I enjoyed this book. This is a nice c!can read and I recommend it.
Thank you WaterBrook & Multnomah, and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book for an honest review.
This was a very enjoyable story. It started out very dark and sad feeling, yet as the book progressed you could see the positive changes in the characters.
Rose had a dismal childhood growing up with a verbally abusive mother. Tragedy strikes in another community and Rose's bishop sends her off to help a widower with children. She agrees to a marriage in name only so she does not need to return to her family.
Rose and Joel develop a wonderful repore with one another and raise the children together. They both realize that somethng is happening to them when mispoken words could end their happiness.
I picked this book, from an author I haven't read before, because of a couple of reasons:
1. The cover attracted me from the very beginning.
2. It's a Christmas time romance
3. I was very curious about the storyline after reading the blurb.
The Angel of Forest Hill was a beautiful clean romance. It helped to clean my palate from all the other type of romances I read and enjoy so much *smile*
The characters are well crafted, so much so that I think this could be a relatable enough story for some readers. I don't know Amish culture or families personally but I like some aspects of how they live their lives. Their faith, their family units, the respect for their elders and how, in this book, in particular, there was no diminishing the woman because she stays at home.
Rose was a strong young woman that had to deal with her mother reaction to something that even she didn't understand, treating her only daughter like a servant for most of her life, making it so her only choice, when she was given one, was to marry a man she did not know just to stay away from her parents home.
Joel was stricken by grief when his beloved wife died after giving birth to his daughter Grace. He lived a life of putting one step in front of the other, barely living just to provide for his kids. Rose married him to stay and help with the children but he found himself living again thanks to her. Loving her was something he wasn't expecting but embraced with his heart when it happened.
There are so many things I could say about this book, good things, but I won't because I could get into spoiler territory and I want you to pick this book if you have the chance.
Plot-wise I liked it. I actually enjoyed it from beginning to end and stayed up until late so I could finish it before sleeping at night. I couldn't put it down and considering it's not my regular reading sub-genre, clean romances, that's a testament to the author and the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a good clean romance. It wasn't preachy, in my opinion, like some romances that put some much emphasis on God being the only way to salvation. I'm a Christian woman and this book reminded me of some of the reasons why faith is important, no matter how silly the situation.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book provided by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
This is so much more than a Christmas story. I felt for Rose as she tried so hard to listen to God as she struggled with very low self esteem. Her mother did Rose such an injustice. I like that the bishop in Rose's district found a way to rescue her. I'm glad Rose opened up to Joel about her feelings. This is a very emotional book and allows readers to see a very different Amish marriage. Highly recommended!
Great book! Rose leaves a difficult home life as the oldest and only daughter in a family of 11 younger brothers. She leaves everything she knows to help unknown Joel, Amish from a different community, who lost his wife in childbirth. Joel has 3 children under age 5, including the newborn, and desperately needs help. Rose joins his family and bring love and laughter to the home. Rose must heal from emotional wounds from her family and Joel learns how to live without the love of his life. Great story - difficult to put down. I absolutely fell in love with Rose and Joel!
A sweet story about a marriage of convenience and a wonderful lesson on forgiveness. This is a short fast read but carries a punch. Thank you NetGalley and WaterBrook for the free copy. This review is my honest thoughts on this book.
Angel of Forest Hill by Cindy Woodsmall is a heartfelt book about heartache, mercy, and hope.
Rose lives with her father, mother, and a multitude of brothers. She is asked to go to Forest Hill to help a young mother who is not doing well after the birth of her daughter. When Rose arrives, the community is in grief as the young mother has passed. By divine intervention, Rose quickly knows what to do to help the new baby and young children.
Joel is struggling to get by after his wife’s sudden passing. He can’t take care of himself, let alone his children and business. When his father proposes an arranged marriage between him and Rose, he is unsure but knows she would be a good mother for his motherless children.
The story continues to tell how Joel and Rose cope with the arranged marriage and raising three children.
Cindy delivered again with a beautiful story. This was an easy read that I completed in one day. The characters were well-developed and easy to fall in love with.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves Amish or Inspiration fiction.
I received a copy of from the netgalley and WaterBrook & Multonomah in return for my honest review.
Love the idea and the eventual conclusion, but the story felt so rushed. Wish there had been more detail and a bit more depth/investigation of the supporting characters. Still, very cute and a pleasant, one-evening read.
“The Angel of Forest Hill” by Cindy Woodsmall is a wonderful holiday book. Of course, Ms. Woodsmall is a great writer of Amish romance fiction and this book is one of those.
Rose Kurtz is the only daughter of twelve children in the Kurtz family. She has been doing the work of a grown woman since she was seven. Her mother is definitely NOT the motherly type, mostly finding fault with everything that Rose does and is. Rose has learned to keep her emotions and concerns to herself, saying nothing, which spares her further condemnation and humiliation. The bishop of the Amish community comes to the Kurtz’ farm and asks if Rose would be willing to help out another Amish family in Appalachia. The mother is not recovering after the birth of her third child, the other two being toddlers. The father needs help that the community cannot continue to give him, so after being with the children for a few weeks, Rose is asked to marry Joel, but have a marriage in name only.
The story continues and after a few years Joel finds that he is in love with Rose. Before he can talk to her and convince her that their marriage should be a true one, the community gets involved and things get out of hand. The resolution to their dilemma is simple and it is satisfying when they find they are of the same mind.
This book is cute, cute and sweet! I do read Amish books pretty often of late. I do believe this is the first time I have read this author. Rose marries Joel to help take care of his kinner, aka children. Between the rules of the Ordung, this author got a real story squished in there. I really liked that!
It's a Christmas book, but the message is timeless. My copy came from Net Galley. My thoughts and my options as well as my review are all my own. I have left this review because I can.
The Angel of Forest Hill by Cindy Woodsmall was the perfect way to end a wonderful season of Christmas romance reading. I've enjoyed reading Ms. Woodsmall's Amish romance novels for quite some time and this book is one of her best!
This story is full of Amish life, romance, Christmas and faith. The opening chapter was a bit shocking and written in such a way that I had to read this book through till the end. I couldn't bring myself to put it down!
I found the plot to be compelling with engaging characters. Rose (of course) was my favorite and I cried, laughed, agonized and cheered her on throughout this amazing story.
