Loved this book and it's hints of the movie An Affair to Remember. The author has a nice easy to rea style and great sense of humour too! I'll be watching for her next book!
i'd never read an opal carew book before, but when i read other people's reviews i realized that it's apparently her thing to have her books appear to be normal contemporary romances and turn out to be something unexpected. i'm pretty open-minded about the kind of romance books i read, i'm not one to go about clutching my pearls because "oh my, erotica or bdsm or threesomes or homosexuality or bisexuality." i have hard limits, like pedophilia and bestiality, for example, but i don't think those would surprise anyone.
but even though i'm open-minded, i also like to know what i'm getting myself into. and the blurb to a fare to remember barely touches what the actual romance is about. [n.b. i've noticed that the blurb has been updated on amazon to sort of hint of the actual story, but this was not the original blurb i read. the one i read actually had a different name for the main character and may have related to an earlier draft. but my point is still that i did not know what kind of book i was reading when i started reading it.] reid and stevie do have a one night stand, but then when they look to deepen their romance, reid's friend and business partner also falls for stevie and all of a sudden reid, stevie, and dylan are in a full-fledged ménage relationship. and no one is worrying about whose hands are where.
and it's kind of refreshing? so many of these ménage stories are really weird about incidental contact between the men, which never really makes sense to me, since they are basically having sex with the same woman and there's no way that works without touching. so i thought it was great that the guys were also into each other, even as they were also super into stevie. but i get that not everyone feels that way about this kind of thing, so if ménages or bisexuality are hard limits for you, then this isn't the book for you.
a fare to remember is also somewhat of an homage to an affair to remember, also known as my personal least favorite cary grant movie ever. i disagree with the ladies of sleepless in seattle (the one sort of homage to an affair to remember that i've actually ever liked).
which is to tell you that there is some high melodrama at the end of the novel that closely mirrors the story of an affair to remember and i was kicking myself for not realizing that of course this book was an homage to the movie. i didn't really pick that up at first even though i noted the title similarity. anyway, this was a quick, easy read.
The cover had me at hello! I was very intrigued with A Fare to Remember by Opal Carew. When I started reading I was quite surprised where the story went. Reid and Stevie meet in a cab and from the get go their attraction is damn near combustible! All in all a great erotic read.
This is such s hot sexy little piece! It's outside the norm and that was really refreshing. I love the idea of a female cabbie! The sex scenes were scorching!
This was my first Opal Crew book and I loved it! Plenty of sex and sizzle and I thought there was still enough storyline there as well not to be overlooked buy all the heat. I liked the characters and am interested in where they go next. I also liked the twist in the storyline with the accident. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read.
Received ARC for a fair and honest review
Stevie came from money, and is now working as a cab driver. Reid is a billionaire needing a cab. She's been burned before and he's intrigued by this female cabbie trying to downplay her looks.
The book has a some steamy interesting scenes, but be forewarned there is M/F, M/M, M/F/M scenes in this book. The author also tries to introduce a BDSM element which doesn't bother me, except in one scene Reid ties up Stevie and uses a ball gag on her, no safe word, no consent or anything. A couple other things that bothered me, no condom usage and no discussions of precautions? Reid's best friend enters the mix and again no condoms or discussions? The book turns from M/F to M/F/M though Reid and Stevie end up together, when Reid proposes he also says that she will have access to Dylan whenever she wants. But there is no clarity/definition of his role if he is truly part of the relationship or just an extra for the time being. The book ends leaving you wanting some clarification or an epilogue or something.
I enjoyed the book, it was a fast read and I give the book 4 stars because of the issues I listed above. I do enjoy this author, and look forward to the next book. Happy Reading!!
Opal Care never disappoints. This hot read is another winner.
I'm honestly pretty surprised at myself for finishing this book. At about one third the way through I'd really had it, but since I agreed to give an honest review, I stuck it out. Toward the ending of the book, at least something happened that didn't have to do with sex, and it' improved the story marginally. The tone of the book changed completely, though not all that much for the better. At least I can justify one more star for the rating just for an attempt at a storyline.
I found the plot extremely weak and the characters unbelievable and unappealing. But it was mostly the stupidity of the whole thing that annoyed me. The author was contradictory from one sentence to the next, leading me to wonder if she actually read what she'd just written.
