Another great story with lots of twists. Good to catch up with Pescoli and Alvarez again.
This is my second Lisa Jackson book and although it is part of a series I read it as a stand alone. This is the seventh book in the series and I also read the third book. I must say that I enjoyed this book much more that the first one of her that I picked up. I loved the characters and how they related to each other as well as how the story developed. After the first book that I read I didn't think I will read another Lisa Jackson again but this book has surely changed my mind. I look forward to reading all the other Lisa Jackson books in this series.
If you are into mysteries and thrillers you would not be disappointed.
My thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for the copy.
Not my favorite book in the series, but overall a good story from Lisa Jackson.
if you haven't read the series, I highly recommend you do before starting Expecting to Die, There is a lot of character backstory that carries over to get to this point.
Overall, I felt the story dragged at times and was just a little slow. As much as I usually adore these characters, I kind of disliked their attitudes in this book at times which made it a little frustrating to read.
This was not a horrible story by any means but I did feel as if it dragged somewhat, particularly in the middle. The story line was a bit exaggerated and at times the characters also seemed a bit exaggerated; like someone who is overacting in a movie. I did enjoy the story but the ending was not a complete surprise.
Fantastic instalment in the Pescoli / Alvarez series. The whole Bigfoot / Sasquatch story, provides a great backdrop to what is actually going on,
Lisa Jackson is another favorite author and Expecting TO Die did not disapoint. An Alvarez & Pescoli Novel, The story develops well with many colorful characters with roles in this story.well written & easyto understand.
Pescoli is now remarried to handsome hunk Santana and expecting a baby. The setting is in GrizzlyFall's Montana.
Her teenage daughter Bianca is at the "meeting place' in the woods where the guys chase the girls in a night game of hide & seek. A big huge harry beast chases her & she falls down the embankment into the creek & finds a body.
People start saying it's big foot and a lot more develops from there with the whole town. Then another girl goes missing and Pescoli is determined to solve this before the baby is borneShe and Alvarez won't give up to find who & whats at the bottom of all this.
Thank you to Lisa Jackson, her publisher & Netgalley who sent me the ARC in exchange for this review.
Expecting to Die by Lisa Jackson
To Die #7
Grizzly Falls, Montana seems to be a murder magnet. With more than one murder in the past that has been solved by Pescoli & Alvarez they are soon on the job again with a new body to find the murderer of. In this book Regan Pescoli is in her new home with Santana and very very pregnant. Alvarez is in a relationship that may or may not pan out. And, their job is to find the murderer of a female high school student found in the woods during a midnight game of hide and seek that may have included a Sasquatch. With all of the teens at the party potential suspects and obvious lies being told by most the hunt for the murderer is on. Before the end of the book a few more young women and a young man end up dead, a reality TV program begins filming, a kidnapping takes place, liars are thwarted and a baby is born.
I love books by this author but this one did not grab me like her previous ones have. I am guessing that since the copy I read was an ARC the final version will be tighter, repetition will be deleted and the read will be better. I found it less believable and harder to follow the threads of than previous books but still a good read. I came away wondering if perhaps Alvarez might end up with Cooper Blackwater in a future book rather than with the man she is currently in a relationship with. I wanted to know more about Kayan Rule and some others on the police force. I felt sorry for the dysfunctional teens and many of their families living in Grizzly Falls. And, I wondered what the future holds in store for the main and supporting characters of this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC. This is my honest review.
3.5 Stars
I enjoyed previous books in this series but this one failed to connect with me. The plot was quite slow to progress and just an over abundance of dead bodies to be believable. Too. many characters for me to get to grips with! Glad the baby has arrived though. Not the best book in the series but I would read another by the author. A good holiday read.Thank you Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads.
I have not kept up with this series, and that is clearly a mistake. A chilling novel about teens that will have your sleeping with your eyes open.
So nice to be back with Pescoli. She's one strong character as are all involved in this well thought out thriller. The controversy over big foot mirrors the climate of believing the unbelievable today. The path to the conclusion was winding and I was surprised at 'who-done-it'
Another great mystery involving Detective Regan Pescoli & Detective Selma Alvarez! Lisa Jackson has an on going series based on these two detectives. Pescoli is a snarky almost 40 year old pregnant detective that has great instincts & feelings. Alvarez is more by the book & is sometimes frustrated by her partner. You wouldn't think these two would work together but the writer has their strengths & weaknesses complimenting each other.
Lisa Jackson is one of my favorite authors. The familiar characteristics of her stories revolve around a strong plot, intriguing twists, well developed characters & a reason for murder. The supporting characters all lend believable to the plot & are the source of some miscommunication. In this case, Pescoli & Alvarez had to deal with a number of teenagers that were lying for one reason or another. Some had to do with the murder & some didn't. You also had parents stepping in to shield their kids from the police for one reason or another. I can always trust Lisa Jackson to deliver a mystery that keeps me involved from beginning to end!
Thank yoy NetGalley for the ARC of Expecting to Die by Lisa Jackson that I read and reviewed.
This is the first Lisa Jackson book I have read in a long time and I had a hard time getting into it because it has been forever since I have read a book in this series so I had no idea what was going on and I felt totally lost so this was my fault for reading a book in the middle of a series. I was hoping I could pick things up quickly but unfortunately I was not able too so I was at a loss throughout a good part of the book so I did not connect with it like I would have if I would have been a fan of the series.
