Description

Every child of Eden fears the Red Death. All those afflicted with the plague die young, their souls stripped away as punishment for ancient sins long forgotten. For centuries, Guardians have protected Eden from the Red Death by killing outsiders who stray too close. They must keep Eden a secret if they are to survive.

Seventeen-year-old Aaliss is a highly-trained and dedicated Guardian, but when her rather odd thirteen-year-old brother discovers a cure to the plague, her world is turned upside down. The discovery is a miracle, yet miracles are dangerous in Eden.

The corrupt, all-powerful High Priest brands Aaliss and her brother Wilky as traitors, forcing them to run. They seek refuge in the last place Aaliss thought she’d ever go—beyond the boundaries of Eden, and into the land of the Soulless. Here they must navigate a medieval world filled with witches, magic, and warrior kingdoms run by Elders who are only a few years older than her.

Aaliss yearns to return home to Eden, but she must protect Wilky at all costs. And when her heart tugs her deeper into the world of the Soulless, she questions everything she once believed, everything the Priests had taught her about those who live outside Eden—they are forever cursed, savage, soulless.

Has her soul been taken? Will she and Wilky fall victim to the Red Death, or might they die sooner in the center of a battle that threatens to tear apart the Soulless world? Or... might Aaliss finally find, against all odds, what her heart has yearned for all along?

Among the land ravaged by the Red Death plague we have a village named Eden which is completely isolated and hidden from the different zones. Eden is run by corrupted and power hungry priests who believe everyone outside their village to be soulless. One of the main characters was trained as a Guardian and patrols the surrounding zones to keep the Soulless from finding Eden. Thats until a deadly secret forces her to run off into the zone with her younger brother and risk the plague.

The story has quite a few main characters but I thought the different perspectives helped the pacing and kept things from getting boring. It also helped me understand both sides of the story and added a lot of depth to the plot. The characters motivation made sense and I rarely got frustrated with their decisions. All the characters were compelling and well developped. Their backstory was woven in without slowing down the plot. Theres a great family element and the little bit of romance that was perfect for this story.

This thrilling dystopian world had some awesome action. There was always something entertaining going on. There was a clear objective but the plot still had some twist I didnt see coming. The concept was fascinating and the story was written really well with all the different threads coming together. This story captivated me within the first couple chapters and the ending wrapped up wonderfully. I cant wait for the sequel. I would recommend this to any dystopian lover. Not to mention the cover is amazing and totally relates to the story.

I will also post it in my monthly wrap up and a book recommendation post. I hope this helps. Thanks for the review copy. Im really looking forward to the sequel.
