This was an enjoyable read. I have not read the rest of the series but I am interested in doing so now. There is romance, action, and a supernatural element. I didn’t really like Ruth that well but I enjoyed the story.
Many thanks to EIS Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Oh my word! Did I just read this book correctly? Was it truly about the evil, mean spirited Ruth! Oh YES it is and it's amazing! Ruth's story is simply a one sitting, can't put down, grab a cup of coffee and don't get up til it's over story. I wasn't just hooked I was GLUED to the edge of my seat. I wanted to know what happened next. Oh and before I forget I call dibs o QUIN! Sorry ladies he's mine
The characters in this book are well thought out, in my opinion. They have depth and their own stories. As the book unfolds and ensnares you into its depths, the twists and turns become more exciting. Secrets, lies, love, treachery, it is all there. A very good read. The main character is not some whiny privileged girl that gets swept up and taken care of by "the man". The roles of each character play their own part and one cannot exist without the other. The story starts out as most do, a girl, a suspicious circumstance, the reader being drawn in wondering what is happening. The back story cuts in and the real story starts. The story appears to be in the form of remembering things, in the beginning. Kind of like catching the reader up to speed to present day. Reminiscing about past events, places, people. Wondering what they are doing, wishing you couldn't think about it anymore and then, finding something to distract yourself and draw you out of the memory. As the first main character plays out her memories and brings herself to the present, the next part starts in on the other characters. They are introduced, in my opinion, by personality. This conclusion is drawn by the conversations and thoughts that are revealed as they interact with one another. Again, as the book progresses, it gets a bit more tangled when "family members" end up meeting the same woman at different times. The mysterious woman has also showed up while the family is trying to solve a very serious problem that keeps following them around. As they become suspicious of the arrival of this woman, the paranoia sets in and the personalities of the characters become much more concrete. Once they figure out that the woman is not quite one of their family but alike to other families that they share similar qualities with, they start to trust her a bit more. This creates tension, of course, between the two male figures that have met her. When the cards end up being laid out on the table, tempers flair and plans are devised both known and unknown to all that are involved. This book does not leave you hanging. It creates a range of emotions from love to hatred, regret to sympathy. It is not lacking in details either. The characters are very well described as are the scenes around them. It has love, lust, an age old revenge plot, and magic. Truly a wonderful read.
