Honestly this is just a hilarious collection of the worst ways and things to happen while you break up with someone. This was just funny in a Oh-my-God-what-the-hell way. It will make you cover your mouth in horror while trying not to laugh at the same time.
Really cute book that I enjoyed., it is a topic we all face at least once in our life. Very well done, and I read it in one sitting. I loved the catoons!
This book portrays a hard thing like a breakup in a light-hearted approach. Reading this makes me feel happy to be single. Would make a perfect gift to single people on valentines day, and also to people who have ever had a breakup.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
Haha, absolutely brilliant book of breaking up stories. Short ones, longer ones, and all couples with illustrations. Recommended!
(Almost) everyone has been through it, breaking up. Some of the break ups go well, and some... well, I would say read this book. I had a great time reading this one. With some I was nodding along, I knew the feeling of the person. And some break ups... well, it was a bit hard to believe some really happened. Some were quite a bit messed up. Poor people who had to go through this.:(
But most of them were just hilarious to read, I even read a few out loud to my boyfriend who also was laughing at the silliness.
Yes, break ups are painful, but the author really did a great job to make them more fun, and hilarious, to alleviate the pain.
I loved that the break up stories varied in size. Some were short, just a few sentences, but some took a few pages! I am not sure if I would have enjoyed the book the same way had all the stories been long. And some stories just work better as short.
Then added with the break up stories we also have illustrations. Each of them was great and made me laugh even harder. The illustrations are a bit simple, but I didn't mind that at all. It fitted with the book perfectly.
Plus points go to the title!
So, all in all, I would recommend this one, and I hope that the author will be bringing out more of these books. I will definitely read them if she does!
A quick, cute and quirky little read based on real life break up experiences from a variety of people, illustrated with flair . The stories range from funny to sad and are sure to resonate with everyone who has ever been dumped, especially if it was handled badly. Fun to dip in and out of too, if you don't feel like reading it in one sitting.
Short but very funny book on breakups. Who can't relate at sometime or another. If you want some tips(Ha) or just want to relate to others in the same situation, this book is for you. Great little book!
This book was hilarious! I truly enjoyed it. Most of us at one time or another experience a break-up. This book has the stories of some of the worst or funniest ways to break up with someone. The pictures were cute, too. This was a fast read, and fun to read. Just read it!
Short, funny, sad, and entertaining. I can relate to this book and that's why I like it. If you’ve just been dumped, read this book. It will make you laugh a little bit.
Thank you to Netgalley for opportunity to read this book.
If you want a fun little dose of schadenfreude, this is the graphic novel for you. Less graphic novel and more "true confessions" about the worst breakups with playful artwork to emphasize each story. Another super-quick read, with plenty of "glad that wasn't me" giggles along the way.
I enjoyed this book. It's so relatable and led me to reminense about the past as we all have terrible/funny break up stories. This book starts off saying the stories are made possible because people are terrible, which is such an accurate statement. Really enjoyed this quick read, would recommend.
This was definitely fun! I really appreciated being able to feel so connected to other people through their embarrassment and heartache and amusement. I'd definitely recommend this to my friends!
Hilarious but I recommended changing the format of the first letter to not be after the pictures. I constantly missed it and wondered where each story began and ended.
This book is strangely hilarious. I love that these are all true stories, I love the artwork that goes with each story and I love that this book has made me realise that not everything is as bad as it seems at the time. I fell in love with this book right away and I'm actually going to go buy my own copy now because I love it so much.
I had an early morning bus journey and wanted something super light to read. The stories themselves range between hilarious to merely tragic and some of them made my stomach curl in embarrassment and shame. We all have a bad breakup story and the collaborative nature of the book is good- different perspectives and stories, from the simple two line deal to longer paragraphs. The images do add a little joy to the stories but don't really interpret much or add to the humour of the stories themselves.
This was worth a half hour of reading time and I did get some enjoyment from it, but I wouldn't recommend it too heavily- it's funny, but it's very short and reads more like a series of one liners than anything else. On the whole it reminded me of the 'embarrassing letters' section of magazines I read when I was a teenager.
This book is really entertaining to read! It's not a laugh out loud or hilarious, but it's really entertaining reading other's people experience! I also really like the illustrations, so simple yet perfectly captures the story related to it.
This is a really cute book with good stories and a funny picture to go with each one. I don't think someone who has just broken up with someone would want to read bad breakup stories, but I've never really broken up with anyone. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the time I spent reading this book, even if it is a short read due to the pictures accompanying each story. Would I buy it with actual money?
I kept thinking of scenarios where this would be an appropriate gift for anyone I knew, and even if they had just been broken up with they could just go on the whisper app for these kind of confessions. Or tumblr. Instagram, even.
The only thing making this book different from the free content on the internet are the pictures that go along with each story. So what it comes down to is this: Is the art in this book worth thirteen dollars?