This is supposedly a love story between two people who meet in a taxi when Reid gets into Stevie's cab one evening. She is naturally beautiful, and within minutes of meeting two things happen. One is that she starts referring to him as a billionaire to his face, even though he never said anything about himself other than he has a business, and the second is that they pop into a dark alley and have unprotected sex up against a wall. It is supposedly the best sex ever for both of them. Shaking my head here... it made me want to gag a little. I wondered if he were famous, and she recognized him, and that's how she knew he was a billionaire, but then she asked him his last name, so it was just her assumption that he never denies.
Soon after this, she meets his best friend Dylan, and despite the fact that Dylan does his best to humiliate her, she finds herself wildly attracted to him as well. She also starts referring to him as a billionaire, despite knowing absolutely nothing about him other than he wears expensive jeans and is Reid's friend. I totally do not get this. Apparently "billionaire" in the author's mind is someone who dresses in nice clothes and has a job, Wow.
The book is really a vehicle for sex scenes, and as a reader who enjoys reading a good one, I have to say they let me down almost every time. Quantity does not mean quality, dear author. And for some totally unknown reason, just calling someone "Sir" or "Master" probably doesn't turn women on as much as she'd like us to believe. Reid goes from telling her to call him by name to calling him "Master" and the whole thing comes across as sex written by an adolescent. It's just plain silly. I gagged again a bit. And any guy who ties a woman up without asking permission within hours of meeting her is NOT someone worth pursuing.
The contradictions I mentioned earlier abound. Reid first tells her he loves hearing her make noise, then he gags her and tells her not to make a peep when he removes the gag, but within seconds he is ordering her to beg loudly. He tells her he loves it when she begs. Oh ugh. Make up your mind. The author also says Stevie didn't pack any of her sexy underwear, but miraculously the next day she is wearing sexy panties. So... which is it? Later she goes back to her apartment and picks up her sexy stuff.
Naturally Dylan is thrown into the mix so they can carry on a threesome. And this arrangement seems pretty poorly concocted. It also resulted in what seemed to me as totally devoid of any care for Dylan's feelings by the other two. He's just a toy apparently. Oh, excuse me... a Billionaire Toy.
I got the feeling that the author had a checklist of things that were supposed to make these people interesting and the story compelling. Billionaires. Beautiful, headstrong woman. BDSM (was that even what this was supposed to be??). Threesome. But what I got out of it was: three people repeatedly having unprotected sex with a stranger and the main male character professing undying love after about a day and a half. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The ARC has some serious editing issues. Perhaps these will be corrected before it goes public.
I've enjoyed previous books by this author, and the concept of this one definitely intrigued me - a female cab driver who meets a sexy billionaire? yes please! As it turns out, I've got mixed feelings about the execution. Yes, some of the sex scenes were super hot, including ones where Reid's best friend Dylan are part of the mix. The story quickly turns from a twosome into a menage, and there are m/m and m/f and mixed scenes here as Dylan and Reid discover that in pleasing Stevie they enjoy pleasing each other too.
But there were some things that were problematic for me. There's a scene early on where Reid uses a ball gag and ties Stevie up - and there has been no conversation about consent/safe words. What if she doesn't like it? What if she wants to stop? She's got no way to tell him. If you want to introduce BDSM elements into a story, then you need to bring up everything that makes it viable including consent and after care. Later on there's a double penetration scene with no prep - ouch! The conflict and surprising plot twist that comes in the second half is a bit out of the blue and I've a hard time believing that if you were in a somewhat committed relationship, you'd let the things happen that do in this story. Eventually we do get a happy ending with Reid and Stevie professing their love for each other and Dylan along for the ride (not sure how long he will fit into the picture as it isn't a triad relationship exactly, more of a twosome with an extra). If you're not so concerned about plot details and just want some hot sex scenes, you'll find lots to enjoy here if you can overlook some of the things that troubled me. I'll still read more from this author in the future, but this one is a miss for me. 2.5 stars.

