I was auto-approved by the publisher Udon Entertainment through NetGalley to review this title.
I have only read the original Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen once, but have watched television productions throughout the years.
I’m still not sure about this one. I found the artwork pretty, but also comical. I understand that Austen’s works possess a certain amount of comical commentary of social customs; however, with respect to the artwork it felt like it was distracting the reader from the actual story.
Overall, I might be slightly biased and have extremely high expectations when it comes to Austen’s works, but I still find it’s an entertaining read.
I obtained a free copy via Netgalley for a true and honest review!
I found this such fun read! I don't really read magna comics but I really enjoyed this.
This is the second Manga Classic I have reviewed. I was not disappointing in Sense and Sensibility. It was such and enjoyable read to see the story of the Dashwood family in manga form. It really does break down the original novel into smaller more detailed pieces while maintaining the language and integrity of the original novel.
It has been nearly ten years since I first read Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. There is something about Jane Austen's characters that feel so relevant in the modern age. In manga classic's version of Sense and Sensibility, the characters of Marianne and Elinor Dashwood are brought to life in Regency era England. When the Dashwoods' father dies, Marianne, Elinor and their mother are left vulnerable to the world without prospects. Even though Marianne and Elinor's half-brother, John, promised to take care of them, his wife Fanny has other ideas. Suddenly, the Dashwoods find themselves without prospects. But, in Jane Austen's world, love always prevails. A story of love and heartbreak, and the bond of sisterhood, Sense and Sensibility is one of Jane Austen's masterpiece.
Manga classics' version of Sense and Sensibility follows the original plotline of the novel with ease. The designs of the characters themselves are reflections of their personalities. For instance, Elinor's hair is straight and tamed, Marianne's is wild and curly. Even silly characters such as Mrs. Jennings is portrayed through her expressive facial reactions. All in all, this is an excellent adaptation of the novel. For those who are intimidated by the antiquity of Jane Austen's novels, please give this one a try. Or if you have read all of Jane Austen's novels and desperately wish for more Regency drama, this adaptation is right for you!

Netgalley #15
Many thanks go to UDON and Netgalley for the free copy of this Manga version of Jane Austen’s classic for my unbiased opinion. This is probably my favorite Austen novel, so I’m very excited to see how it translates. And translate it certainly did! What beautiful illustrations. I feel there may have been a slight cinematic influence as well. And all the famous quotes were included, which was a requirement. I think this format is an excellent way for the YA crowd to enjoy classic literature. Definitely better than Cliff’s Notes. I plan on collecting more of these titles; they are simply delightful.
Thanks to NetGalley and UDON Entertainment for the opportunity to read and review Manga Classics! Manga Classics include Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, which is true to the original classic with added cliffhangers to keep manga readers interested and eye-catching illustrations. After the story ends, the details of adaptation from classic literature to manga lets us see into the transformation. Each story in this collection follows these same guidelines! Impressive artwork and transformation!
Manga Classics also include The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (the only color is the scarlet letter A, which makes striking illustrations!), Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven. The Cask of Amontillado, The Masque of the Red death and The Fall of the House of Usher; Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and many more!
5 stars for books that make classics accessible and understandable to every reader!
Unable to read - Adobe's been giving me issues, so I can't open this file on my computer.
This is a beautiful re-telling of Jane Austen's first novel. The artist truly captured the exquisite regency style of that era in the costumes, architecture and scenery. The art alone is worth owning the manga.
The story was told in a much more simplistic way than Austen's novel but did not deviate themes in a way that takes any emotion or understanding away from the reader. I would definitely recommend this version for young ladies who haven't had the pleasure of reading Austen's work or didn't quite understand it. The art helps bring understanding on a way sometimes words alone can't.
This story is about love, sacrifice and finding oneself. Marianne is a bunny naive girl who quickly learns why she should guard her heart but rarely practices what she learns always turning to her sister with her problems. Elinor is her reserved and much more level headed older sister who is always protecting everyone except herself. They are surrounded by jaw dropping events and secrets coming to light at every turn not knowing who to trust except each other. Will they come through each ordeal with strength or will they lose themselves to weighing out what sense and sensibility is when it is staring them in the face?
