As Maggie's memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding?
I wanted to like this YA drama but I didn't. I didn't relate to any of the characters and I thought the "mystery' was silly. The whole thing was just not believable.
Fantastic book, I really enjoyed reading this one by Kristina McBride. A well crafted story. Recommend to all.
3.5/5 rating
lacked character development, but the story read fine without it. Protagonist was a little clueless and had low agency but I still really liked watching the story unfold. I would still probably recommend this book to anyone who like heart-string pulling novels.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I love a book that I get attached to and makes me feel like I lived through it
Maggie and her friends are at the gorge. Maggie and her boyfriend Joey are at the top of the cliff, about to jump off -- then everything goes blank. Maggie opens her eyes and Adam is urging her out from the bush she's hidden herself behind. There is screaming, sirens, and blood. Joey is dead. The story goes on as Maggie and her friends deal with their loss, as Maggie attempts to piece together her final moments with Joey in the hopes of figuring out what, why, and how it all happened. But it's not all it seems. Along the way, Maggie discovers secrets that threaten to sever the friendships, and distort the image of Joey from her heart.
This was part teen drama, part romance, part mystery, part crime thriller, part psychological study. It flowed well, with the narrative going back and forth between the aftermath of Joey's death, and the events leading up to it.
What really impressed me about the book was all the secrets that did surface, I felt the betrayal as if I were a member of this group and that it had also happened to me.
This book is intriguing. There's twists and turns, plenty to keep you interested throughout the book!
An okay YA mystery novel. I read the first 20% or so then the rest of it in a couple of hours the following evening. It tells the story of Maggie who’s perfect boyfriend Joey dies in a tragic accident whilst they are hanging out with their group of friends.
Joey was handsome, witty popular and friends with the most popular kids in their grades. Maggie was sort of on the edge for years and started becoming part of the group when she dated Joey. Maggie was with Joey just before he died, they were doing some stupid jump of a cliff into the lake below stunt, and something happened. Only now Joey’s dead and Maggie can’t remember what happened.
The group are interrogated by police and parents about what happened but no one has any answers. It all lies on Maggie who seems to be so traumatised she can’t focus or remember on anything that happened at that time. She can remember up to a certain point and then some time afterwards but is blocking the actual event.
The focus of the novel is Maggie grieving over Joey’s death and trying to figure out what happened, reflecting on her relationship with Joey and her friends. Joey’s best friend Adam is by Maggie’s side and the most supportive, joker Pete doesn’t really seem to want to know what’s going on, party girl Tanna is there to lend a hand and popularity queen Shannon seems to be taking Joey’s demise harder than Maggie herself.
Of course everyone is looking at Joey through rose-coloured glasses. This particular reader thought Joey was a dick. He was a massive douchebag. Cruel, manipulative and two faced. This came through as the story progressed and the reader learns of some of the things going on with Joey that Maggie never knew about.
Maggie’s voice is believable, and she was a likeable enough lead. I didn’t get a particular sense of emotion or closeness to any of the characters or the story itself. It was a fairly fast paced read. It was interesting enough and the story was quite compelling and well written enough that I needed to know what happened. Given the events of the book when the questions are finally answered the were no overwhelming surprises at the end. At least not for me.
I liked seeing Maggie finally getting the cloud lifted and realising she can move on with her life and finally seeing the truth about some of the people she thought were her friends. Ultimately it’s a novel about dealing with grief when a loved one passes, and how friendships can change and how people can change and grow.
Well written and while this particular book wasn’t necessarily something I would read again but I would definitely read something by this author again.
Thank you to Netgalley and Sky Pony Press for approving my request to view the title.
A quick read that taught me something. I liked the characters and the plot, and the writing was a-okay. I feel like this would be a good book for people who needs a light, but important and emotional book.
I've seen the original cover of this book for years. I was surprised to find out that it was being remarketed with a new cover. I never knew that the story surrounded a mysterious death but since I love mysteries I thought this would be perfect. Problem is, if you layout the mystery so obviously you can't call it a mystery.
I wanted to like this but from the get go I pretty much knew what happened down to the reasoning. It was a pretty messed up situation that led to the death of Joey, the main character's boyfriend. We are trying to figure out what Maggie knows. What happened that Joey, the thrill seeker, fell wrongly and died? Sounds interesting but again I could see everything from a mile away. It still felt wrong the way Joey died when all was revealed like Maggie couldn't have waited one moment (ha!) to do what she did? Bad timing.
Maggie and her circle of friends were unrelatable. There was a whole weird thing happening with blame as well as some shady friends but ultimately I didn't care enough about it. I didn't feel anything for her love interest either. I thought it was weird that the first thing he decided to do was drive her home away from a murder scene/potential investigation... How was that smart? This was unfortunately a complete disappointment.
I can't wait to buy this for my class! I sped through it and really felt that the characters sprang from the page. The dialogue was very natural and I found the storyline convincing and very engrossing. I think that my teenage classes will be just as absorbed as I was by this perceptive tale of a summer that can't be forgotten easily. I loved this book and think that McBride is a talented writer with a knack for creating characters that my young people won't just relate to they'll care about to. A fantastic summer read.
Oh. My. God!
I know, before reading this book, that I’ll be having some feels because Joey died. Like, it didn’t matter at that time that I didn’t know who Joey is, the fact is that he died before he get to live his life. He died too young, his life cut short before he even reached adulthood. I know before reading this that I can expect some mystery, because 1) it was listed as one of the genres; and 2) we get that idea from the summary.
But what I didn’t expect was the extent of the secrets that Joey, and another two characters that I shall not name kept. What I didn’t expect was the lies and the betrayals. What I didn’t expect was how much this book would tore me apart.
