Snarky. Fast-paced. Easy 5 stars. My favorite kind of YA fantasy fun!
This is one of those books I didn’t want to finish. I was actually really sad about it! And I wasn’t even trying to read it quickly, it just happened. It felt like I’d discovered my love for reading again. Or, at least, come out of a reading slump (finally!)
This was... well it was fun! The writing felt a bit abrasive at times, but the whole of it was incredibly fun. I had a hard time tolerating Alosa and the pirate talk—why is it always so annoying—but it was a fast paced book full of adventure. I chose to ignore the romance for the most part because I wasn't a fan, but otherwise, I'm interested to see where this goes!
Daughter of the Pirate King was a story that I was soooo excited for because I am a huge fan of stories about pirates. Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse Of The Black Pearl is my favorite film, so I had high hopes. To start with the positive, this is a book that I think young readers may enjoy. Especially if they have never read a pirate book before, but unfortunately for me who has read many, this one was a bit dissapointing. It mainly has to do with plot and character development. I'm hoping the second book improves on these two areas because if it does than I believe that it will be a much more enjoyable series!
I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!!
Ive posted a full review on Goodreads and I look forward to reading more from this author!
I really liked Daughter of the Pirate King and forgot to write the review! It says a lot for me to actually remember what I had for breakfast much less a book I read some time ago, which is such a credit to Ms. Levenseller in creating such a strong and memorable character in Alosa and in creating an awesome pirate and siren world. I've followed Ms. Levenseller without realizing it and I can't wait to continue reading her worlds.
I blew through this novel in a good way. It was fun to read Alosa's trials and tribulations as she navigates behind the scenes to find the piece of the map for her father, and her interactions with Riden and the other crew members. While some scenes seem extremely far-fetched (like how Also gets out of her cell so many times and no one mind Riden pays mush attention), Levenseller does do a good job telling a engaging, fun story with some twists and turns along the way. Daughter of the Pirate King is a great in-between read where you don't want to invest in a long series (its a duology!) or you're looking for a moderate page count.
For a reader looking for an quick, and easy read, some piracy, and bass-ass heroine to boot, this gem is for you.
I ended up listening to this book on audio and the narration had me hooked!! I loved the banter between the characters and just couldn't stop listening to this story! So well done!
This was a very good YA and I can't wait to read the second one!! It was on the edge of your seat devourable.
Alosa, the titular Daughter of the Pirate King (literally), has a plan: get herself 'kidnapped' so she can steal a priceless map that will lead to a treasure island. Everything goes off without a hitch....at least until she gets on the enemy's ship and finds her attempts at thievery foiled by the inconveniently attractive first mate.
Yeah, not going to lie, I didn't get far into this one. Alosa's attitude was grating straight from the very beginning, in the same way that I find Caleana from the Throne of Glass series grating. (So, on the flip side, if you liked ToG this book might be right up your alley!) I've got no problem with braggadocios characters, but when the actions don't match the claims I can't help but grind my teeth. Alosa spent the whole first chapter assuring the reader that no really, we promise she's really good at stuff! And that assurance was apparently necessary since nothing she did on page conveyed that fact. "But wait! She was trying to get captured on purpose!" Yeah, that's kind of the problem, she let her attitude and pride get in the way of that plan and only successfully got captured anyway because she kind of sucks. *sorrynotsorry* It was hard to believe any of her brags after that, as the book continually made sure she couldn't follow through on any claims, and then the love interest came in and was every single other snarky, asshole LI I've seen in YA over the past few years and...nah. Nope. Not doing the rest of this book.

This review has been a long time coming. Especially since at this point, I have already read book two. I feel like it is never too late to right a review, plus Tricia Levenseller is one of my favorite authors hands down. She writes amazing characters.
Daughter of the Pirate King is easily a five star read. Alosa is such a great character. I really enjoyed her fearlessness and how much she cares for her crew. Alosa is unpredictable and she is so enjoyable. I wanted to know what she was going to do next. As the reader gets to know Alosa and the secrets that she is hiding, you become super invested on what will happen next.
One of the things that I really enjoyed with Daughter of the Pirate King is that all the characters are developed so well. Every single character in this book was written so well and I really enjoyed each of them. Each member of Alosa's crew had their own personality and back story. I thought this really added to the story.
