It just didn't work for me. DNF'd the series.
Sorry for the delayed review. I'm working on clearing out my Netgalley backlog.
I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!!
Ive posted a full review on Goodreads and I look forward to reading more from this author!
First I would like to thank Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book to read and review. I overall enjoyed this installment in the series, and like what it added to both Bree as a character and her story.
I generally don't like when the romance is dragged out due to the separation of the MC and love interest, but I think it worked in Bree's favor. It gave her some space to grow, and made her stronger as a character. I also liked that we started to get Caden's POV in this story, as it added another layer to the narration that the first book was missing.
Again, this book was fast-paced and easy to read, just like the first book. However, this book is quite different from the first due to the drastic change in setting, but it was honestly refreshing. I can't wait to see where the final installment brings this story, and how it'll end!
THOUGHTS
What did I take so long to pick up this series? I mean seriously -- I've had the books for like forever! This book was a bit of an eye opening compared to Threats of Sky and Sea, there you are gently sucked into a very sweet and promising romance between Bree and Prince Caden.
Riot of Storm and Smoke the lovers are parted for the majority of the book and I have to say it did Bree the world of GOOD! *well partially* I get that Bree has had her world turned up side down, haunted by the person who killed her father and loosing her power is major but she becomes a bit of a *whiny biatch!* but she’s not the only one yes Prince Caden has also been threw the ringer and it’s changed him too. Torture will do that to a guy but its like he's had a bit of a personality change
There's one bit of the book that kinda annoyed/confused me - maybe I misread the book but the description of Caden and Bree doing more then kissing is more than confusing, one minute they’re kissing the next Bree is putting her clothes back on! She’s seventeen years old, I’m pretty sure it was more then kissing. I think my issue was in the way the scenes are written, the author appears to shy away from going into too much detail *I'm not looking for hot sex scene this is a YA Novel* but the scene is awkward.
While I'm bashing the book a little bit I'll also admit I can't wait to read the next installment especially due to the cliffhanger at the end *I shall not spoil it for you* Hopefully in Fall of Thrones and Thorns there will be more of the witty banter, more romantic and an epic finale.
**Thanks to the Author and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
I really could not get interested in this series, although they have lovely covers. I am keeping them in mind for our YA readers who love high fantasy with strong female characters.
*I received a free copy of those ebook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*
This book picks up right where the first left off. I enjoyed it just as much, even through the occasional editing mistakes (which I assume would be corrected in the final copy). It didn't suffer from the typical "second book syndrome," which was nice.
Bree's character grew a lot, and I like her even more than I did previously. She struggles with her Thrower abilities and her identity.
I loved the addition of Caden's perspective and feel like this chapters add a lot to the story. My opinion of him has only improved.
Aleta and Tregle are okay. Aleta grew on me in the first book, but for some reason, she kind of bothered me in this one. I wonder if it might by related to the revelation Kat made of her identity at the end of book one. Tregle sort of hovers around the periphery if the story and interjects himself on occasion.
I really appreciate that there's no love triangle. Sometimes when a character is introduced, I think, "This is it. This person is going to be the triangle." And I'm wrong every time. The relationships have enough struggles already, so it's nice not to have the addition of another interest. It feels more authentic, too. And so we have a few good friends and allies rather than a messy, multidirectional love story. (But we do have a good love story--don't mistake me.)
Biggest complaints;
- The phrase "back of the palm" makes no sense. I believe she means the back of the hand rather than the palm, which is the soft underside.
- For the most part, I still have trouble physically picturing the characters. Their personalities and such are developed well, but physically, I hardly know what they look like except that Aleta has dark hair and Bree has short, dark hair and blue eyes.
I'm excited to see how it ends (better be good), and luckily I have the third book on my Kindle already. (Thanks, NetGalley!)
Note: Some swearing (disappointing since the first one lacked it). Possible sex, but I'm not sure. That's how vague it was and how fast the scenes went dark.
This is the second in series and as exciting as the first ! I love this authors well crafted writing and ability to weave a exciting story. In this book Bree flees from the Kind and a series of events are put into motion. This action never ends as Bree escapes to her preferred kingdom and attempts to begin a life without her Father who has been murdered. I love this series and look forward to the next book. The ARC did not affect my review.
