All the breaking waves by Kerry Lonsdale. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I did really enjoy it.
I found myself riveted by Kerry Lonsdale's "All the Breaking Waves"! 4 generations of women/girls blessed/cursed with special abilities, layered with secrets, shame and guilt. Laced with a wonderful old romance and a looming death threat, this novel was interesting and enjoyable. Thank you to the author, NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
What a wonderful story! It's a thoughtful read about guilt, love, and family ~ and the power of revisiting the past in order to rescue the future. I love the writing and the way I was drawn into this story, and how the events were revealed in their own way.
Unfortunately, this was sent to me back when I was going through some health issues. I was not able to read or review this book.
Molly Brennan fled her hometown after something terrible happened, leaving behind the man she loved and swearing never to go back. Twelve years later, she's living a new life, with her beloved daughter Cassie. When Cassie suffers with frightening visions and repetitive nightmares, Molly is forced to return home for the sake of her daughter. In doing so, she must confront the past—and the man—she left behind.
All the Breaking Waves was a very enjoyable book. The magical realism aspect of the story was an unexpected surprise, as the blurb didn't indicate (to me) that it would be featured. I was thrilled by it, however, as magical realism is something I love to read.
The characters were easy for me to connect with, and Lonsdale's writing was excellent throughout. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books!
If you're looking for a book that sucks you in from the turn of the first page... look no further! Kerry Lonsdale weaves a picture perfect tale with suspense, memorable characters, and a plot that will have you hesitant to come up for air!! This is a must read for those who love magical realism!
This book was an easy read and quite enjoyable. A little different to the usual books that i read, so made a bit of a change. I hope to read more books by Kerry Lonsdale in the near future.
In a few short months, Kerry Lonsdale has shown the world that she has the skill and creativity to craft exceptional stories. While there are many authors who suffer from a "sophomore slump", Lonsdale is not one of them. Crafting a story that merges mistakes and reluctance of hope into unique characters with complicated pasts, Lonsdale invites readers to immerse themselves in the magic of a beachside setting where characters struggle to find their own place in a world where the realm of possibility is blurred.
It's easy to say I'm a life-long Lonsdale fan.
Each character in this book drew me in and made me want to root for him or her. The story is written in such a way that it is easy to get to know the characters and become invested in each of them. Even the special abilities that Molly, Cassie, and Nana Mary possess seem very real and accessible with Kerry Lonsdale's prose. I appreciate that the characters are honest, flawed, and seem like people I would easily come across in everyday life. The plot was predictable when it needed to be and threw a curveball at just the right times.
If you're looking for a quick, easy read that draws you in, I highly recommend this book. While this wouldn't be considered "high literature" I was impressed with the flow of the plot, the characters, and successful proofreading and editing. (No typos noted! That seems unusual lately.) I give it a solid 4 stars. Congratulations to Ms. Lonsdale on another entertaining read. I look forward to future books from this author.
I don't read a lot of magical realism, but I understand that there is a certain suspension of reality that you need to accept. In this case, four generations of women in Molly's family had unique "gifts". But the story wasn't really about the gifts. It was about the women themselves. Nana and Molly, both feeling guilt for long-ago tragedies. Molly and Cassie - a mother protecting her daughter and her daughter protecting her right back. The author writes in a very compelling manner, making it easy to identify with these special characters and rooting for them from the very beginning. I look forward to more from her.
All the Breaking Waves was an enjoyable read that had an interesting and unique plot I wasn't expecting.
After fleeing from her home in Pacific Grove twelve years ago, Molly has avoided returning as much as possible. Instead she has made a life for herself and her eight year old daughter Cassie teaching art history and crafting jewelry made from sea glass. When Cassie begins experiencing horrific visions and nightmares, Molly knows she has to return home and seek the help of her grandmother. Once there she is forced to face the decisions she made twelve years ago including seeing the man she loved whose heart she broke.
Molly didn't have the most stable childhood with an alcoholic father and a mother who couldn't stand up to him. It was the circumstances that led to their deaths that caused Molly to leave home. But Molly is devoted to her daughter and would do anything to protect her even if it means facing the past she ran away from. Molly still feels a lot of guilt about what happened twelve years ago and is a master at avoiding those topics.