One of the things that I love about this book was the friendship (before some things were revealed, that is). They were such a tight knit group, and books with that kind of friendship always attracted me. While I empathize for Maggie, there were some small moments that I felt annoyed at her. And Joey, god, I like him so much at first, the Joey that Maggie painted. But knowing the real, flawed Joey… I kind of hate him, but at the same time, I can’t. Because, while Joey was like a jerk, but I think, somewhere along the way, his feelings were genuine.
Shannon though… Shannon I really, really disliked. I hated the passive-agressive way she was acting.
And Adam, I liked him from the start. I guess, after reading a lot of kind-of similar books, good characters just give this certain vibe, and that was the vibe I got from Adam.
To sum it up, this book just hooked me from the beginning, and I ended up reading it in one sitting. This book somehow reminded me of History Is All You Left Me, heartbreaking although it was less devastating than the latter.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
One Moment by Kristina McBride was full of twists and turns. Yes, some were obvious but it was very good. It's about friends that must overcome differences when one of them tragically dies. It was painfully good.
Thank you NetGalley for this free ebook in exchange of a honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, and I really felt for Maggie. Losing your boyfriend would be the hardest thing to deal with, especially when you are there to witness and see it. I felt like Maggie had to go through a lot, not only losing your boyfriend, but also finding out he was cheating on you with one of your really good friends. Like seriously what a snake!!! I mean I'm sorry you are a daredevil and jumped off a cliff and died, but don't cheat on your girlfriend for over a year and not tell her.
Poor Maggie had to figure it out herself, that her boyfriend was a snake. And one of your good friends, seriously, hell no I would never talk to you again!!! And then there's Adam who truly likes Maggie, but Maggie was too stuck on Joey. I felt like Adam really helped Maggie get through losing Joey. And in the end, of course, there's a romance.
I think the only downfall, was the book was kinda shorter than I wanted. I wanted to know more about Maggie and Adam.
I recommend this book, I think it does a great job on how to deal with grief, which can be very hard when you are teenager.
Sky Pony Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of One Moment. This is my honest opinion of the book.
What made the perfect summer turn tragic? When Maggie cannot recall what happened after the party at the gorge, will the truth of the one moment destroy all of their lives?
One Moment is filled with teenage angst and with the convoluted plot lines that usually accompany the aforementioned drama. This book is more about the mystery surrounding Joey's death than about the characters contained within. With the plot driving the story, the characters take a back seat to the action. The motivations and actions of some of the characters are suspicious, as if they only exist to move the story along. One Moment missed the mark for me, as the characters seemed flat and had no depth. Although the story should have been compelling, I was not drawn into the world that the author tried to convey. For these reasons, I would not recommend One Moment to other readers.
Talk about a book that has it all - romance, mystery, drama, crime thriller! Wow! Loved the story, the characters and the writing - such a great book!!
I didn't end up getting to this book before it was published. I did go out and get my own copy and ended up DNFing the book. It just wasn't my think. The authors writing style just didn't mesh well with me.
i just finished reading one moment by kristina mcbride. i received and ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
this was a really good book. it was a relatively quick read and once you get into it you'll find it hard to put down.
the story centers around Maggie, our endearing protagonist, and her group of friends. they're the quintessential group of best friends. 3 boys, 3 girls, all inseparable, with 2 of them romantically involved.
they have traditions, secrets, their "place". we get to know about all of those things and the 6 of them after a tragic accident that leaves them seriously grieving for what is presumably the first time. The accident along with flashbacks and revealed secrets intertwine to bring a much different, less idyllic reality into the story line.
i could have actually read a few more chapters and was a little sad to see this story come to an end.
throw this book in your bag the next time you're headed to the beach, or curl up on your couch with a blanket and get ready to lose all track of time and the world around you as you find yourself immersed in this twisty read!
4/5 stars from this girl!
The thing that I like best about One Moment is that even though it had a pretty simplistic storyline, it executes it wonderfully, with loads of emotion and excellently written characters. The story spools out from an accident that happens when these six close friends go cliff-diving. Maggie's boyfriend was going along with her for her dive, but instead ends up hitting a ledge on the way down and dying. For her part, she can't remember what exactly had happened up there right before the jump. As she begins to unravel the memories locked in her own mind, she contemplates her relationship with him, and looking back she realizes that the Joey she had built up in her mind and the Joey she knew weren't the same person.
It delves into her naivete, her belief in him, that she never sees the signs that he was hiding something. To be fair, for an outsider like a reader it would be fairly easy to see what was happening, but as someone who has seen such things happen in real life, I can assure you it is very difficult to spot what it wrong when you are close to the person. The writer makes a good effort towards that - establishing how their friendship was, what they mean to each other, how the actions of one could hurt the other. The story lets the characters be fallible, to be unsure of things like a kid should be, to be trusting as you can be at that age. Those were the best parts of the book.
On the flip side, though, I felt besides the characters, the plot didn't have much going for it. I thought it might be a mystery, but it really wasn't. The fact is that, though there is an unreliable narrator, you can pretty much guess what happened in the start itself, leaving nothing to mystery. There was a death, and the cops are pretty laidback about it - no one is barricading the path to the cliff or what not. Aren't the parents worried some other kid will try that dangerous dive? But just a few weeks later, our characters are waltzing up there again. The romance part, itself, I felt was a bit rushed, considering she was just moving on from her long-term relationship. I know it was to give it a happy ending, but in this case, an open-ended one could have also worked. The story had to be about them healing, understanding and moving on, after all.
Overall, I would say this is an emotional book, written nicely and great for fans of contemporary.
