Thank you for the arc, unfortunately I did not finish it, I just wasn't the right audience for this book.
Sorry I had an emergency in my life and was unable to submit this review. This is an awesome read and I highly recommend this to everyone.
A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi. I did not get a chance to read this before it was archived. So many books and not enough time!
i really enjoyed the world and the characters. vikram and gauri make such a nice, unpredictable pairing. their relationship really pull through and makes the book so much better. their banter is honestly the life of the book. without it, the book would probably drag and be somewhat boring.
this book is so well written and developed. the world is phenomenal, well thought out and just perfect.
A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi is just as stunning as the first book in this series, The Star-Touched Queen. Although, I think I loved it more which is really uncommon with sequels so I can only imagine how much I will love the next one. Roshani's writing is exquisitely beautiful, and her characters are amazing. Her world building skills whisk you away to a new land, filled with danger and intrigue. Gauri is a strong, determined heroine that I fell in love with immediately. And Vikram gives me heart eyes. I highly recommend this book!
A Crown of Wishes is the second book in the Hindu-inspired fantasy series by Roshani Chokshi. It tells the story of Maya’s little Gauri as she deals with the absence of Maya during Maya’s adventures in The Star-Touched Queen. Gauri is desperate; shunned from her family, she teams up with an attractive if potentially untrustworthy prince from another land to participate in the Tournament of Wishes. The winner gets one wish — whatever they most desire. If they survive the tournament.
When I read A Crown of Wishes, I thought, “It isn’t as good as the first book, but it’s GOOD.” The setting is in India pre-Western influence, a land divided into small, ever-battling kingdoms. The rich Hindu mythology and pantheon are reimagined in this tale. Gods and goddesses, monsters and creatures, wishes and magical objects are all very reachable and dangerous. It made for a fascinating and wonderful backdrop for this creative story.
The characters are deep, developed, and dangerous. And the Tournament of Wishes went just as such a tournament should, full of mind-bending puzzles, danger, serious competitors, and creative creatures.
I recommend this book to fans of Caraval and of non-Western YA fantasy.
I received a complementary copy of this book. All opinions are my own, and I am not obligated to provide a positive review.
I really wanted to love this book.
But i just didn't. So disappointing.
It completely lost me about the halfway point and just never got me back.
As with her first novel, I absolutely adored the story Chokshi told. Her writing style is beautiful, and the characters engaging and full of life.
What a stunning companion novel/indirect sequel to THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN. I loved this so much, and it was fantastic to see how much the author has grown between the books.
The world-building is exquisite, bright and dangerous. I especially loved the juxtaposition of Gauri and Vikram’s personalities, respectively pragmatic and hopeful. Where THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN felt more like a fairy tale, this felt like an epic come to life. And what a stunning cover!

Lexi's Thoughts:
Chokshi's lyrical writing style is flowery and enchanting. The tale of the two Tournament of Wishes contestants, Gauri and Vikram, is epic, powerful, and at times confusing.
The magical world of Alaka is a dangerous place. And the many, many characters Gauri and Vikram encounter along the way to the tournament and throughout the tournament are fantastical and vicious. A favorite is the Serpent King and his wife. Their story is learned in bits and pieces but feels as if it is deep and could hold its own.
The adventure of the tournament stages and the threats from the other contestants is well written. But it was truly the end of the book that bumped my rating up to four stars. Once Gauri and Vikram leave Alaka and are back in their own kingdoms, they have decisions to make. All I can say is what a garden.
Roshani Chokshi is a rising female novelist that creates stories that transport the readers into other cultures. Each character is someone you can imagine. I am looking forward to each novel she writes. They are better than the last.
A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi is a beautiful follow up to The Star Touched Queen. Both books are written to be standalones. You can read them in order or out of order or just one and not the other but I recommend that you start with The Star Touched Queen.
The characters were fantastic in this book. I loved them all. I thought Chokshi did such a great job bringing these characters to life. I love how there is so much depth to each character. They are all beautifully written. I really felt like there was an easier connection to these characters than the previous book.
Really you need to read this book just because Chokshi’s words are so beautiful. There is so much imagery across the page. The characters are in a competition during this book and people have to team up. I really liked the character dynamics and seeing how every interacted with each other. I definitely think A Crown of Wishes is a must read.
I absolutely adored the Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi, but I'll have to admit that "A Crown of Wishes" did not meet the same standards set by that book. The writing, however, was as delightful and poetic as always!
Review
A CROWN OF WISHES is the companion novel to The Star-Touched Queen, a novel that is on my favorites shelf, and one that I am so glad I finally took the time to read.
I did not think it possible, but I may have enjoyed this story even more than its predecessor.
Get ready to be transported to a realm of wonder.
Its pages are filled with such beautiful writing which easily transports its readers to a lush fantasy-world filled with magic, capricious gods, daring quests and some very swoon-worthy romance.
