Finally, another FBI Profiler novel. Lisa Gardner knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat by filling her crime dramas with realistic details and plenty of twists and turns. This one had me guessing from the beginning and reading late into the night. Highly recommended!

Who is Telly Ray Nash? And who is he to Sharlah May Nash? Sharlah's father stabbed her mother almost a decade ago and then in the immediate aftermath, her brother, still a child himself, killed their father to save them both. Or at least that's what the police believe. Nothing's come easy to Sharlah and now as a teenager, it looks like her life might finally be falling into place. FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife Rainie Conner are in the process of adopting the slightly troubled girl. They've been working with her and the hard work seems to be paying off.

Now it looks like Sharlah's brother Telly may be on a spree, shooting his way through their small town in Oregon. As the local police, Pierce and Rainie all race to find Telly, a different, much more complex story begins to emerge. One that threatens to ruin the stable life Sharlah's working towards. As the manhunt closes in, the reader finds out if Telly Ray Nash chooses the path of hero or zero.

To level with y'all, I wasn't expecting much from Right Behind You. Not after The Girl Before completely blew my mind last week. So, I was kind of shocked to find that I couldn't put Right Behind You down. It might as well have glued in my hand. This book was full of twists and if you're into thrillers, you're going to love this one!

This is my first time reading a Quince and Rainie book. I was not disappointed at all. A very good mystery as to who and why? Why would someone after eight years just start killing again? They don’t look at all of the evidence like most law enforcement. With a different set of eyes and their minds they come up with other scenarios, not everyone agrees, but they have their reasons for looking at this picture differently. I cannot go into too much detail or I might give it away, and I don’t want to do that. This is a very powerful book about families, having one and wanting to adopt. There are also a few scenes of abuse but it actually goes with the story and is explained throughout the book. All of the characters are full of emotion and depth, even Quince and Rainie who have overcome the tragedies from the other books. This a very good book.

Right Behind You is a good book with an interesting premise: a brother and sister and separated in foster care after a violent crime in their family. While that crime is revealed right away, the crime that sets other events in motion years later is a slow build. This book features Quincy and Rainie, profilers who evidently are very popular among author Lisa Garner fans. I enjoy a slow, suspenseful build very much, but this might have been the slow build without enough suspense. Character detail is outstanding and the parts that did marry the build and suspense did so beautifully. But in the end, there wasn't as big a payoff as I expected. In fact, it was a bit confusing on who was who. Overall, a good book just not a great book.

I was thrilled to be back in the world of Quincy & Rainie in Lisa Gardner's "Right Behind You".
A superb family-themed mystery/thriller!
Sharlah May Nash's older brother Telly beat their drunken father to death with a baseball bat in order to save both of their lives. They are separated at that point, both going into different foster homes. Eight years later, 13 year old Sharlah has finally moved on and is settling into her new life with her dog Luca and with her about to be adopted parents, retired FBI profilers Pierce Quincy and Rainie Conner.
Sheriff Shelly Atkin is notified of shots fired at the EZ gas station and upon her arrival discovers two dead bodies, an abandoned pickup and security camera footage of a teenage shooter with flat, dead eyes staring straight into the camera before he shoots it out. The killer is identified as 17 year old Telly Ray Nash, Sharlah's brother, who has a series of minor offences.
Quincy is called in to assist with the case and is stunned to learn the identity of the suspect. Upon the discovery of two other related murders Quincy feels that Sharlah might be his next victim. The frantic manhunt begins and a thrilling ride ensues.
With extremely clever twists and turns, an intriguing storyline with plenty of suspense, and a shocking conclusion, Lisa Gardner is at the top of her game with "Right Behind You".

Thank you to Dutton and NetGalley for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Right Behind You is the Seventh installment in author Lisa Gardner's Quincy & Rainie series. This series features ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, his wife ex-police officer Lorraine "Rainie" Conner, as well as Quincy's daughter FBI Agent Kimberly Quincy. Even though Quincy & Rainie are supposedly retired, they are called in to assist with cold cases since they are the masters of hunting down monsters. For this installment alone, Quincy & Rainie share the narrative with two kids (Telly & Sharlah) who have seen so much pain and suffering, that people have decided that they are too damaged to keep around.

