year old Leah King.
She and her father scrape out a living in the city. She sneaks outside the city to scavenge scrap for resale in the wastelands. While making her way back home one day a man dies at her feet after being shot. Before he dies he tosses her a package.
That package begins a chain of events that have the oppressive Transport Authority chasing her. She must find her way out of the city if she is to survive. She has no idea who she can trust to help her escape.
I thought that this 80 page Young Adult novella was interesting, and was a quick 1.5 hour read. The characters and writing were OK, but I felt the story had just begun to be told when it ended. Perhaps that is just my bias generally against short stories. The cover art is OK, but really does not give much insight into the story. I give this novel a 3.6 (rounded up to a 4) out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31181778-john-purvis).
A very good short story. However I feel that instead of a short story it's really the first part of a book. There are two short stories that follow so I'm hoping they flesh things out a bit. While I like short stories I feel there is a lot more to be said and told about Leah.
I am not familiar with the works by a different author that created the world Harris is borrowing for these stories but I'm definitely intrigued to look into it more. It appears his science fiction dystopian world is quite complex with many socio-economic aspects that I find very intriguing. Can't wait to read more about it!
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review. Don't believe me? Check out the other books I've had eARCs for that I gave terrible reviews to. ;)
