Was looking at my Netgalley librabry and saw that I don't have this book. It must have been on a hard drive that died on me. so unfortunately I was never able to read it and now it is too long ago. Thank you though for approving me then and I hope I will be able to review books of yours in the future
This was a funny reading for most of the time, but I also found myself just wanting the end to finally come. Someone Else’s Summer was mostly a character-driven story, so you really have to like the characters. And I only liked them occasionally.
I could really understand Anna, the main character. She lost her big sister, Storm, and she’s trying to get back to her life. But she soon finds out that’s not as easy as she thinks, and she eventually has some breakdowns.
“She’s not here to guide me anymore. It’s time to figure it out on my own. I’ve never been so terrified.”
When they were children, Anna and Storm were really close. Eventually, they broke apart, and while the explanation wasn’t as weak as I initially thought it would be, I really disliked the fact that Anna started to treat Storm so badly, around her new friends. Unlike what I’ve previously read, the geek character was the sister, not the main character; and it was interesting, but not always pleasant, to see it through another character’s eyes.
Their family was a bit messed up. The parents were shocked, of course, and their retreat was understandable, but it really seemed that they had forgotten they had another child to care for. Her Aunt Morgan was my favorite character, always present, reliable and funny.
Unlike her “best friend”, Piper. Don’t get my inverted commas wrong, they stay friends until the very end, but I didn’t like Piper, both as a character and as a best friend. She was hurt too, sure, that’s understandable, but she was just so selfish throughout the entire book! I really liked Jovani, though. It’s not usual to see an ex-boyfriend hanging around after the break-up, but he proved himself to be a good friend. And the way he always had Anna’s back was admirable.
The actual plot was fine. I haven’t read many books with similar stories (I don’t think I’ve ever read one, actually), so it wasn’t exactly an old tale for me, but still quite predictable. I also didn’t like the way the romance developed. That’s why I say you have to really create an empathy with the characters, otherwise, you wouldn’t enjoy this at all. I wouldn’t recommend this book for people who have read similar stories in the past, but in case you like this type of plot and are interested in it, there are certainly good things in here.
Such a sweet book and I’m always a sucker for the “forced proximity” trope. The author does a great job portraying grief without it being too heavy on the reader.
I have to be honest, I wanted to read this one based solely on its cover! It turned out to be a lighthearted, quick read with a great mix of emotions.
I just love seeing this book's cover. This is perfect for a summer read with all the emotional aspects.
This book didn't work out for me and I had a hard time reading it and getting through it because it didn't hold my attention.
Unfortunately this book was not for me. The characters and plotline fell flat and I lost interest in the story quickly.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
This one did not end up working for me, however, I know there are lots of people that loved it so it appears that it's just a personal problem I had with the writing style.
I loved this book so much! Summer trip type novels are my jam at times and this one hit all the right notes, steeped in heartbreak but beautifully woven I could not get enough and I need more Rachel Bateman like yesterday. Sort of a Morgan Matson vibe, but in her own unique way. If you're a contemporary YA fan you must read
The book gave me a real summer feeling but overall it was quite up and down for me. The story was a bit cliché and I was bored a majority of the time. I was more intrigued by the synopsis.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review. Unfortunately I am unable to give you a proper review. I apologize for the inconvenience. I am just no longer interested to read this book. I appreciate the approval.
I received this arc from NetGalley for an honest review. When Anna's sister dies and she finds a diary of how her sister would spend one perfect summer, Anna knows she must follow her sister's plans. There's a lot of sadness and grief in this story, but also good times and learning to live without the ones you love. Overall a decent read for teens.
Despite the premise for this book being fairly cliche and typical, I really enjoy these coming of age, finishing unfinished business, dealing with grief type stories. That being said though, without Cameron, I really would've hated Anna's character. She was bratty and her anger was very often misguided but by the end of the book I actually grew to like her, but Cameron was my favourite throughout.
A quick summer read, fast paced, cute and with lovely caracthers. It was interesting to read how Anna tried to over come her anxiety so she could finish her sisters to do list.
I got about 30% through this book before I realized that I wasn't having a great time reading it.
Something about the story felt off to me and I couldn't connect very well with the main character. I was really intrigued to see where her relationship with her love interest would lead, but not enough to commit to the rest of the story.
I liked the family dynamics of this novel. I think it had a really strong start and I could really feel the grief everyone had.
Overall, this story isn't for me, but might be a great read for anyone looking for an emotional, summer contemporary!
I loved the overall general idea of this book and the sweet summer romance that unfolds itself. It was interesting to read how Anna tried to over come her anxiety so she could finish her sisters to do list.
Overall it was a very clean, quick read by a author new to me
I really enjoy reading this book, it reminded me of many of my favorite contemporary stories. The main character was sympathetic and the relationship that developed between them was very endearing. Road trip books are very interesting to me, and the frame of the list left by her sister made for a fast-paced reading experience. It was a very emotionally satisfying experience. I would definitely recommend this to fans of Morgan Matson or Jenny Han.
Good day! Before anything else, I would like to extend my deepest, sincerest gratitude for sending me a digital review copy of this book (via NetGalley). Thank you very much for the opportunity!
Unfortunately, I am sad to say that I have lost interest in this particular title, and consequently, I have decided against finishing it. Forcing myself to finish a book I am disinterested in (solely for the sake of finishing it) can only negatively impact the entirety of my reading experience, which, in turn, could result in me writing an unfairly negative review. That is a circumstance I hope to avoid. With that said, I believe that the best course of action is for me to simply not read it and to refrain from publicly posting any feedback regarding this book.
I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Again, thank you for the lovely opportunity!
First of all, how cool the author’s surname is?! It’s almost like Batman, but with E in between.
And now… let’s get into the book…
This book is perfect for summer (ok, I know I’m late, but you can always read it on a sunny day, even if it’s not summer, or maybe save it for next year?), and it’s perfect combination of serious and emotional with lovely and swoon worthy.
The story follows Anna who lost her sister Storm. One day she finds her sister’s bucket list, and along with Storm’s best friend Cameron she spends the summer trying to cross of as many things from the list as she can.
This novel is an emotional roller coaster that I couldn’t put down, and I understand why many people say it’s their favorite.