My answer is: no, perhaps not. But if it becomes available on kindle to buy for a few dollars, it'd be worth a buy.
This book is full of short true break up stories and simple corresponding cartoons. At first glance, I didn't think much of it, but after reading for a few minutes, I couldn't stop. I was almost late for work because I kept wanting to read just one more. Many are ridiculous and most are funny. I continued to feel relieved that I did not have these experiences. It was definitely worth my time and gave me a few laughs which made my day better.
The old saying goes that breaking up is hard to do and this book shows some of the most ridiculous and funny ways that people have broken up with the significant other. The author and illustrator of the book asked the public to give her their stories of how they were broke up with somebody or how their significant other broke up with them. I enjoyed the premise of this book and the illustrations were quite funny. I look forward to looking at other works from this author. I would recommend this to anyone who has ever had a bad breakup or knew someone who has.
This book is a collection of bad breakup stories. They were very entertaining. One boy broke up with his girlfriend in middle-school so he could spend more time with his dog. One girl received a break-up letter on a floppy disc (this was in 2006, past the floppy-disc era). I think my favourite one was that a boy broke up with his girlfriend because Jesus told him to.
I liked the pictures in the book. They were simple sketches, but they represented the ridiculous stories perfectly!
This book is a cute, short read. It would be great for someone going through a bad break up, because it would show them that (hopefully) other people have gone through worse break ups!
This review will be posted on April 27, 2017.
This short book is a compilation of breakup vignettes alongside the cartoon image that Campbell imagined should accompany it. Some of the breakups are nothing short of ridiculous... others shared the whiplash moments of, "What just happened? Was that real life?"
It was a quick read--it just left me feeling "ehh. Breaking up is hard."
I thought the premise of the book would be fun, especially since the introduction gave the impression, to me, that the stories would be more from the perspective of the one who was not "terrible" (Campbell's word) rather than from the perspective of the, well, terrible is too kind. I don't want to hear the story from the side of the a-hole then have a cutesy cartoon (to make them feel better? I dunno.). Not to mention some of the stories appeared to be fabricated (I don't mean by Campbell, I mean by the people giving her the stories) and far too convoluted to be real. Maybe I'm wrong but either way those stories (the ones I think are false and the ones from a-holes) made the book as a whole a disappointment for me.
To be fair, some of the stories and the accompanying cartoon were very funny. The harsh break-ups were easier to take when they were done by middle school and high school kids as compared to "adults."
While I would still recommend the book but with the warning that there are some stories that are not funny, cute or even groan-inducing and the cartoons can't redeem those. But the cartoons are cute and for the most part adds to or even compensates for the stories they represent.
Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.
A fun, quick read. Some of the stories were pretty funny, others fairly run-of-the-mill. The cartoons were cute but not especially funny or necessary to drive home the points of the stories.
This book includes little vignettes of pretty awful break-ups written by other people, with accompanying comics/drawings by the book's author. I can see this being a funny read long after the end of a relationship (if you're morbidly curious like I am), and some of the comics made me laugh out loud. But probably don't read this while the wounds are still fresh. Some of these break-up stories are truly awful, and some of them are even told by the truly awful people who perpetuated them, and they WILL make you angry.
<i>"Everyone says you're a great guy."</i>
This short book combines comedic tragic stories of breakups alongside cute cartoons.
Great fun.
<i> "After all this time with you, I'm still waiting to meet that guy they're talking about."</i>
This is another case of the title being what the book is about. Surprise. This is a little book of bad break up stories. Ones where there were misunderstandings. Ones where there was hurt. Ones that were cute, and ones that are sad.
Most of the stories have a little cartoon associated with each story.
This is not a sit down and read all the way through. This is more of a bathroom book, for quickly getting in and out, and coming back to later. Nothing wrong with that.
Thanks o Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley, Animal Media Group LLC, and Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell for the chance to read and review this ARC;
This book was a rip-roaring and heart-paining rollercoaster from the word go. You'll find yourself laughing and wincing as you turn every page, delighted in the art and finding yourself kith and kin to the people in the stories. I found myself thinking of my own breakups and seeing my own choices in those on the pages, both confessions of how people had broken up with others and how they had been dumped by others.
I definitely will purchase a copy of this when it comes out and I hope there are more stories that still get submitted from the contact info at the end of the book, so that there will be even more pieces to read once it is published.
If you love reading about crazy and funny true breakups at all ages with drawings that show the breakup, this is the book for you. I loved how right to the point the breakups were. They were each only a paragraph or three long with a hilarious drawing of the breakup, but these breakups were unusual and very entertaining. There were breakups with pregnancy scares, game boys thrown at heads, and one that even caused two heart attacks, yes two! This was just really fun to read. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a good laugh.
