I found that the story was at times hard to follow as it's set in a different world than we're used too but I still enjoyed reading about it and all the characters as well as thier abilities. I also enjoyed reading about the different relationships (friendships & romantic) as well. One other problem I had was that, at the beginning of each chapter sometimes it would take time to realize who was speaking. All in all, this was an intresting story to read about.
It had been two weeks since Anna had woken up. The first day Anna had woken up the first day she knew right away something was wrong. Anna could still feel the raw burning from the bindings that had been on her wrists and the knot of anxiety in Anna’s chest. Now Anna hid in the woods. It had took the doctors nine weeks to convince Anna that her mom was dead. It had been a year instead of days ago. Anna had been missing for a year. Now Anna was looking for someone who had stolen her memories. And cut the bindings from Anna when she fell asleep. Anna now lived with her Uncle Jimmy and her cousin Brook. Anna had insisted on going to the private school- Night Fall- that Brook attended. The only thing Anna could remember was the school with the intertwining N and H. Brook had known nothing about Anna or Anna about Brook. But when Brook had found Anna then Brook’s father Jimmy came down and he broke into tears when he grabbed Anna. Anna said her mom was dead and she had lost a year and there had to be an explanation. Then Brook said sometime the truth is better left in the dark. When Brook and Anna go to Night Fall Anna saw the Academy was actually a castle. The Great Hall was is the central mingling place for students. The students had meals in The Great Hall , study there, and meet with peer groups for their classes. Everyone started back to their dorms after dinner but somehow Anna lost Brook in the crowd and bumped into a guy. He offered to help Anna get back to her dorm and his name was Blake. The school has a lot of students who have powers. There is also a war in the works/ Anna seems to be pulled to Blake but Cade likes Anna. Anna knows something is going on in the school and she thinks her friends know but won’t or haven’t told her yet/ Then mages are shown with royals and their princes and all and where they belonged.
I enjoyed this story but I got confused at times. But it didn’t stop me from reading this or enjoying this book. It did seem odd Anna got right into an elite private school but once again not important enough to cause any problems for me just wondered about it. I did also feel there were too many characters but as I said that too didn’t stop me just had to use my mind a little more not such a bad thing. I liked the fast pace and all Anna learns. I hope her and Blake do end up together. This had : drama, magic, different friendships, murder, weird events, a castle, a lost year, mages, princes, mystery. And so much more. I like the characters a lot and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.
The book begins with Anna witnessing the murder of her mother, that is the last memory she has for the next year, when she is taken in by her uncle and sent to the same private school as her cousin. Here, she learns that her past, her mother's past are not what she believed. She comes from an ancient people, known as Mages, who have special powers and, as she struggles to fit in and solve the mystery of her mother's death, her power's begin to emerge. With the help of mysterious and dark Blake, she slowly finds her way and what she needs to do next.
I found Eternal Night to be a compelling story and was immediately drawn into the mystery of who murdered Anna's mother. However, I felt that that mystery was dropped during the middle section, but returned near the end. I also found that there were huge chunks of time were skipped in the book to try and speed up the story line, but it made it feel like major parts of the story were being missed.
Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 and look forward to reading the sequel.
I got a Kindle ARC from Netgalley to review.
Anna has been through a rough year or so and is just trying to sort things out as she goes along. She's also just lost her mom, still not sure about how that all went down, as she was missing for a year at the same time and is trying to recover her memory of that period. So, a huge adjustment in an understatement. She opts to go to her cousin Brook's school for the year to make a go of things, and it appeals to her for some reason. So it's off to Nightfall Academy, a mysterious castle type place filled with all of the things you'd expect there and some you wouldn't even imagine. It seems lot of secrets are hidden behind the stone walls and the strange eyes of the students and instructors. Some of them are mages, even blood mages.
And then there's Blake, he seems to know things about her that even she doesn't know. At least not yet anyway. And he keeps urging her to be brave enough to seek it inside herself. She's happier putting all of that behind her, but it's not staying put. One way or another, it seems it has to come out. And that there are many dangers here, and not just for her. She has so much to learn.
I want to go to Nightfall Academy and live in it. This is a book filled with intrigue and I cannot wait to read more of Alayna's books.
Written by Alayna Ravenwood, this book follows Anna (I think I see what you did in this book Ravenwood) and she searches for the man who murdered who mother and what happened during the year she doesn't remember.
I enjoyed this book, and am highly anticipating the next book, but I don't know if I am willing to pay for the next book, and here is why.
The story is compelly, very Harry Potter like with its English private school and exclusive invitations, but the story and the characters get hard to follow. At times it feels like certain characters completely dissappear and lose all sense of purpose to the story. And the releationships, out side of Blake and Anna, seem to change in a whim.
Again, I enjoyed this book and want to read the second, but it has its flaws, and I have mixed feelings about how well it convays any subtleties it was trying for.