Eight years ago, Telly Ray Nash killed his alcohol addled father with a baseball bat to protect his younger sister, Sharlah, from being stabbed to death. Their mother was also killed that fateful day. Telly and his sister were separated and found themselves in separate foster homes. After some horrible experiences by both kids, and several foster homes later, Sharlah was taken in by Quincy & Rainie and she will soon be adopted if everything pans out. Her estranged brother Telly, was taken in by Frank and Sandra Duvall who hoped to give Telly the training and support that he needs to survive once he ages out of the system when he turns 18.

Right Behind You is set in the small town of Bakersville, Oregon where Quincy, Rainie, and their foster daughter Sharlah May Nash live with Sharlah's dog Luka. Luka is a former police dog who has become Sharlah's best friend and confidant. Quincy, Rainie, Telly, & Sharlah share the spotlight with Sheriff Shelly Atkins, as well as Cal Noonan, cheese maker by day, tracker of fugitives when called upon. After Atkins discovers the double shooting at the EZ Gas, it becomes all hands on deck in order to find out who was responsible.

But, after the Duvall's are found murdered in their own home, Telly becomes the most wanted person. Everyone, including Quincy and Rainie join in to hunt him down. But, what frightens Quincy and Rainie the most, is that Telly is the estranged brother of their daughter Sharlah. A daughter they would sacrifice everything to protect & keep safe. One has to really focus on the relationship between Telly and Sharlah. Telly was the adult in the house whey they were children. Telly took Sharlah to the library, made sure she was fed, and protected her. Yes, they have some unfinished business between them, but you have to be rooting for some sort of reconciliation and a happy ending for both.

Truth is that I read the first book in this series, but never got around to the reading the rest of the series before now because I was hooked on the authors D.D. Warren series. I do know that Quincy's daughter Kimberly has also been featured in this series as an FBI agent who has her own mysteries to solve. I do know that each of these stories are standalone with a beginning and an ending. No cliffhangers here! I was happy to see that readers wanted another installment in this series. I was happy that the author actually listened to her readers and wrote another story in this series. This, my friends, is why Lisa Gardner is on the top of my favorite author lists.

If you have read about Quincy and Raine in the past this book is a must read for you. Solid plot and a life that will seem appropriate for them. Their adopted daughter has more issues than you can imagine, but remains the perfect daughter for them. The book can stand alone, but after you read it you will want to learn more about their background.

For fans of Karin Slaughter, Alex Brennan, Mury Burton, or any FBI/Police novel of suspense.

Young siblings Telly and Sharlah Nash are separated after Telly kills their drug-addled father, who's just stabbed their alcoholic mother to death.

Now, nine years later, both are living in foster homes. Telly is about to age out of the system, and Sharlah's foster parents, ex-cops Quincy and Rainie, are about to begin the process of adopting Sharlah.

Life is pretty good for Sharlah and her foster parents. And then one day, Quincy and Rainie are called in to assist in the investigation of a spree killer - Telly Nash. The stakes are even higher for Quincy and Rainie, because it looks like Sharlah could be one of Telly's targets...

This was my first time reading Gardner's work, so I'm not familiar with the first six Quincy and Rainie novels. That didn't seem to be a problem, though, as Gardner does a fairly good job establishing their background so readers like me aren't lost.

Gardner's knowledge of the challenges foster and adoptive parents face is pretty evident, as a lot of Sharlah and Telly's behaviors are typical signs of oppositional defiant disorder and/or reactive attachment disorder. Sharlah and Telly's relationship is complex and heartbreaking - is Telly still trying to save his sister or is he out to destroy her?

The investigation scenes play out a lot like a cop show ... a lot of law enforcement jargon and acronyms (thank goodness for Wikipedia and the dictionary, which are easily accessible with Kindle). My least favorite character is probably Cal, the tracker who, as we're reminded about 500 times, also works at the local cheese factory. The number of joking references to his cheese-making expertise was a bit tiresome.