This book was given to me by NetGalley and Udon Entertainment in exchange for a fair and honest review,
5 stars.
Sense and Sensibility, in this format, is unique and makes the experience of reading a strictly classic novel fun and accessible for younger readers who may feel intimidated by the close text of a regularly formatted classic paperback. For older readers who are already familiar with this novel, the illustrations add an additional element of excitement that might otherwise have been missing in other editions. The illustrations make reading this novel newly invigorating, and for visual learners like myself, it’s a great way to give the reader a scene or character to focus on in detail.
A great book, an english classic in an entire new approach, japonese manga. Very good. The original plot and scenes are respected.
What can I say? Jane Austen and manga, you really can't go wrong. I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I really enjoyed the artwork. The artwork really adds to the classic story and made me more invested in the tale. I have read this book multiple times and it was simply wonderful. I will definitely be buying a hard copy!
This is a wonderful adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. It hits on all the major plot points and paints a reading of Austen's story that anyone can read and enjoy. The art is beautiful and stunning. It's a really fun version of a great story.
I'm a fan of manga classics and now I've ventured into sweet Sense and Sensibility which tells the story of Elinor and Marianne, two sisters who were left homeless after their father's death. After facing problems in the house with their sister-in-law, their mother decides to move to a small cottage and end up living on the favors of friends and neighbors. Both fall in love and it is the reaction of each one that generates the title of this beautiful Jane Austen’s book and that we can accompany and twist for them. What is most interesting is to notice how Jane Austen likes to present beautiful, young and seductive men as opposed to serious and honorable men and how women react to them. The initial presentation is always captivating and important to understand the development of the story.
The adaptation was very faithful to the original work showing with delicate graphics, in many fun moments the facial expressions and feelings of the characters, the characterizations were very marked. The only detail that I did not like was the final development for me. It lacked the overflow of typical emotions of the writer, I found the cuts a bit abrupt as if the draftsman was in a hurry to finish the sleeve, so much that I had to resort to the film and the book to remember if the scene had been cut so abruptly and without emotion. A pity for an adaptation that I liked a lot.

Udon Entertainment and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility. I was under no obligation to review this publication and my opinion is freely given.
Despite a deathbed utterance by their father to his inheritor, their half brother, Marianne and Elinor Dashwood are given a minimal amount of income. Forced to move with their mother to less comfortable surroundings, the sisters soon find themselves isolated from their former lives. Both face difficulties in the area of romance, so will their dreams ever become a reality? Can Marianne and Elinor find true happiness?
This adaptation of Jane Austen's classic story does take some liberties, but the artwork and dialogue captures the essence of Sense and Sensibility. As the classic is what I would consider an early precursor to the modern romance novel, I had certain expectations of the Manga. I was not disappointed, especially since the author was able to convey both the angst and the love sick qualities of the two sisters. I was surprised that Manga style suited Sense and Sensibility to such a high extent, as I am not usually a fan of the genre. However, the facial expressions are drawn in such a way that the graphic novel captures the overall feeling of the original. I would not hesitate to recommend Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility to readers, especially to those who may shy away from the traditional classic telling of this story.
I think I've yet to encounter one of Udon Entertainment's Manga Classics that I do not enjoy. Beautiful art as always that fits the story. I hope these illustrations get more kids to read those wonderful classics because they really deserve to be read. The manga is perfect for people who have a hard time reading the original because they don't enjoy reading or aren't that good with the english language but also for people who've read the original and just want to see another take on the story.
I've only read "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin and I've really enjoyed that, but I've never read any other works by her and I never really had an interest to do so. As any other manga classic, it helped me become interested in something I would never pick up and enjoying it at the same time. I'm glad I picked this up.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of Jane Austen in manga form. Her novels fit the romantic manga style to a T, complete with beautiful scenery, gorgeous dresses, and faces full of expression.
Out of all the Manga Classics, Austen stories are definitely my favorite.
Really liked this book was excited to be ably to see the pictures with the story
