I liked the first book in the series, but it really has started getting stale. Unfortunately, I just don't think it will grab my students attention.
I read this book ages ago and loved it. It is a great story. I did order it for my library at the time.
My daughter didn't really connect with this one and ultimately I finished it alone, instead of reading it to her. I thought it was very cute and I'm sure it would definitely appeal to lots of kids, it just wasn't for my daughter.
Jen Calonita always delivers such fun books! Gilly is a great main character. She has her flaws, but she's loyal and fierce. I love her as a character for young girl readers. She is also accompanied by great friends that share the spotlight in this series. As fans of the series love, this book is full of humor and twists. Readers will delight in both the familiar aspects of characters and fairy tales and in the new twists the author brings.
I loved this book! The full review will be posted soon at kaitgoodwin.com/books! Thank you very much for this wonderful opportunity to connect books to their readers!
This third outing to Fairy Tale Reform School includes another evil character (Rumpelstiltskin) to vanquish, friendships and family relationships to navigate, and a lot of fun fairy tale references. I like that Gilly actually grows and matures over the course of the book. Great literature? No. But definitely a worthy addition to this popular middle grade series.
This was such a fun addition to a marvelous series for middle graders who love fractured fairy tales. I like that this one focused on the main character's relationship with her sister and her thoughts about her own future. I plan to catch up on the last book in the series very soon! I think this would be a great addition to school or classroom libraries in addition to public libraries.
*NOTE: This a review of the entire series.*
Even though I'm 27, every now and then I like to read a middle-grade novel. There's something magical about a good middle-grade book. I love getting swept up in a story of good versus evil, where the good guy always wins in the end. It just leaves you with a warm and cozy feeling. I was looking through the books on my Kindle and saw that I owned all of the Fairy Tale Reform School series, and decided to binge read it. I loved it. I flew through the entire series in less than a week.
I think the FTRS series is one of the best middle-grade series I've read recently. It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, if Harry Potter had fairy tale creatures in it. There are many similarities, such as a constant change of professors, moving hallways, and a school setting. However, FTRS series isn't a Harry Potter copycat. It takes those tropes, and turns them into something completely unique and fun to read about. I loved trying to figure out how the kids were going to solve their problems. Just when I thought the books were getting predictable, it would take a completely different. route and surprise me all over again.
At first, I thought the series should have ended after the second book. I thought that there was no way the author could keep the series interesting without jumping the shark after the way book two ended, but I was completely wrong. She shocked me with how well she continued the story with the addition of Rumplestiltskin and the Stiltskin Squad. It kept things fresh, and got me re-interested in the storyline all over again. The very subtle political references had me cracking up laughing. My only complaint is that books three and four were a bit slow at times, but I think that's because the reader is introduced to so many new characters and plot mechanics. Everything changes, and with that comes a lot of world building.
I loved the FTRS series so much. It's one of my favorite middle-grade series I've ever read. Possibly one of my favorite series in general. I thought Switched was the last book in the series because it's the last book shown on Goodreads, but I hope it isn't. Switched left a lot of unanswered questions. I hope the author writes at least one more book in the series so we can get answers. I am looking forward to the spin-off series, Royal Academy, which comes out in late 2018. I can't wait to immerse myself back into this world, and hopefully see some more of my favorite characters. I recommend this series for anyone who wants to read a great middle-grade series with some fun fairy tale and fantasy elements.
Another exciting adventure to Gilly and friends! This time they go on a quest, during the course of which they all stretch their preconceived notions of what they (and their friends) are capable of achieving... and of overcoming. Some of the lessons learned are similar to those in the previous book, namely we all have the potential to be a hero (or a villain), depending on the choices we make. We can't achieve our goals alone, however, and need to rely on others and trust in their strengths... and their loyalty.
New challenges, new mythical beings, and new fairy tale characters all bring fresh elements into the mix, creating a charming, fun, colorful, and magical tale!
I received a copy of this book from Sourcebooks Jabberwocky via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This read is such a great one for young readers. My daughter read this one and loved it. She is eager to read more in the series now as well.
We follow Gillian on a quest to help her sister out. Rumor has it that things are changing and there is a new person in charge at the FTRS. Gillian does not attend this school anymore because she has been sent to a school where she learns all about feet. Gross!
Gillian hers rumors that things are going crazy at the FTRS and knows that she has to get in there and help her sister Anna out. Anna has been put in there because of some of the trouble she got into with her new friends Hansel and Gretel. Gilliam has to do some bad stuff to be thrown back in the FTRS school though.