I definitely appreciated all the twists and turns in the investigation, learning that Telly's foster parents - especially the mother - were not quite who they seemed to be. Once those secrets started to emerge, I had a vague idea of how things would play out. Nevertheless, I was definitely surprised by the ending!

Overall, I really enjoyed "Right Behind You" and hope to read more of Gardner's work.

4.5 stars.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wow this was a great book. Full of action and suspense I could not put this one down. I just recently discovered Lisa Gardner with get previous book Find Her and I loved that one as well so I was excited to get in advance copy of Right Behind You and it did not disappoint! I was really able to identify with the characters, the story was intriguing and I was kept guessing through the entire book. Great read that I would recommend to any lover of thrillers!

Sharlah May and Telly Ray Nash are 5 and 9 when they’re seperated after Telly is forced to murder his parents in self-defense. Now 13, Sharlah is living with former FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife, Rainie Conner. For the first time since she’s been seperated from her brother, Sharlah feels safe and comfortable. But it’s her brother, Telly, who proves himself to be a monster when there is evidence he’s responsible for a nearby convient store murder–the second stop on a suspected killing spree. All signs point to Sharlah being next on Telly Ray’s kill list.

If there is one.

The “if” is what will keep readers hooked through to the very end of the novel. Through multiple points of view, including Telly’s (which is told from the past, leading up to the event), we are given information that points to new people and new reasons why Telly’s on a shooting rampage.

With dark twists and unexpected turns (except for maybe those most familiar with police procedurals), Lisa Gardner does not disappoint in Right Behind You.

Lisa Gardner put up a poll on Facebook asking fans which character they would like to see in her next book. Gardner thought for sure it would be D.D. Warren or Tessa Leoni (I love D.D. but am not such a big fan of Tessa). But to her surprise people choose Quincy and Rainie. It has been about eight years since Gardner wrote, Say Goodbye. I thought it was the last book in the FBI Profiler series and given up hope for another book. Then of course, I started to think, "what if I didn't like the book?"

RIGHT BEHIND YOU (Quincy & Rainie/ FBI Profiler: #7) Written by Lisa Gardner

JANUARY 31, 2017; 400 Pages; (Penguin Group Dutton)

Genre: mystery, suspense, thriller, FBI, police, foster children
(I received an ARC from the PUBLISHER.)

Rating: ★★★★1/2

Quincy and Rainie are back, and they are in the process of adopting their thirteen year old foster daughter, Sharlah May Nash. Sharla has had a hard childhood. Her parents drank and took drugs. She was raised by her older brother, Telly Ray. He himself was only four when she was born. Not only has he made sure she was fed, Telly had saved their lives by beating their father to death with a baseball bat. They have been apart for eight years living through the foster system. Now, finally Sharlah may get her forever family. A family that has seen the dark side of the world and know where Sharlah's fears lay.

On Sharlah's first day of swimming camp, all hell breaks loose. The EZ Mart has a double murder with the suspect now on the run. Quincy is called in by the local police to profile the killer to get his identity. As the clues are revealed and more bodies pile up, it seems like Telly may be the spree killer. Quincy and Rainie must try and figure out what set Telly off after eight years, and if Sharlah is in danger. Telly and Sharlah Nash both "know the biggest fear can be right behind you".

Wow, this novel started off with a bang! I was sucked in right away. We get the point of view of both Sharla and Telly from the night eight years ago and present day. I liked this because we got a better sense of the characters and how they evolved. Yet, Gardner reveals things slowly at a time, so that the mystery unravels as we find out more about that night and how it led them to this. We also see how Quincy and Rainie are trying to solve this case and deal with being parents. This is not a linear case but has so many aspects to it. I think if it was revealed by one character's point of view we would almost not believe the ending. I think the way Gardner presented this story worked great. It's the kind of suspense thriller novels I thrive on. I highly recommend this book to all those who love a good mystery filled with suspenseful moments.

You don't have to read the other Quincy and Rainie novels to like this book, but I think all the background that we learn in those novels enriches the experience. Plus, I am a huge stickler for reading books in order.

Loved the book! Again Lisa has delivered a thriller that keeps you wanting to pick the book up and keep reading, maybe thats why im so sleepy this morning. Loved getting to know Quincey and Rainie again. Liked the multiple points of view, sometimes this gets muddy, but Gardner pulled it off in this one.