As for the storyline I liked it overall but it was hard for me, as I said to follow the relationships and where everyone fit in the grand scheme of things and where the history all came from so that was a bit of a struggle.
Because I should not have read this book but I did like the plot I am giving Expecting to Die three out of five stars with a mental note not to read books that far in a series again.
Loved it! Everyone's lives are so tangled up together, you can't be sure who the killer is. Lots of juicy gossip, with a solid mystery to go with it. And, did I mention some Bigfoot fun thrown in there too? Another great installment of the Regan Pescoli series.
When I started reading Expecting to Die, I was a bit taken aback.
First, it took me a bit to groove into the relationship between Alvarez & Piscoli. When I finally did, I really like them.
Second, I was a bit dismayed by the – ahem – suspect in our mystery.
However, once the reality show rolls into town and the drama ratchets up, I was in – completely and totally enthralled. The book was action-packed, suspenseful, and I was dying to know what was going on. Some of my suspicions were accurate, but some were completely off base.
A really enjoyable thriller once it gets going!

Pescoli and Alvarez are back in Expecting to Die, the 7th installment in Lisa Jackson’s To Die series.
Detective Regan Pescoli is counting the days until her maternity leave. Exhausted and emotional, the last thing she needs is another suspected serial killer. Especially when her daughter, Bianca, is swept up in the media storm. Another body is found…and another. As the nightmare strikes closer to home, Pescoli races to find who’s responsible for the bodies popping up all over town.
It has been 2½ years since I read book six of this series, so some details of previous books were fuzzy. However, that did not stop me from enjoying Expecting to Die. Jackson does a good job of giving details about past events (without a full rehash) to make reading this book feel like reading a stand-alone.
The mystery here was interesting, but there were way too many characters involved. I found myself constantly wondering how one character was connected to the story and wishing I had been taking notes. Some of the enjoyment in trying to figure out who was behind the killings was lost in my confusion among characters. However, that didn’t stop me from trying to guess who the killer was. And I was wrong every time! Jackson does a good job of building mystery and keeping readers guessing (this reader anyway), but I felt the ending was rushed. When I finished the book I wished Jackson had left out some of the characters, some of the background story in order to really focus on closing out this mystery with a bang. Yes, I was surprised, but I wanted a little bit more.
Will the series continue? Jackson has certainly left it open for at least one more book, which I would definitely like to see. A book that would wrap up the personal lives of Pescoli and Alvarez and give this reader closure. Plus, I do love a good mystery and the town of Grizzly Falls is full of mystery.
If you want a mystery solved by some kick-ass female detectives, give Jackson’s To Die series a try.
For such a small town, there are a disproportionate number of serial killers. The characters are becoming dull, also. The early books in this series are great. The last few? Not so much.
As always our favorite Montana detectives Pescoli and Alvarez are deep in mystery as death once again hits their town. This time a very pregnant Pescoli is dealing with a mystery that affects her own daughter Bianca. Torn between the job, family, soon to arrive baby her hands are full. Once again Jackson does a fantastic job of bringing to life the characters that we've fallen in love with in the To Die series. Her characters, whose lives become ours, and we worry about their town, the people, and the women who some how always find the bad guy but not without some danger to themselves.
I liked this book. It was well written and I would probably still purchase it. I did not think it was as good as the rest of the series, didn't seem to have as much suspense/action in it to me. I love the author and have read everything she has written, I look forward to next in the series and will purchase that one.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was interesting and the twists and turns in the plot kept me engaged right through to the end of the book. I'm looking forward to the next instalment!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of Expecting To Die, the seventh Pescoli and Alvarez police procedural set in Grizzly Falls, Montana.
A group of teenagers meet in the woods at night to do whatever teenagers do and Bianca Pescoli gets separated from her friends and is chased through the woods by a big, hairy, smelly beast till she reaches the creek and literally stumbles over a dead body. Her mother, Detective Regan Pescoli doubts that it was Bigfoot who chased her but the local enthusiasts beg to differ, so while Pescoli senior, at 35 weeks pregnant, is busy investigating the death of Destiny Montclare Pescoli junior is starting her reality tv career by re-enacting her flight through the woods.
I wasn't overly impressed by the previous novel in the series, Deserves To Die, but I'm happy to report that Expecting To Die is a welcome return to form. Grizzly Falls is an extremely dangerous place to live so Pescoli and Alvarez are very experienced homicide detectives but Destiny's death and the others that follow have them initially stumped because they are dealing with teenagers who lie without compunction, take omertá to a whole new level and when all else fails hide behind their parents' desire to protect them. Watching Pescoli and Alvarez jump through hoops to get any kind of information makes for a very good read and I would never have guessed the ending in a million years.
With Bianca involved from the start this is very much a Pescoli novel (the author concentrates on one or the other's private life in each novel). She is 35 weeks pregnant and feeling it so she's grumpy and not at all pleased at Bianca's involvement in the reality tv series. Again, what happens with this is unexpected and very interesting.
Expecting To Die held my interest from start to finish with its twisty plot, likeable protagonists and good pacing. I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.