Love does strange things to us and most have experienced the hardship of a break up at any age. The book is a collection of real life stories depicting the humorous side of a relationship split. .I particularly liked the one where the guy asked for his gift back, which turned out to be black lingerie! It is a short and easy read, maybe helpful if you have been in the situation and the cartoons which accompany the stories are cute and funny.
Short, funny book on how realign ships were ended. Some are hilariously funny. My favorite was the lady who had her things delivered to her office and her boss stepping over her undies. Cute hand drawn pics, but some of them were kind of childish looking. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
This was not what I expected. I think I was expecting more commentaries to the stories. Like "That sure was bad, this is how you should have done it..." or "You think that was bad, imagine if it had happened like this...".
But still, it was a funny book. It make strange breakups look a lot more normal, and the normal not so bad after all. It is a quick book I think I would have enjoyed if I happened to be in a bad breakup which would be hard to get over.
The cartoons where nice and quirky (in a good way), but I would like to see them take more space in the book. Some of the stories could have had more than just one picture.
Full of heart, laughter and reality. A refreshing, thoroughly hilarious book that follows the stories of people who went through awful break-ups while the amazing cartoonist, Hilary, captures the essence of that sorrowful experience effortlessly in a well-crafted and executed cartoon.
I loved the structure of the book; the typography and layout as well as how it went about with the stories followed by the cartoons made it easier to follow and read. The cartoons, the least to say, were aesthetically pleasing, beautiful and utterly appropriate - amazingly in sync with every reminisced break-up story. I did not found any that didn't narrate the story itself.
The stories were real. And that's all there is to explain - sad, terrible and hilarious, making you bury all hopes of ever being in a decent relationship, but real. I wanted some to be longer, more detailed so that I could connect better but at the end of the day, I respected other people's experiences - if they wanted to write three lines about their break-up then that's what we should get to read.
Overall, a super short, humorous, very realistic and cute (in a weird way) book, filled with positivity and an important message: Get rid of terrible people in your life, the first chance you get!
A collection of true anecdotes about people breaking up. From the weird to the "well I guess it's been time" this illustrated book will amuse you for a couple of hours.
I found this very funny, and the illustrations were a nice touch. Ideal fun book to give someone for a break up, it cheered me up and made me glad I wasn't on the dating scene anymore!
I was drawn to this book after having read Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up a little while back, and thought ‘hey, why not?’ This collection of anonymous stories made me giggle and guffaw more than a few times, as it took on the form of those ridiculous whisper confessions, and the illustrations that accompanied each story were just as cute.
My main complaint with this title is that while it is listed under comics and graphic novels, or as sequential art, the illustrations are neither sequential nor do they form a graphic novel. When I first selected the title I was expecting the stories to be completely translated into comic form (which would have been hilarious) rather than being accompanied by a single vignette. Don’t get me wrong, the stories were funny and the artwork spot on – but I would have preferred something that strayed a bit further away from single pane/ editorial comics. Was if fun? Sure! But there was way more that could have been done with these stories for them to be marketed as genuine comics and the collection as a graphic novel.
Would I recommend this book? Of course! It’s funny, relatable, and the perfect little book to leave places where it can be picked up and put down in a short amount of time. Campbell’s comic interpretation really adds to the experience, and reminded me more than a little of Bizzaro and Off the Mark. And, to be quite honest, it could easily be compared to the Bro Code bathroom readers in terms of humour and application.
If you are looking for something refreshing, and need a break from whatever you might be doing I highly recommend you to pick up this book. It took me 1 hour and a half to finish it, and it lightened up my whole day and made me laugh out-loud.
The stories that Hilary included and the art she made highlighted the comical side of the break up and I love them for how awesome they are.
Best break up lines so far
"I swear I'm really busy. I can show you my calendar if you want"
"...Jesus came to him in a vision and told him I was a whore."
3 stars. I loved the premise of the book and its design, but I felt it could have been better. The cartoons were adorable but the stories were just okay. Not as funny as I'd hoped but did get a few giggles out of me.
Sooo funny. There are so many relatable stories!! Even though I am single and anyone have never broken up with me like that, I found it really interesting.
I absolutely loved this book, it is amazing and unique. I found this book very special, and I think that I will definitely re-read this one when someone will break up with me just to laugh after crying. And the illustrations were amazing, too! So accurate.
I recommend this book to everyoneee!!
I giggled my way through this light hearted read. A great quick pick up & put down book of the confessions of breaking up and being dumped.
There is solidarity to be found in reading the stories of other people's break-ups. It's the feeling that you are not wrong in thinking that there are many terrible people in the world. You're absolutely right in your assumptions as Campbell explains in the preface. This is just a story highlighting the actions of those terrible people.
A funny compilation of ridiculous and disturbing breakups! I enjoyed it.
