I am constantly amazed by Stacy King and Po Tse and the work they put into adapting classic novels into manga. You can really see dedication and devotion they put towards their works – every adaptation I’ve read still carried the feel of the original novel, with the added beauty of artwork to support it. It truly makes for quite an experience, regardless of if you’ve previously read the original story.
What I love the most about Manga Classics is how approachable they make the classics. I hope that more people feel encourage to read these stories thanks to the work being done here. I can honestly say that while I have read many classics, I haven’t read nearly as many as I’d like. Reading them in manga form (and thus usually a shorter experience) helps me to bridge the gap and read some of the novels I haven’t had a chance to get to yet. It’s really quite wonderful.
Sense and Sensibility is no exception; the drawings are absolutely stunning, and I still cannot believe how much Stacy King was able to condense without losing any sense of the story. There’s even an addendum in the end, apologizing for having to cut so much of Colonel Brandon’s dialogue – but the truth is I’m not sure that apology was necessary. Yes, there was some dialogue cut, as she stated, but we still get an accurate sense of his character without those lines.
I honestly believe that Sense and Sensibility may be my favorite Manga Classic to date. It’s so beautiful and immersive. I actually found myself reading it all in one sitting! I do hope that eventually the rest of Jane Austen’s works get adapted, as well as many more classics! I can’t wait to read them all.
Sense & Sensibility is one of my favorite classic novels. What a joy to experience it in an entirely new way! The adaptation was very true to the source material, and I loved the artwork. I feel like the Manga Classics series would be a great way to introduce reluctant readers to the classics, because it's a COMIC BOOK! Who can say no to a comic book? At the same time, reading this abridged and comic version would make a good base to build on so if one later chose to read the full novel, it would be easier to understand and more palatable. I applaud this ingenious endeavor and look forward to reading more in the series.
The retelling is OK, but the mixture with manga seemed to clash with the time period.
Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors. I read Sense and sensibility long ago but I am well familiar with it. I generally do not object on reading or watching different versions or remakes a story because all of them offer an unique perspective that one can truly enjoy. In this case, I have to say I did not like this one much. Starting by the cover, I found it containing to much pink and soft faces for my liking, maybe done on purpose trying to appeal an specific type of reader (girls and teenagers in general), it was difficult to know who is who and how everyone is related; Anne and Lucy Steel for example, they are introduced together and only later you know which one is Anne and which one is Lucy, the children appear all together in the same scene and it makes everything more confusing, you cannot understand the little accident that makes one of them cry..I also found some inconsistencies on the plot that I could not possibly track back on the story itself (mentions of Mr. F and Mr W when they visit Barton Rouge...I know what that is, I even remember that from the Ang Lee's movie but they are not mentioned previously on this novel so one have to assume what they actually mean...)... I also found one spelling mistake (truely...instead of truly) although I cannot be sure if that was intentional for some reason (maybe that was the actual spelling on Jane Auste's times?). Anyway, I really enjoyed the final marriage proposal, that always make me smile with pleasure and I really liked how that was portrayed, exactly how I always imagined it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment to allow me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