Molly's daughter Cassie is a very sweet child and feels the need to help people. She gets quite upset when people don't listen to her and can throw some epic tantrums. Molly's grandmother Mary was the character that got on my nerves the most. She was incredibly secretive despite knowing they had a short timeline to work in and it irritated me that she always avoided difficult conversations. I also didn't like the way she disregarded Molly's wishes when it came to Cassie. Owen, Molly's first love, was my favorite character in the book. He's incredibly supportive and it was clear he never got over Molly.
Despite the mention of visions in the description for this book, I somehow missed it had an element of the other to it. So I was quite surprised when it was almost immediately revealed that the women in Molly's family all have some type of extra ability. Because I was confused by this, my enjoyment of the book was lessened but that's my fault for missing that being mentioned in the description. The plot of this book centers around a vision Cassie has involving Molly and everything spirals from there. The pacing of the book is good and I was surprised by how things ended up.
While I ultimately did enjoy All the Breaking Waves, I didn't like most of the characters and had a hard time connecting with them. I liked the author's writing enough though that I will check out her other books in the future.
Although fairly predictable, this was a great heartwarming read that really brought to a life a mother's relationship with her daughter. The supernatural factor was hard to believe, but completely relate-able in their journey to protect and care for each other. I would (and actually have) recommended this book and even gave it to my sister for Christmas!
The story was well-written and I enjoyed it. The characters were well-developed and the relationships among them were realistic and appealing. The supernatural aspect differentiated it from a typical romance novel.
I would recommend it to someone looking for light reading, and who enjoys novels with a supernatural twist.
This was good book with a little different story line. Kept my interest all the way through which it's key to a well written story.. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.
Thank you to Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book follows the story of Molly, who after a tragic family accident, fled her home and is now raising her daughter on her own. She is giving her daughter Cassie the life she never had as a child, but when Cassie starts having terrible visions and nightmares, causing issues for her at school, Molly realizes she must return to her home and all the secrets she has kept locked up for years. As a result, she will confront her past in order to let it go and move forward with all that life has to offer.
Kelly Lonsdale paints a vivid portrait of a contemporary family filled with secrets, strife and ultimately—love.
ALL THE BREAKING WAVES is a mystery suspense with strong twists of romantic, historical, and paranormal elements. A talented sea glass artist, Molly Brennan whose daughter, gifted with visions, predicts Molly’s death. Molly has five days to outwit fate or make the ultimate sacrifice any parent can make. Another excellent novel by Kerry Lonsdale.
This is my first book by Kerry Lonsdale's. I truly enjoyed reading it. The characters are likable & realistic enough to be believable. This book takes you on a journey of family secrets, love, loss & sacrifices.
Molly Brennen grew up with some psychic abilities, as did the other women in her family before her. Molly’s young daughter, Cassie, is also gifted with this ability. Cassie has premonitions of a couple of her school friends being in danger. She is able to protect these classmates because of her premonitions.
Molly doesn’t want Cassie to be ridiculed or alienated in her school or community, so she returns home to get help from her grandmother. While home, Molly must confront her tragic memories. She has to deal with her issues of lost love, tragedy, guilt & mistakes in order to be able to help Cassie.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review!
This was a quick and easy read and one I enjoyed. The storyline was a little familiar (girl returning home after many years and being reunited with her first love) but with a twist due to the psychic abilities of the key characters Molly and her young daughter Cassie. Having been a fan of the show Medium these themes are not off putting to me and I fell easily into the story without a flicker of doubt or disbelief.
I'm sure it's not a book that would appeal to everyone and perhaps sweeter than was necessary but you know, I simply enjoyed it for what it was. 3 stars
Kerry Lonsdale hits her mark with this story. I couldn't put it down. The dialogue. The imagery. The characters. The plot. The setting. It's all there. It all felt real as I was reading it.
This is Ms. Lonsdale's best work. Not to be missed.
Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
Absolutely wonderful read! I love all of Kerry Lonsdale's books. This one does not disappoint!