Being the daughter of one of the most powerful and dangerous pirates, Alosa is looked at someone who can be an easy ransom. Alosa doesn't always know who she can trust. Then Riden enters the story and turns Alsoa's world upside down. Riden is trying to track down Alosa's father's keep. Alosa is not so easy to give up important information. It was very interesting getting to know all the players in this pirate game.
Daughter of the Pirate King is such a great book. Tricia Levenseller did such a great job at writing this book. I enjoyed every single second of it. To the fact that I have now read this book twice already.
This was a fantastic tale with magic, pirates, and sass. I love this trend towards female pirates and mermaid books. It's something I've wanted for a long time and this definitely lives up to the hype. I loved the sass of our MC not to mention how dreamy the love interest is. I can't wait to see where this adventure ends in the second one!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to review this ARC of Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Leveseller.
Alosa is a fiery red headed pirate princess with a mission to accomplish. Her father is the pirate king, and while he trained her well, his love is also conditional based on performance, so the pressure is on. Alosa only has her eye on the treasured map that she must obtain, until her handsome captor Riden throws a romantic wedge into her plans.
What a fun YA adventure. I really loved how multi dimensional Alosa is. She's tough, not afraid of pain or captivity, trained to fight and withstand harsh conditions. But, she also likes to dress like a lady, and isn't ashamed of letting her heart lead.
I must say this book was certainly fun to read! As the title explains, Alosa is the daughter of the pirate king and was sent to find/steal piece of a map that will lead her father to an island of treasures. However, what Alosa didn't expect was to be drawn to Riden, the first mate of her enemy's ship. Since her capture was deliberate, Alosa cannot fully reveal her true pirate skills or her captors might become too suspicious. But, as Alosa spends more time on board, the more her attraction to Riden becomes more complicated. Plus, he is frustratingly too perceptive for his own good. As her deadline comes closer, and still no map, Alosa has to rely on other abilities to help her. And that's not necessarily a good thing. Full of action, pirate drama, and a bit of romance you will truly enjoy Levenseller's debut! Excited for book two coming out next month! Recommended for ages 16 and up!
Trigger Warning: Torture, Abusive Parent
-->I made it to Chapter 20 and quit two days ago and I don’t want go back. The same things keep happening over and over and over. It’s the climax, a major twist just happened and all I can think of is “get on with it already!!!!”
-->The whole “search the ship” sh!t could and should’ve been cut shorter, IMO to help solve this dragging on nonsense and really, do we need 12 scenes of her being superior and running away? No thank you.
-->Outed a gay pirate. Not cool.
-->Knocked people out and stripped them.
-->The only other note I have, besides the quote I shared on Tuesday, is in Chpt. 11 when they kiss again and “his lips taste even better than I expected.” But they’ve made out before so ???? What were you expecting, tasting his brother's asshole?
-->All I can think is typical and I don’t care.
Lift up your anchors and get ready to sail into a swashbuckling tale of pirates, swoons, magic, and the quest to reach the greatest treasure of all!
What I Loved:
First off, I must say that Daughter of the Pirate King is better than what I expected it to be, and my expectations were pretty sky high. This book had me hooked from the very first page and did not let me go. I basically flipped pages non-stop, something I had not done in ages. Honestly, it was amazing.
This book introduces Alosa, a female pirate captain who purposefully gets herself kidnapped in order to find a piece of the map that will lead her to a legendary treasure. This character is fierce, smart, and simply bad-ass. A brilliant pirate who doesn't need anyone's protection for she is the one everyone needs protection OF. It has been a while since I've enjoyed a character as amazing and empowering as hers and I'm sure many will also find her incredible. Definitely adding Alosa to my favorite strong and independent YA heroines list.
Since Alosa finds herself aboard an enemy ship, we get to meet several characters among the crew. Some were nice and others quite terrible (they are pirates after all), but the one who stands out the most is the Captain's first mate, Riden. His wits and personality rivals Alosa's, making it extremely entertaining to read every scene in which they are thrown together. If you enjoy banter, then you will LOVE reading about Riden and Alosa in close quarters (not to mention the possible swoons!).