In this story, Roshani Chokshi spins an adventuress tale of danger and magic, staring two unlikely allies.
Gauri, the princess of Bharata and Vikram, the cunning prince of neighboring land, team up to win the Tournament of Wishes which promises one wish to its victor. Something both desperately want and need in order to help their kingdoms.
“Stories are boundless and infinite, ever-changing and elusive,” said Kubera. “They are the truest treasure and therefore my dearest possessions.”
I love reading stories that feature quests and A CROWN OF WISHES is all that and more.
What makes this such a great read is the fantastical world created — one filled with odd magic, mythical creatures and mercurial gods all set in an enchanted city where the competition takes place. The Lord of Wealth is a bit of a trickster and, as a reader, you never quite know what he has in store for our heroes.
“Enchantment abraded the dusk until there was only magic left to draw into our lungs. Not air. The music moved us to dance, and sent us spinning around one another as if our gazes were hooks and hinges, and our very dreams hung off of them.”
Besides the richly imagined and vivid world, A CROWN OF WISHES features the kind of characters you come to care about.
Both Gauri and Vikram have fun quirks and personal obstacles the need to overcome, making them feel real and relatable to.
If you’re a fan like I am of the enemies-to-more trope, then you’ll love seeing how these two characters overcome their differences and team up on an epic adventure.
“He smiled. A true smile. I knew his smirks. His half-grins. Even halfhearted and lopsided upturns of his mouth. This smile was different. It was soft and unguarded. And it softened me in return. I had put that smile on his face and I felt strangely territorial about it. I wanted to keep it.”
In the End
I loved everything about this book. This is a story about a journey — a personal and physical one that both Gauri and Viram experience together and the growth and change they both go through really made the story a wonderful read. A CROWN OF WISHES weaves magic and wonder into each word while making readers fall head-over-heels for its characters. Highly recommend — a must for fans and readers of young-adult fantasy.
I'm just seeing that I never reviewed this (and very late in doing so!). Chokshi continues to have the same rich prose and eloquent writing style she did with her first book. I really liked reading about Guari and Vikram's journey. 3.5 stars.
What Did I Think Of A Crown Of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi?
I think there's something so evocative and lush about Chokshi's writing. Her second book A Crown Of Wishes is a companion to The Star-Touched Queen. This book stars Gauri and Vikram - who are from neighboring kingdoms that aren't exactly BFFs. It features one of my favorite tropes - where two enemies have to team up to get what they want. There's a competition called the Tournament of Wishes. The winner gets a wish, right. So, Gauri is up for the tournament. Meanwhile, the relationship between the two goes from hate to love, but super slow. As you all know, I am a huge fan of the slow burns.
On the whole, Chokshi's book is beautifully written. I think that it solidifies that I expect everything she writes to be amazing. Chokshi is brimming with talent. And man, can she write the heck out of a hate to love romance. If you have not yet read anything by Chokshi, change your life. She's got like three YA books out and I think two MG? I don't know. There's a few to pick from though. Myself, I am eager to begin the copy of The Gilded Wolves I have at home (thanks library!).
How's The Narration?
So, I borrowed this audiobook via Hoopla. However, I know a bunch of books disappeared off of Hoopla, so I actually cannot guarantee this one is still on there. Anyways, the audiobook of A Crown Of Wishes is narrated by Priya Ayyar. It is 13 hours and 46 minutes long. Of course I cannot abide listening at the normal 1X speed, so I did listen to this sped up. I liked Ayyar's narration, she has a lovely voice. She never sounds overwrought or too slow or boring. I didn't feel like my attention was all over the place with this audiobook. Eventually, I would like to re-read via physical book in the future though.
Absolutely fantastic writing and storytelling. Would recommend to literally everyone! Was finally able to read this very late and I'm so glad I finally got to it.
Beautifully written in a way that you didn’t even feel like you were reading. The story was one of a kind and the writing was flawless.
Gauri is a princess that has been betrayed by her own country and turned over to a neighboring enemy kingdom where she will surely be executed. She sees her one plan of escape when the Fox Prince asks to speak with her. Instead of killing him and escaping, she agrees to compete with him in a Tournament or Wishes in the Other World where they will both be granted one wish. But things change for them as they compete in the tournament and they find out that what they originally wanted might not be what they want in the end.
While this is the second book in the series, you don’t need to have read the first book to understand the plot of the second book as this book has a different set of main characters. The original main characters are mentioned but it’s more as a reward to the readers of the first book. I did read the first book like 2 years ago and didn’t remember much of the storyline and I actually ended up liking this book more than the original. This was a great mix of fantasy and romance and action and it was also exotic since it was set in India. I definitely recommend picking this one up!
beautiful second book in a fantastical written and for me unique feeling fantasy series. I love the setting, i love the characters... i love it all.
If you want to be taken away into a different world, and get swept up? give this a read!