I am really glad to have the Manga Classics series. There are man y classics that I find boring and this visual representation helps me stay attentive. I am not a fan of Jane Austin and I had a problem just getting through the parody Price and Prejudice and Zombies.
Luckily, I didn't have to slog through Sense and Sensibility. (I can hear all the Austen fans now as hey alternatively weep and yell about my distaste for these books). The images and format makes it easy to comprehend what is going on and moves the plot along pretty quickly. That being said, about half way through, I still got bored. snobbery, classism, and the same romance troupes get old, very quickly for me. Luckily, the drawings were so beautiful and gave me a better visual than came from reading the word n my own, I was able to finish (and yes everything ended as I thought it would).
Wow. This book was filled with intense emotion and you really could feel the character’s emotions. I loved seeing how these two totally different women lived their lives after their loss. When I read this book a long time ago I couldn’t really grasp everything. I enjoyed how this was a more modernized version of the story. I feel this book is great for students and for young readers who want to experience this story with an easier and quicker feel. The reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars is because I didn’t enjoy the artwork as much as a previous manga classic I read but it might just be my preference. This still was a great adaptation and I definitely recommend it to Jane Austen fans and/or manga lovers!
I actually enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. I was even upset when both men in the lives of the two sisters were being such 'users'. Even up to this day the challenges that these characters faced are what people are still experiencing. I believe that would be the term befitting them in the 21st century. I now understand why Jane Austen is one of the number one names that comes up when you look up the word 'literature'.
One again, Stacy King never fails to amaze me by her adaptations on Manga Classics. This is as close as I'll ever get to reading classic. Who knows, maybe I'll read the entire novel when I'm older.
This was a good adaptation of a classic. While I wasn't always keen on all the artwork it was still an enjoyable read.
I like manga and I lovee the movie, but I can't get through the book . But this manga is however lovely. It read fast and it was really nice. The artist and the writer both did an amazing job by giving this story yet another lovely adaption.
'Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility' by Jane Austen with adaptation by Stacy King and art by Po Tse is another great addition to the Manga Classics line.
The Dashwood's family fortunes are changed when their father suddenly dies. Sisters Elinor and Marianne live with their mother and are forced to move from their family home. Both find romance, Elinor with Edward Ferrars and Marianne with John Willoughby, but this being Jane Austen, you know there will be bumps along the road to a happy ending.
I have not read the original work (shame on me), but I have seen film adaptations. This adaptation seems very complete, and even covers ground that is not in the films. I've read a couple other adaptations by Stacy King, so I know she is typically very faithful to the original. The art by Po Tse is very much in a manga style. These are great gateway mangas for fans of literature, and great gateways to literature for manga fans. It seems like a win-win to me.
I received a review copy of this manga from UDON Entertainment, Morpheus Studios, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
I've been on a mission to get ahold of these Manga Classics and this book was no different. I loved the art style. There isn't much I can say but pick up this book if you love Jane Austen and graphic novels you'll love this as much as I did!
This manga illustrates Jane Austen's novel with unexptected depth and precision, the art is excellent and I can only recommend it, and I think even Jane Austen would be pleased with the outcome
I enjoyed reading this book but it tool me a while to get into it. I thought it was great in manga form.
I loved this manga adaptation of Jane Austen's classic story! The manga follows the original story pretty closely, and the artwork is beautiful.
There's a lot of crying in this book! I mean, I suppose there's a lot of crying in the original story too, but seeing almost all the characters constantly collapsing into violent tears, hysterics, and/or fits of depression was over-the-top dramatic. Then again, Marianne Dashwood is the epitome of drama! haha!
The artwork is really lovely, and I liked seeing all the pretty costumes of the ladies. The villains and nasty people, like Lucy Steele, have ugly grotesque expressions sometimes that just make you hate them. I love the way the artwork really enhances the characters!
I think it's brilliant how the story is condensed into manga format without losing the integrity and feeling of the original story. I enjoyed revisiting this story, and loved reading this manga!

When their father dies, the Dashwood sisters and their mother are displaced by their half-brother, John Dashwood. Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret Dashwood move to a relative's house in the country along with their mother. Marianne meets the dashing Willoughby and falls in love almost immediately, despite Elinor's warnings to be cautious. Marianne wears her heart on her sleeve, so when Willoughby's secrets are revealed, she is publicly humiliated. Elinor also has a romantic interest, though she is more sensible in the way she hides it. This story a study in sense and sensibility, with characters displaying both traits.
This is my least favourite Jane Austen novel. I love her other books so much, but I just couldn't get into this one. Likewise, I wasn't as crazy about this graphic novel.
The story was told very well. It is more straightforward than the novel, especially since it is able to demonstrate what is happening through pictures. However, I found that a lot of the characters looked alike. Since there are many girls around the same age in the story, they ended up looking very much alike. Even the three sisters were difficult to distinguish between sometimes, though they had slightly different hairstyles.
Though this isn't my favourite graphic novel in the Manga Classics series, I would still recommend it for anyone looking for an introduction to the classics.

I must admit I have not read any Jane Austen's classics but I am lucky I have access to these beautiful classics in their manga form.
After reading "Jane Eyre" and "Pride and Prejudice" I decided to read "Sense and sensibility" by Jane Austen (with the art by Po Tse and story adapted by Stacy King. Manga produced by UDON Entertainment).
My rating:
⭐⭐⭐
This is the story of two main characters, the Dashwood sisters- Elinor and Marianne that are so different from each other yet share this amazingly strong and genuine friendship. They go through the heartbreaks but their bond just strengthens with the time. Both fall in love and have to learn the balance between sense and sensibility.
My thoughts:
I really enjoyed the artwork. Based on the reviews of other readers, each detail of the original story was well researched and presented.
In my opinion, so far, it's my least favourite classic manga. The plot wasn't my favourite but I enjoyed it neverless.
I am lucky not to live in the time when women were so dependend on their male guardians. Their life evolved around finding perfect husband.
I love these manga versions of classics. A lot more fun to read! I really enjoy escape the beautiful artwork to go along with the tale.
Another beautiful adaptation by Stacy King and Po Tse of the Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility. If you are looking for a manga version that is as close to the original novel as possible, then this is a must read. It follows the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they navigate the complexity of English society and their ever evolving love lives. All key points, plots, and relationships are included and wonderfully executed. If you are new to manga, but love a good Austen classic (or regency period historical fiction), then you should give this manga and the other manga classics in this collection a try!
I give it four stars. I enjoyed the drawings and I believe that it captured elements from the original story. I think it would the help younger generation get interested in classics and get them to explore/read the original version.
Sense and Sensibility has always been my least favorite Jane Austen but this made the story much more bearable.
