It just didn't work for me. DNF'd the series.
Sorry for the delayed review. I'm working on clearing out my Netgalley backlog.
I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!!
Ive posted a full review on Goodreads and I look forward to reading more from this author!
I've read this twice now, and I legitimately only remembered the first 20 pages and then like two other scenes, so that tells me it's not exactly memorable. The writing starts off pretty rough and either gets better or you just get used to it, as it occasionally feels written by a very young individual and relies on a lots of clichés. Though it did go a few different directions with some characters that I was pleased by simply because I wasn't expecting it. Aleta and Bree's friendship was one of the better aspects I enjoyed, but the romance between Bree and Caden kinda came out of left field.
I think the target audience should be middle-grade, as I think they would best suited to enjoying it, but for me, it lacked the oomph to keep me coming for book 2.
I was originally pushed to request this book, and the rest of the series, based on the covers and liking them at the time. In the end, I'm glad I did, because the story itself was interesting as well. While this book was predictable at moments, I ended up enjoying it nevertheless. I also always like elemental magic in stories, and I liked how it was incorporated in this one. The story itself was also fast-paced and overall easy to read. I'm intrigued to see where this story will continue to go in the rest of the series.
Held my attention. Came for the cover, stayed for the story.
I really could not get interested in this series, although they have lovely covers. I am keeping them in mind for our YA readers who love high fantasy with strong female characters.
My thanks to NetGalley and the author, Jennifer Ellision for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
This book had a lot of positive going for it. Feisty, but not perfect heroine, strong relationship between father and daughter, interesting plot line and curious magic system. To me, it worked that the MC had no clue about the magic and the world, so as she was learning, the reader was learning too. It came in fits and spurts though, so by 65% of the way in, I still didn't have a complete grasp of the magic system or the world. But neither did the MC, so I wasn't alone in that at least.
I don't know why, but this book just left me cold. It felt like it was missing something somehow. It was written at a decent pace. I was flying through it each time I picked it up, but I kept putting it down and not wanting to pick it up again. It also felt like, despite how quickly I was moving through it, that it was taking forever. In a weird time paradox, it both flew and dragged at the same time.
I tend to read one and two star reviews of books I'm on the fence about, to see if I should bother with the book and by reading the spoilers (I LOVE spoilers, saves me from having to read something if I don't like the way it went), I realized that while I was not disliking it like some did, I also wasn't loving it like others and that the ending didn't grab me enough to want to read to the end of the trilogy. Deciding that while this wasn't a bad book, it wasn't for me at this time, I put it down at 65%, and felt relief.
This in no way will reflect how others will feel about this book, just how I feel right now about it. 3, solid writing chops, stars. If you enjoy YA fantasy with a female protag and magic, you will probably like this trilogy. It just wasn't for me unfortunately.
This is the first book in the Threats of Sky and Sea series. I got a copy from NetGalley to review. This seemed like a decent YA fantasy story when I started the book but ended up being boring and predictable.
I loved the initial setup and I was intrigued by the world and characters initially. Bree is happy with her lot in life until everything changes. However as the story continues and Breena gets to the castle things really go downhill. There's just not much that happens in the remainder of the book. The things that do happen are very predictable. I found myself struggling to pay attention and keep wishing that things would just speed up and keep moving.
I also didn't find the characters all that engaging. You do get to know Bree and she is a pretty good heroine to read about; she comes off as a bit vanilla at times but is okay. However, the side characters are really lacking in depth. I struggled to picture Princess Aleta and her character seemed really inconsistent. Prince Cadin was very bland and I didn't like him at all. There just wasn’t enough side character development.
Overall this book was decently written but just wasn't all that unique or exciting. There are so many YA fantasies out there that are better than this one, I personally wouldn't recommend.

For some reason, this book kind of surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. A few aspects (like Bree's identity and ability) didn't particularly surprise me, but that's okay. The basic idea (people with control over the elements) reminded me a little bit of Melissa McShane's Extraordinaries series, but it was different enough that it still felt original.
I enjoyed the relationship between Bree (16/17) and her father, particularly their banter. Bree's personality and reactions to things felt very genuine to me, and I liked her. Aleta (16/17) grew on me, which I suspected she would. I liked Caden (18? 19? can't remember) from the start, and I appreciate the struggles he had between family and, as he put it, morality. Even Tregle (18? 19? can't remember) was pretty likable, even if his choices wavered between good and bad.
The writing was easy to read and understand, and it went quickly whenever I got the chance to read. I wish there had been a bit more description of the characters. The pictures I have of them in my head are pretty vague.
Lucky for me, I have the other two books already on my Kindle from NetGalley!
Note: Nothing objectionable.
Somewhat melodramatic and often times proved to be sluggish, but a fun adventure nonetheless.
Thank you for the chance to read THREATS OF SKY AND SEA however I have found that I've had to DNF this title as I couldn't get into the story or main character.