Will these sisters be able to escape the FTRS? You need to read this one to find out. This was a fun read that my daughter and I both loved. Thanks for a great read Jen Calonita!
Love this whole series! Putting it in my classroom so my students will enjoy too
The story is about our main characters challenged she must face. With a quick wit and a straight forwarded attitude. Tricked is a twist on fairy tale stories. I think the book is enjoyable but it lacks the magical adventure I was expecting.
Tricked is the 3rd book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series. It is an exciting, whimsical, fun, and adventured filled book. All of your Grimm fairy tale characters are here.
Gilly Cobbler and her friends live in the village of Enchantasia. The village sounds like such a charming place to live.
Fairy Tale Reform School is where the “bad” children are sent when they need a little “tough love” to improve their bad, disrespectful behavior.
After Gilly completes her time at FTRS, she is bored attending Jack of All Trade School. She misses FTRS and all the friends she made there. Word is spreading that Rumplestiltskin has taken over FTRS as Headmaster and things are changing – dramatically.
Gilly's little sister, Anna, is hanging around with Hansel and Gretel who are really, really bad children, stealing candy, robbing candy carts.
When Rumplestiltskin takes over FTRS, all attempts at “reform” seem to be abandoned.
Gilly's little sister, Anna, gets sentenced to FTRS and it's up to Gilly and her friends to get themselves sent back to FTRS to out-trick the master trickster. They face the biggest challenge and adventure of their lives.
I enjoyed the book very much. It is family oriented and delivers a message of the value of friendship, unity and trust. It also delivers a message of self-worth and self-discovery.
This is an excellent book for Middle School age children (9-13).
I received this arc from Netgalley for an honest review.
I really love Jen Clonita's teen books so I was thrilled to get this arc. Unfortunately, I had not read the two previous books so I was a bit in the dark. What I can gather is that this series is fun, hilarious and an adventure all the way through.
After completing her time at FTRS Gilly Cobble finds herself missing all her friends and getting bored with attending Jack of All Trade School. Word has started spreading that since becoming headmaster at FTRS, Rumplestiltskin has started dramatically changing how the school is run. Gilly's little sister Anna finds herself sent to FTRS and it's up to Gilly along with her friends to get sent back. Now face to face with the trickster himself the gang faces their biggest challenge yet.
I continue to enjoy this series. A spunky and flawed heroine and evil (kinda of) villians. Focuses alot on power of friendship.

Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Jabberwocky for allowing me to read and review this ARC.
Tricked is the third book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series by Jen Calonita. The Previous books are Flunked and Charmed. To get a full understanding of the characters and the world, I would highly recommend reading this series in order. Newcomers might still enjoy some of the character development and all of the action, but I think they would not be able to enjoy the story fully without already having read the other books.
Things are changing at Fairy Tale Reform School. At least, that's what Gilly's heard through the Enchantasia rumor mill. Word is, notorious trickster Rumpelstiltskin has taken over management from Headmistress Flora, and he's locked down the school tighter than the Pied Piper's pants. Not that this news concerns Gilly. She's been released from FTRS and is now suffering through attending Jack of All Trades School, where she gets to learn about different kinds of shoe leather and ways to measure feet. Truly riveting stuff. But when Gilly's little sister Anna gets whisked off to FTRS thanks to her trouble-making new friends, Hansel and Gretel, Gilly knows she's got to get Anna out of there. There's only one thing to do; make some serious trouble and get thrown back into FTRS. It's time to out-trick a trickster.
Tricked is a continuation of Gilly's adventures in a fairy tale world. Life after FTRS is hard for those that have found friendship and themselves on school grounds. Things are changing fast, and not necessarily for the better. I like that while some of the basics remain the same, the adventures, characters, and relationships continue to change and grow. Gilly and her motley crew of friends have quite the challenge, outwitting Rumpelstiltskin is never easy, but I like that friendship and being honorable come through as more important than winning. Gilly grows significantly during this book, and I think her growth, and that of her companions, is well paced and relatable to readers. I would have liked more of the story from Anna's side, or had a chance to see more of her story, but I am fairly certain that she has a major role to play in further installments. I like that there was a solid conclusion to this particular adventure, but openings fort he story to continue on.
Tricked is another fun and enjoyable read from Calonita. Fans of the author, and the series, will greatly enjoy the read. This series is holding stead in quality, and I think it still has plenty of life in it for further books, and I look forward to seeing what will happen next.