Eight years ago, Sharlah Nash’s older brother beat their drunken father to death to save their lives. Now thirteen, she has found a home with ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife, former police officer Rainie Conner. Trust, however, doesn’t come easily. Life has taught the young girl all-too-well of the evil that exists in the world. Still, she can’t help but hope that maybe, just maybe, she’ll finally get a shot at the family she’s never had.

When a shooting at a local convenience store leaves two dead, police identify the killer as Telly Ray Nash. As a manhunt ensues, it becomes evident that the hunted is on a hunt of his own, and his prey is none other than his little sister. With the number of bodies mounting, Sharlah must decide whether to run for her life or confront the brother she hasn’t seen since the day he killed for her.

Right Behind You delivers a gut-wrenching, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller. Lisa Gardner expertly toys with the readers’ emotions dragging them through the entire feelings spectrum — more than once.

Without a doubt, Gardner’s novels straddle and even push the limits of my intense/dark tolerance level. Yet, her intricate characters and nail-biting suspense bring me back time and time again, and Right Behind You is probably my favorite. The author explores the importance of family and the devastation that can come from the broken relationships within it.

My heart went out to Sharlah immediately. Understandably, her tragic background has left her damaged and wary, but despite that, she has managed to hold on to a sliver of hope. For that matter, out of all the Gardner novels I’ve read, I would say this one had the most “hopeful” ending. That’s not to say the characters won’t have some serious baggage to wade through once all is said and done — and that’s not counting the issues they already had coming into the story.

The author brilliantly utilizes the wilds of Oregon and the various settings for her purposes, effectively isolating the characters and heightening the suspense.

Though Right Behind You is the seventh installment in the FBI Profiler series, the first six aren’t imperative to following the story. Until this one, I hadn’t read a Quincy and Rainie novel, and I didn’t feel lost once. As always, readers should be prepared for mature content and strong language.

Lisa Gardner is quite simply one of the best thriller writers today. Her books always keep me in suspense and Right Behind You is no exception. Right Behind You features FBI profilers Pierce Quincy and Rainie Conner along with their 13 year old soon to be adopted foster daughter Sharlah May Nash.

When Sharlah was five years old, her older brother Telly beat their abusive drunken father to death with a baseball bat in an effort to save both Sharlah and Telly. The siblings have been separated ever since that time. Then Quincy is called about a double homicide at the local gas station and learns that Sharlah's brother Telly is the likely suspect. A manhunt ensues to try to find Telly and stop him before he finds his next victim. Is Telly a cold blooded killer or is there more to the story?

I'd suggest clearing your schedule before you pick this one up. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and has so many unexpected twists and turns. In addition to all the hallmarks of a perfect thriller, Right Behind You has very believable and relatable characters. I got completely caught up in this book and I know you will too. I highly recommend adding Right Behind You to your must read list.

Lisa Gardner has taken an unusual and reader driven approach to her most recent novel “Right Behind You.” Gardner conducted a Facebook poll to determine which series characters should be in her 2017 novel. Happily, readers chose ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his partner, Rainie Conner. They have not been featured in a novel since 2008’s “Say Goodbye,” so it was a pleasure to catch up with their lives, which now includes foster daughter Sharlah who they are in the process of adopting. The story hinges on the relationship between Sharlah and her biological brother Telly, from whom she has been separated since horrific events in their childhood home. Now Telly is a suspect in several vicious murders and appears to be guilty. But count on Gardner to provide plenty of twists and turns so the reader is compelled to race through the book to learn Telly and Sharlah’s history and discover the perpetrator of the murders. Another outstanding police procedural novel from Gardner with a empathetic and insightful view of family fractures and rebuilding.

What a nail-biter! This is my first book by Lisa Gardner, and it won't be my last. Jumping into a series without starting from the beginning can be a terrible idea, but this one works. I wasn't lost. It absolutely works as a standalone. I still want to read the others!