The fantasy elements of this are extremely fantastical, as in non-believable and not at all romantic. The story line feels more like the plot to porn than erotica (although geared towards women at least so it makes some attempt at actually having a plot, rather than just a random encounter). The sex scenes are fine, it is the story in between these that is severely lacking. The male characters are scarcely described or differentiated by clothes and hair. She never even states what they do for a living, although it is a great concern to her that the rich guys are not like her estranged father. One moment the main male character is "jealous" of the female main protagonist and the next he is concerned mainly with her pleasure and willing to indulge in male on male action, although this has never apparently been of interest to him before simply because "it gets her hot". He is even okay letting the other male "pleasure his woman" even when he isn't present (feeling relieved that she at least felt bad about it since it could convince her to "stay" with them and apparently had no ego whatsoever that it took the presence of a second man to "win" her..)Then there is a completely ripped off trope of missing an important assignation to show her love because of an accident and pride, but it all works out in the end due to a concerned "friend" and no one is upset due to lack of trust issues or any other messy actual human emotions that this could cause and they go right back where they started, apparently neither of the two men have been able to move on to other love interests during the months long hiatus.
Opal Carew always writes a raunchy, no holds barred tale that often touches on borderline taboo topics. But whatever she writes, it’s sure to have an impact and delve into the hottest, inferno of passion that will sizzle and burn from start to finish.
Make sure you go in with an open mind, otherwise this story will rip your delicate sensibilities to shreds.
Opal Carew is dependable for hot stories. I know I can count on her to set my kindle on fire! I adored Stevie. Her independence and strength, with a layer of vulnerability had me rooting her on from the start. And Reid...he was so hot, the chemistry between the two of them off the charts. Add Dylan to the mix and lets just say, I was fanning myself as I read. So many menage books have the two men focusing on the woman, but these two friends weren't afraid to explore each other. That was an interesting element. Such a great story with the perfect amount of heat and enough dirty to make you blush.
Another keeper from Opal Carew with a nice homage to the movie Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr movie An Affair to Remember. A wickedly hot romance between the beautiful feisty and fiercely independent taxi driver Stevie and the two sexy alpha males.
I think that the blurb for this book gives a false narrative of what to expect of this story.
Luckily, I'm pretty open-minded and can deal with some pretty taboo things in my romance novels but I foresee some upset readers who stumble upon this book and get a little surprise from the actual content.
The sex scenes were actually pretty frickin hot and I loved reading them but even I couldn't really believe in the love story between Reid and Stevie. The character and story development were just too lacking for me to truly enjoy as a complete story. However, if you're looking for a good story for some one-handed reading, go ahead and pick this one up.

Well, this one took an unexpected turn...
This isn't the first book I've read by Opal Carew, so by now I knew what to expect: lots of sex and not as much dialogue and story as I like. So when I started reading and there were pretty much only sex scenes, I wasn't surprised. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Carew writes very hot sex scenes but I prefer more dialogue and story to go with it.
There are however a few things that didn't sit right by me. Like how does Reid know Stevies full name when they have never met before? And that one Dom/sub scene which was thrown in, but didn't feel right.
Anyway, halfway through there began to be some story (not gonna elaborate, because spoilers, right?) and I was pleasantly surprised. I started to enjoy the book more and more. Until at about 80% when the book seemed to get it's happy ending soon and there was still 20% to read. What happened after that, well, let's say I did not expect to read this story when I originally opened the book and started reading.
To keep this short, I'd say this book is definitely worthwhile. It's hot, has a nice storyline and two hot guys. A girl can't ask for more, can she?
Stevie is a cab driver who caught her boyfriend with another woman. Reid is a billionaire in town for a meeting. They have sex in an alley and then she goes to the apartment he's renting. She doesn't want a relationship but the more time she spends with Reid the deeper she falls.
The problem I had with this story was Stevie constantly pushing Reid away with one hand but also pulling him in with the other. She wanted to do things for herself and not depend on others until she has no choice. Be prepared for extremely explicit sex scenes. Threesomes. Some of it seemed rushed but I couldn't stop reading it.
I loved the premise of this story -- a cabbie driver and a billionaire. The heroine's fierce independence was an admirable strength that made me like her. It's a personal favorite trait in characters. And the hero...My God he was a real gem and a joy. Both of the heroes actually. I was quite surprised by how taken and committed they were with the heroine (I guess I'm still too in the billionaire stereotype). But that just made it all the more sweet and not to mention super sexy. There were a few things I had trouble with like how certain scenes and situations were glossed over and as a reader I would have loved to see fleshed out a bit more. But it did keep the angst on the low, so that was good. There was another thing that I had trouble with but it's a bit spoilery?? But yeah, I had questions. Overall, can't complain. This was an enjoyable and delicious read. ;)
