Great cookbook..

I have made two recipes so far..and both turned out great.. Carnitas, salsas, pozole, wow o wow

I am even inspired to start grinding and making my own masa from this book.. fantastic!

One thing, though, I HATE about this cookbook.. the font for the ingredients... it’s very small.. and whichever font it’s called. It sucks.. 1/4 can easily be mistaken for 3/4 due to the font size and style. I really have to focus to tell the difference. Rant done

Lush photos, excellent recipes, this cookbook is a treat for the senses. Mexican cookery is one of my favorite genres but it has few titles that do it justice. This collection of regional recipes by Gonzalo Guzman is brimming with authenticity.

A very good book about Mexican cooking and the different equipment you could use to make the process easier. Now the recipes in the book are easy to follow and the author traditional and also some with a twist on them. Now I grew up cooking but not Mexican food until I married into my wife’s family, and one thing I have noticed is that each family is different in their cooking. One thing that is the same as in this book is when making salsas and how the flavor changes with how you prepare the chilies. Either by roasting them, boiling everything in a pot and peeling everything and then putting it all in a blender, or making it raw. My wife’s noni made it all of these ways and this book goes into it as well. The only thing that was different was that she never used a tortilla press she always made them with her hands, and in the book he suggests that by having one will make the process go faster. The recipes are easy to follow and the stories with the chapters were a good touch also, with good photos this is an excellent book all around.

Great recipes with great photos. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but they look very tasty.

Thank you Netgalley for this book.

It's more than just a recipe book, it has some history of the Mexican kitchen and the background and basics for building a Mexican Pantry with detailed descriptions of the spices and techniques in traditional Mexican cooking.
The photos are beautiful. (I wish there were more). The instructions are easy to follow even though the recipes are complex.
The book is divided into House recipes,Small plates, Big plates, Drinks & Desserts and Salsas. One better than the other one.
Guzmán recommends making as much as you can from scratch for maximum flavor. For us followers of the slow food movement...this is our book.
If I have to use just one word to describe this book, it would be:Inspiring.

Lots of yummy recipes I'm sure. I may even try a few, but it needs more photographs of the dishes being prepared and, of course, the finished products!! we women often times decide to try a recipe after seeing a photo of it Looks tasty- we'll make it!

A beautiful selection of traditional Mexican cooking from a talented chef. Some recipes may seem complex, but the step-by-step instructions really help. With family history and stories included, this is a book to be treasured. Recommended.

A lovely book with so much information about the basics and origins of Mexican cuisine with some delicious sounding recipes which I have yet to try. Whenever we travel abroad we always search out the "real foods" of an area, cooked by local people to get the authentic taste experience. I feel that, thanks to this book, I now have a greater understanding of traditional Mexican cuisine and why many times we are disappointed with restaurant versions.

I must admit that many of the recipes are truly a labour of love, requiring far more time and patience than I generally have available, and I spend a lot of time preparing food. However I will certainly be trying out some of the simpler salsas and definitely want to make the pickled vegetables.

My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a digital review copy.

Wonderful book, but now I'm hungry and have to raid the larder to cook something with at least a touch of Mexico. So anybody out there who wants the real Mexican taste? Yes? Well go and get this book, it's fabulous!

Ten Speed Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Nopalito. This is my honest opinion of the book.

Nopalito is a window into the world of Gonzalo Guzmán, a chef with clear passion for cooking food steeped in the Mexican traditions of his upbringing. Nopalito restaurants are a labor of love for co-authors Guzman and Stacy Adimando, and this cookbook is evidence of where it all began. Homestyle Mexican recipes give the cookbook its authenticity, bringing regional cuisine to the home kitchen.

Nopalito starts at the foundation: building the Mexican pantry. From a description of masa, in the choosing of the ingredients and the making of, to the preparation of homemade tortillas and tamales, the cookbook breaks down the basic ingredients from the beginning. The section on the different seasonings used is very helpful, as well as the one on nopales and nopalitos. With so much time spent on educating and instructing readers as to the essentials, however, Nopalito is almost one quarter in before the real recipes begin. Here you see the recipes that you would expect: Guacamole, Crema, Adobo, and Pico de Gallo, but it is when the unexpected recipes are uncovered that readers will come back for more. Fish tacos marinated in adobo, Sweet potato tamales with mole amarillo, and Smashed shrimp with eggs and salsa are just a few recipes that make their appearance. Nopalito is more than just a cookbook; it is a conversation about Mexican cuisine and its techniques. The instructions are easy to follow and the explanations enhance the cookbook. I do wish that more photos would accompany the recipes, as the colorful food would provide a beautiful backdrop. Readers who are looking for a good Mexican cookbook with recipes that can help to provide an authentic dining experience will enjoy Nopalito.

Nopalito is special and you can see lots of thought and research has been done to ensure each recipe has as much information as possible.

It's more than just a recipe book it has lots of background information about the family and the history behind it.
It also has lots of great information about Mexico and what you would find in a Mexican Pantry and kitchen with explanations regarding utensils etc..
Plus plenty of information on ingredients so you get the very best from your recipes.
Explanations are detailed and very easy to follow.

There is something for everyone, meat, fish, vegeterian, desserts. Plenty of yummy recipes to try.

Mexican food is one of my favourites and I couldn't wait to get stuck into this book, discovering different food from the normal enchalidas and fajitas I enjoy so much.

The recipes are measured in cups which I don't find to be a problem as cup measurements are easily available or can be converted using internet conversion tables. However I do understand that this could potentially be an issue if you had no access to either.

I can't wait to get stuck in and to try some of these amazing authentic recipies.

I will definitely be recommending this great book to friends and family.

Delicious, delicious Mexican food - every single one of these recipes looks absolutely amazing and delicious. I really shouldn't read through cookbooks while hungry, but I really want to make some handmade tortilla chips and salsa right now.

I’m lucky enough to be only a two hour drive from Nopalito, in San Francisco, but I still leaped at the chance to review the cookbook, and to bring some of the food-love home to my own kitchen. I’m a big fan of many of the small plates (I especially recommend any of the salads, the empanadas, and the gorditas), but the biggest lure of this beautiful new cookbook was a chile spattered weekend spent working my way through the salsa chapter.

And now that I’ve got a fridge full of colorful salsa, I’ve got a beef shoulder just asking to to be a lovely stew, and then I want to get my hands on some pork belly skin to make the quesadillas rojas con chicharrones…

Thanks for the advance read of this inspiring and fun-filled cookbook.

The recipes are clearly described, but many of them felt to me quite complex, so they're perhaps not ideal for real beginners to cooking - though they do have some simpler recipes too, particularly some delicious salsa recipes and instructions on how to make your own tortillas. These are easy to follow and yield great results. There are also some great snacks and 'small plate' recipes which look deliciously mouth-watering.

The authors clearly explain what specific ingredients you'll need to get to make your dishes taste incredibly authentic, and why you should use them, as well as some of the equipment too, which is very useful if you're not au fait with really authentic Mexican cooking.

This is obviously a rather specific cookbook, so won't have the same broad appeal that other more general recipe books might have, but it's beautifully presented with some amazing images that will make you want to jump right inside the book!

The photography makes this book ideal for the coffee table... when you're not busy flicking through it deciding what to cook next, that is! From the photos the results look amazing and the dishes look delicious. A few recipes which I've tried have turned out really well, and I'm by no means amazing at cooking, so I'd say give this a go - you won't regret it!