Gardner has an ability to make you care about her characters. Even if I'd just "met" a character a few pages ago, I cared about them and wanted them to make it to the end of the book. That's a large part about why this book was such a nail-biter. Instead of just running around trying to catch a killer, we're getting to know the characters on an emotional level... and they're immediately relatable and likeable. Some great thoughts included about what "family" means to different people.

Eight years ago, young Telly beat his father to death with a baseball bat. His father stabbed his mother before coming after Telly and little sister Sharlah. He defended himself. He defended his sister. And changed their lives forever. Telly and Sharlah haven't had contact since that day, placed into different foster homes and leading different lives. Sharlah now lives with Quincy and Rainie. She continues to be shy and closed off, but is beginning to warm to her future adoptive parents. She keeps her dog Luka, a retired police dog, by her side. Telly is nearly an adult and has a different relationship with his foster parents. They are kind, but focused on preparing him for life without them once he finishes school. He has not kept completely out of trouble in his teenage years, sometimes lashing out violently... but never anything like this. Something in Telly seems to have snapped. He's caught on camera at a convenience store after two people are murdered. More bodies pile up as he leads the the authorities (including Quincy and Rainie) on a manhunt. Can they find him and put a stop to the killings... before he gets to Sharlah?

I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Penguin Group/Dutton, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased

Thirteen year-old Sharlah hasn’t seen her older brother, Telly, since he killed their parents in self-defense eight years ago. Obviously, these two didn’t have the greatest start in life with drug addicted, violent parents, but they had each other. Telly loved Sharlah, would feed her, make sure her clothes were clean, and take her to the library each day after school to read her favorite books. Now Sharlah is finally getting a permanent home, and parents who love her: Quincy and Rainie, a perfect pair for this troubled girl. Both have personally experienced firsthand the horrors humans can inflict on others, both have their own dark pasts, and can easily relate to Sharlah’s issues.

As everything is looking up for Sharlah, Telly life is another story. It seems he’s the prime suspect in a series of shootings that baffle law enforcement. Did that night Telly saved them change him so much that he could commit these crimes or is there more at play here? Sharlah doesn’t know what to believe, but she must find out the truth. Thankfully, she has her criminal profiling parents to help. The clock is ticking to find answers and Telly before anyone else is killed.

I was thrilled to hear after so many years we’d be getting another Quincy and Rainie book! Apparently, Lisa Gardner wrote Right Behind You in response to a poll asking readers who should star in her next mystery, and the overwhelming answer was this beloved duo. Quincy and Rainie have long been my favorite characters of Ms. Gardner’s many books. Their history, emotional struggles, and romance captured my heart! The mysteries they worked on were riveting! I spent the last few weeks re-reading most of their previous stories before reading Right Behind You. That isn’t necessary to enjoy this story, I believe you can read this installment as a standalone, but it did greatly enhance my enjoyment.

I will say the mystery part didn’t really take off for me until the 39% mark, but I didn’t mind. Life with Sharlah, Rainie and Quincy, still acclimating to each other while investigating the shooting, was engrossing to me. More threads and possibilities become apparent as the team investigates Telly’s life with his foster parents, a place he seemed to settle into, and the urgency to find Telly ramps up. I was eager to get to the bottom of what actually happened all the while hoping everything would turn out okay for Sharlah and her brother!

Ms. Gardner really does her research into criminal behavior and investigative techniques making her mysteries a stand out for me. They are well written crime procedurals with a solid, multi-layered cast of characters. Most of her stories have left me thinking about them long after I closed the book.

Sharlah and Telly Nash were raised in an abusive environment by drug addicted parents. At age nine, Telly killed his drunk father with a baseball bat to protect himself and his sister. The siblings were separated into different foster homes and they remained apart for eight years.

Retired FBI profilers Rainie Conner and Pierce Quincy are foster parents to Sharlah. She has turned thirteen and has been passed around to different families. To the surprise of their quiet community, a double murder takes place at a local convenience store. Rainie and Pierce are brought in to help investigate the case. Video feed obtained from the store identifies the shooter as Telly Nash.

This book is a mystery with lots of suspense. The family relationships weaved into the book creates a puzzle for readers. It's filled with twists and turns and keeps you guessing. This is book 7 in a series but it can be read as a stand alone story.
