WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW is a superb debut mystery/thriller.
Two of the main characters are a cop and journalist, who were considerably affected by the serial killer case they broke or covered. The killer is behind bars, his wife is struggling to exist in a world that has tarred her with the same brush. Then, a series of murders connected to Seever occurs, which brings the cop, journalist and wife back into the story. Detective Hoskins and former-journalist Peterson see an opportunity to get their lives back on track.
This is a superb debut. Chaney's characters and prose are excellent and well-composed. The dialogue is excellent, and the plot grips you from early on and doesn't let you go. Really enjoyed this. Recommended.
It’s hard to find anything new in the serial killer arena, but Chaney seems focused on the collateral damage caused by such extreme cases.

This novel is tightly written and easily followed but I disliked all characters which makes it difficult for me to get involved in the book.
Both lead detectives have major problems not truly explained as to why they do. Loren disappearing for no apparent reason and separate investigations not shared by partners didn't make sense. It ended fine but after the unsettling story one of the detectives being the suspect would've made a more logical ending
