This was a sweet Cinderella retelling from the point of view of the fairy godmother, or at least her assistant. ;) This is heavy on the fairytale and light on the romance, but I'm a little forgiving of it because I did like Hayden and Lily a lot. I didn't feel like we got to know Sidney as well as I would have liked. But this was an interesting twist on how to tell the fairytale.

For in this tale, magic has been outlawed and any who practice it subject to being thrown in the dungeons. Hayden has been on the run helping Lily assist those she chooses, but mean evil knight Sidney (ok so he's not mean or evil really) has been attempting to catch Hayden under suspicion of being a mage. Of course Hayden is terrified by the prospects of being caught and what that would mean for Lily. But once Lily has chosen a target there's no way they'll move on until the job is complete. So helping Renee find her happily ever after with her prince is going to happen, meddling knight or no meddling knight.

I did enjoy the antics in this story, but I wanted a little more romance between Sidney and Hayden. I didn't mind that this keeps true to fairytale romance and doesn't have any sex between the characters, but I would have liked a little more connection rather than it seemingly coming out of nowhere. Still this made me smile and was a sweet, quick read.

I really really enjoyed the authors previous work and was excited to start this one.
Sadly it fell short for me, the story was too short and packed a little too much into it so it kept throwing me out of the story.

I adored Hayden - he's got a fairy in his pocket, and he helps her bring happiness to people who would otherwise go overlooked and continue suffering.

What is not to adore? Loved the voice of his character, very engaging.

Between dodging the stubborn knight and the odious nobles he's currently working for, helping his fairy get a woman to a ball is going to be more difficult than their missions usually are.

But: The only problem is that magic is illegal, and there's a certain stubborn, handsome knight determined to prove that Hayden deserves to be locked up.

Honestly. What a fabulous book!

Loved it from beginning to end. Awesome cast, wonderful writing.

Highly recommended.