And, while reading Daughter of the Pirate King, I noticed how much I've missed reading books set aboard ships and how fascinating it is traveling across the sea. The adventure, the thrill of dangerous waters and discovering its dark secrets always takes my breath away, and I'm happy to say that Tricia Levenseller captures everything perfectly. Every page entranced me like magic, filling me with a strong need to jump inside and join Alosa's crew to follow her in her seafaring (piracy) adventures! Oh, but minus the deadly situations, of course.
What Left Me Wanting More:
The only thing that left me wanting more from this book was right at the ending. After everything we go through, I expected a more dangerous confrontation. It was over before it had begun, thus leaving me a bit bummed. But other than that, this book was so great!
Final Verdict:
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller is THE book to read if you love adventure, banter, a bit of magic, and lots of action! Trust me, you won't be able to put this book down for it will pull you under before you can say 'SEA'.
When I heard of this book, I was all over it! I knew it would be a cool read since it was about a female pirate. But I didn't know it would be THAT good.
The best thing about this was the narrator. When I first tried reading this, I tried reading a physical copy, but I also tried making a pirate accent in my head that was no where near as good as this one. I'm so glad I decided to read this the right way lol The narrator made this story and I'm so glad I convinced my library to get this one!
I also loved Alosa and how strong she was. There were so many instances I thought it was all over, but she always outsmarted everyone. I also loved how she kick ass she was. She could fight and she was still beautiful. I loved that. And then her crew were all female too? I really loved that. I'm not sure I have ever read a book about a pirate.
Last but not least, I loved the fast-pace of the book. For it to basically be about her being kidnapped, I loved that there were still some surprises throughout the book. I can't wait to see what the next book has her do.
The only thing I wasn't fond of was the way the entire synopsis told the entire book. I'm glad I didn't read it until after I finished the book this time, because it would have ruined it for me had I read it before. I like to know the surprises as they come, not have them be revealed before I even crack open the book.
This book was definitely something I wasn't expecting. Me and the book were off to a rocky start, but we came came together in the end. I'm so glad I decided to give this one a try again in the audio world.
Adventure, intrigue, pirates, sirens, a lost treasure. This book has it all. I loved Daughter of the Pirate King because Alosa is a strong female character and has the confidence to save herself from any situation. The witty back and forth banter between her and Riden kept the book light and funny while Levenseller layered the plot and enriched the characters. All the characters were fully developed and none fit the true "bad guy" caricature. The ending was very satisfying, bringing part of the arc to a satisfying close but clearly setting up for the next book. Highly recommend for all high school libraries.
I've had Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller on my TBR for a while now, and I'm seriously kicking myself for waiting so long to read it. I mean, not only is it about pirates, but LADY pirates, which are definitely the best kind! I really enjoyed this book so much more than I expected to. It was great!
There are so many characters in this story that I absolutely loved, including the main character, Alosa, who just happens to be a pirate princess, and is completely awesome in every single way. I loved everything from her snarky attitude, to the fact that she could hold her own in almost any situation. Meaning, she's a badass, but one with a kind heart. She's definitely one of my favorite heroines, especially because of the pirate thing. *wink* There are a lot of great characters in the story, I could seriously go on and on about them, but I'd rather you read the book and meet them for yourself!
As you've probably gathered so far from my rambling so far, I really enjoyed this book. I have a thing for all things pirates, and this being about a pirate princess was right up my alley. There are seriously not enough pirate books in my life at the moment, and the few I have read have been awesome. I'd love to have more! This book is definitely a welcome addition, and I can't wait for my finished copy to arrive.
Overall; I really enjoyed reading Daughter of the Pirate King SO MUCH, and I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the sequel, which is currently untitled, but is set to release in 2018. I must know what's going to happen next for Alosa and her crew!
Happy Reading!
Hmm. I knew that this wasn't going to be historical pirates, but the political system here didn't make a lot of sense.
This was a fun read! The protagonist was cocky and smart-alecky in a fun way. I loved how strong and independent she was. I also liked how it didn't turn into a full blown romance, but more of a simmer between two people that weren't supposed to be simmering together. We ended up purchasing this one for our library and it has gotten decent circulation. I think the cover could be improved (it doesn't quite display the powerful, fun, badassitude of the main character). I will definitely read the next one!
