I am a HUGE Jane Austen nerd! I read this cute Manga version of Sense and Sensibility just a week before going to see a play based on the same book. What a fun way to jump back into this Austen story!
This book is so beautiful! My favorite Jane Austen book is Pride and Prejudice, yet Sense and Sensibility is probably my second favorite. The art is amazing as always, along with the story and the characters. They do a great job turning the book into manga. I can't wait to buy this and have it in my collection. Everyone that enjoys classics and Jane Austen should do so as well!
*A un-edited electronic proof copy of this manga was received for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This adaptation follows Marianne and her sister Elinor as they experience love, and the threat of losing it, in a world where a persons money and social status plays a huge part.
This is yet another beautiful adaptation from this collection, a story I have long loved was brought to life for me again, accompanied by brilliant artwork helping to further capture every emotion. I adore Jane Austen’s classic novel, and this adaption captures the essence of it.
Focusing on the adaptation and art within this manga, the plot flowed throughout and the pace was good. Although it is inevitable that the story would need to be condensed to fit into this adaptation, it was done in such a way that nothing felt missed out. I loved the artwork, for me each image conveyed depth and feeling, in a way which can’t always be conveyed by the written word alone.
Overall I really enjoyed this adaptation, it gave me a chance to revisit a favourite novel in a different form. If you like classic literature or are looking for a fresh spin on a classic you might just love this.
The team at Udon has done it again! The pure artistic vision in this Manga Classic of Jane Austen's timeless Sense and Sensibility will capture readers from the very start. I've read the original book before, but that was once upon a time and I could hardly remember the details. Yet, I'm so happy to have rediscovered this treasure through the artistry of this manga and relive so many joyous moments as if I was reading the story for the very first time.
As an absolute Jane Austen fanatic, I was so excited to download this book. While obviously much effort went in to its making, I found it hard to enjoy. I could barely get though the first part of this manga style rendition of one of my favorite books. The dialogue felt like it was taken straight from the 2008 movie adaptation. I love that movie, but if I wanted to watch the movie I would watch the movie, The Dashwood girl’s characters also looked to much alike that I could not tell them apart. In general, the story moved along at a jarring pace. Overall, it just was not for me. However, I could see this being a great opportunity to attract a different audience to the wonderful world of Austen, so for that I give it a thumbs up.
As usual, I was blown away by the quality of the art in this book!! I've become a pretty big fan of the Manga Classics and this one was as good as ever.
I loved this version of Sense and Sensability! It was a quick read and the art was beautiful. I really enjoyed the dialogue and the rendition of the characters.
I love reading manga and watching anime.. So when I saw a classic adapted into a manga I got excited.. Some scenes were taken/revised and that is very much understandable and it is still a fine adaptaion.. Good job if you ask me!
I loved this adaptation of Jane Austen's classic. I felt it really selected many of the most important plot points that were needed in the story and illustrated it well. Each character's personality came through clearly and looked unique enough that you weren't confused who was who. This was a fun read that would be a great way to introduce people to Jane Austen's work.
The story stays mostly true to the book which I consider one of the most important parts of a manga retelling. Yes some things are skipped over or told in a slightly different way but I understand why. The artwork is classic manga style and for the most part I enjoyed. However I think the men could have been a touch more handsome in this story. A great adaptation of Austen’s work.
Sense and Sensibility was the second Austen book that I ever read. I picked it up after Pride and Prejudice, in my high school years, thinking it would be similar. I quickly learned that while Jane Austen has a distinct "voice", each of her stories is unique and engaging in completely different ways.
Probably, one of my favorites of her works, Sense and Sensibility, is a delightful read that evokes many emotions. I will say that, the manga edition was an incredibly enjoyable version of the story and I'm glad to have read it.
Although, this is one, that I believe everyone should read the original at least once.
Po Tse's artwork is so amazing! Seeing classic novel as a manga adaption fills my heart with joy. Marianne and Elinor are so well portrayed and emotions were so detailed that you could easily connect with the characters. Well done !
Maybe it is good for Manga lovers to get into classical literature, but I personally didn't enjoy it very much, the illustrations were to comical and too dramatic at the same time, as a huge fan of Jane Austen's works I just couldn't aprecciate it
I love these Manga retellings of famous classics.
This one is no exception! I loved the artwork, and the story is well told and easy to follow.
This is absolutely one of my favorite classics so I was really excited to sit down and read this. I thought it stuck true to the characters and although cut things it still held up well considering the format. It's always interesting to see how someone else sees a character and interprets their moods.
Sometimes the word choices bothered me as did the more as drastic characteristics of the antagonists. I understand why it was done for the format it was told in. Otherwise I think it's a fun read.
I was really excited to get approved for an ARC of this book on Net Galley. Being a huge manga reader, I instantly fell in love with the concept of adapting classic western novels in a manga format.
Having never actually read Sense & Sensibility (the novel), I can't comment on how accurate the adaptation is, but I liked this manga quite a lot. Visuals bring the characters to life, and the girly art fits Austen's writing style well. I don't know why but Marianne's character reminded me of Rose of Versailles (in terms of illustration). The dialogues were taken from the book so there's no watering down of Jane Austen's language to make it accessible to modern readers. However, since she's a pretty great writer, that hardly matters.
The story itself was detailed with the classic misunderstandings and plot twists, but well done with Austen's signature observation of Regency English society. I think those in school that are trying to get into classics would enjoy this manga, as would anyone wanting a quick re-read (but not actually having time to read the novel).
Pros:
1. Visual format
2. Good art- works well for the story
3. Detailed enough (312 pages, I think- that's a lot longer than it sounds)
4. Most major points were well-adapted (I assume)
Cons:
1. The timeline jumps- I'm assuming this would come across much better in a novel. This book had quite a few of those: 'three months later', 'two weeks later', 'one week later'.
Overall, a pretty good, breezy read. I loved seeing Jane Austen's work in a manga format and highly recommend it.
BEAUTIFUL! Wow, absolutely beautifully drawn! I am in love! Thank you for the opportunity to read for a fair review!
A perfect way to see your favourite classic story illustrated if you ever wanted to picture it in your head more clearly. Amazing!
Fun read! Sense and Sensibility is my favorite Austen novel, and I enjoyed experiencing the story in a new way. I would have loved reading this when I was younger because it's so much lighter than the original. The art is quite sweet and youthful. I look forward to trying more in this series.
I absolutely adored this book! The artwork was beautiful and the story was abridged well-enough to give students the gist of the work without over complicating the plot for their first encounter with a story. I look forward to using this edition in my classroom.
