A fantastic book! I learned so much about the importance of breath to your health and with practical exercises to help you improve
Breathe. It was very ironic that as I was reading this book, I heard three other people talk about how important breathing is to our health. The author was a clinical psychologist and she teaches classes on breathing. She tries in this book to give us the same information she teaches in her class. She says that teaching people how to breathe is giving them the easiest life hack ever. Breathing can help with physical issues with your body and emotional issues with your mind. She shows us how to measure how we breathe and then gives the steps on how to improve it and then you measure it again at the end. Her whole process only takes 14 days to start retraining your body to breathe appropriately. She challenges us to make a workout plan for the breathing just like we were would if we were going to run or go to the gym. She has illustrations with the instructions to help with the different breathing methods. One of the reasons that breathing is so important is that proper breathing nurses the cells of our body with oxygen and optimizes the function of the body on all levels. She says by changing our breathing will be able to control stress better. Our bodies main source of energy is oxygen. I believe I even read that our brain uses 20% of that oxygen. Once we start breathing more affectively we will also start feeling less stiffness in her neck and shoulders. We should be breathing from the diaphragm. She calls that the lower level breathing. It will feel like a workout even for people who actually work out. They may not be using the right breathing muscles and they will be able to feel a difference. She takes us through the four basic exercises that she teaches in her class.
She also calls out how important sleeping is and the relation to forgetfulness and memory loss due to lack of sleep and lack of oxygen. I would highly recommend this book. And I think I feel it's even more credible because I've been hearing the same thing from several different people within the last 30 days.
At the end of the book she share some take away points she summarizes them. She has a glossary of the types of breathing. I also recommend checking out her website where she shares even more information on breathing.
I was curious about this book that promised so much, and it would not cost me a penny to try since I already had everything I needed to get started. The author states that in 2 weeks, I’d notice a difference. My biggest hang-up was finding the time to add breathing exercises to an already busy day; however, there was that tempting promise that it would improve my life, and after all, the reps in the beginning were only supposed to take 3 to 10 minutes. So I committed to doing the two weeks. My biggest problems are: trouble sleeping, anxiety, lack of energy and I’m a bit overweight.
At this point I am at the one week mark. I can honestly say that my sleep has improved somewhat, and I am happy about that. I am finding doing one set of breathing exercises before I go to be bed to be a very relaxing ritual. I do the other set in the morning, because I couldn’t find another time to consistently do them, and that seems to be working out ok. At first, it really isn’t my preferred time because I usually hop out of bed the minute the alarm goes off and head for coffee. After a week, I’m beginning to think this might be a calmer way to start my day, and I’m glad I’m starting my day more relaxed.
The book continues with other exercises. Some of them are ones I am familiar with from the Yoga classes I went to in the past. The exercises promise things like better flexibility and posture. I haven’t tried them all yet—I’m still working on the beginning poses, but there is a lot of variety. I am feeling that this definitely worth working on.
As a health conscious person I was thrilled to receive this ARC from the publisher and author. I would like to extend my gratitude on this wonderful book. This is a key part of our health that most of us overlook until we lose the ability to breathe. This book will change your life. The ability to breath correctly affects our sleep, our everyday health and therefore how we age. .The key to knowing your breath and how it affects your energy, health and long term energy is all here presented simply and with easy to follow directions . I was struck by the large amount of positive reviews proving these techniques are changing peoples lives. This should be part of everyone's health related library. Well Done.
This book is nothing short of a miracle! Who knew I was breathing wrong? I found that these exercises not only helped with stress, but I've become more mindful of when I'm holding my breath - which creates stress. I'm loving how I feel and I will use the steps I learned in this book for the rest of my life.
Dr. Belisa Vranich’s book “Breathe” is incredible! I consider her my life coach from afar. This book is not just about learning how to breathe, it is a journey into learning how to live. It is a program destined to provide you more energy, rest, and zest in your life. Thank you, Dr. Vranich!!
For the review: BREATHE by Belisa Vranich changed the way I breathe and I reference something from this book every day. I learned a lot in this book about how to actually inhale and exhale properly, about what kind of a breather I am (horizontal), and it included some great exercises to help strengthen your diaphragm. However, this book is not meant for an eBook. The worksheets in the back to track your 14 days progress are helpful but really need to be printed for maximum effect. I do not recommend purchasing the eBook version but am buying a paperback for myself. The style of this book is very conversational, like a breathing coach sitting in the car with you and sometimes getting distracted by squirrels. But if you are looking for some good advice and knowledge and exercises, this might be a good selection for you.
I received an ARC of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