This book is a collection of breakup stories that vary from sad to truly outrageous, coupled with some casual illustrations to really hammer the issue home.
"He threw a Gameboy at my head" ~ my favourite line
I can't really think of a single situation in which reading this book would be comforting, not even in a 'at least you weren't broken up with like this' capacity but it was a really interesting read all the same - we all love the sordid details so we can wince at some of the shittiest breakups. The one thing we can take from this book, however, is DON'T BREAK UP WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS OR YOU WILL END UP IN A BOOK.
Laugh out loud stories of heartbreak (or relief!). Really good fun - easy to read and very entertaining.
From the description: "Anonymous break up stories from men and women, old and young, serious and silly and the cartoons that inspired them. Author and artist Hilary Campbell turns the painful into the hilarious, validating emotions from forgotten middle school tragedies to relationships that ended only hours ago."
Cambell truly did collect a myriad of stories that offer a great variety of horrible breakups...many of which make you go "Wow, at least I haven't been dumped that way." The cutesy illustrations to go with them are perfectly fitting as well. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO is a kitschy little book that serves its purpose perfectly. It's a brief distraction and a reminder that it so could have been worse.
It was a nice quick and fun read. I really enjoyed this short story collection and it was interesting to see how weird people get when they break up and all the different ways they did it in.
This book is a great read on different ways people have been dumped which I thought was hilarious and sometimes a bit sad for the dumpee . The drawings on each page add an extra sad depth to the article and really finishes the book off.
This book masterfully reframes break ups in a way that turns heartbreak into laughter. It's totally relatable and fun to read!
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But You Could've Done Better is a graphic novel full of break up stories with little cute cartoons. These stories are from high school kids to adults.
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But You Could've Done Better is such a funny, hilarious and amazing book. I really enjoyed reading all those break up stories and if there's going to be a part 2, I'll definitely read it! Some stories were so weird, like who would break up by saying that Jesus showed him that his girlfriend is a whore. Like, what?? And others were really sad.
Hilary Campbell is by the way amazing! She had an amazing dedication:
“To that one dude, for being such an inspirational dick.”
You go girl! I cannot wait to read more written by Hilary Campbell and highly recommend Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But You Could've Done Better if you're looking for an easy and funny read!
I never thought I'd enjoy the stupidty of other people's reason when it comes to breaking up. This is a fun light read book for those who needs a quick read or just read an emotionally draining novel. It's light, it's funny, and it's amusing. Plus there is a cool illustration that points out the highlight of each short stories.
I am going to be honest, I requested this book only because of the title without knowing anything about it.
Best decision ever.
This book is a recollection of ugly break-up stories and definitely worth reading. I recommended it to some friends and one of them actually read it and loved it.
My conclusion: some crappy people can make a great book.
Kuddos to Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell for this piece!
Published 10th Jan. 2017 by Animal Media Group LLC with illustrations by Hilary Campbell, this collection of simply illustrated awful break-up stories will make you wince and hopefully smile some. The author/illustrator's stated purpose (after declaring that people are straight up generally terrible) was that by sharing stories we share experiences and lessen the sadness and hopefully share some humor. The stories run the complete gamut from first grade playground dumpage to full on live-in-partner horribleness. There were many of these that made me groan out loud.
It's a simple and short book, full of shared misery. I can definitely see this as being a good 'Ben&Jerry's + friends TV binge watching + book' after a good friend gets dumped (and you knew the boyfriend was a complete idiot all along).
Three stars for art and concept. Definitely worth a look.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
It was a fast read and it's nice to know other people have dumb breakups
This book is a collection of funny break up stories told by various people. There are some absolutely hilarious ones, but there are also ones that I didn't find all that funny.
It is a good book to just relax and get some laughs. You can basically start from anywhere and won't miss out anything. You can also skip any story that didn't appeal to you.
All in all, funny little book that won't take much of your time.
The illustrations were very cute and the breakup stories made me laugh. It's always good to know you aren't the only one who's had a bad relationship or breakup!
A quick, fun read with some great illustrations. This is the perfect book to read in one sitting. A very interesting collection of break-ups, some of which shocked me and others made me laugh.
Better as a wen series than as a book, but a good compilation nonetheless.
The stories were somewhat entertaining. It's a good concept, but I've read better stories on Thought Catalog.
This is a short and quirky collection of various breakups people experienced. It was funny at times, sometimes a bit sad, relatable to anyone who experienced a bad breakup (don't we all), with cute illustrations for each story. All in all not that special, but I enjoyed reading it.
This book is amusing and surprisingly uplifting. Break ups can be awful, but there is often a funny side, and we survive. The drawings were cute too.
Amusing cartoons illustrating various ways people have ended romances. The drawings are clever and take the sting away from the insensitive ways people treat each other,
Sassy and occasionally bitter chicken soup for the soul. This breakup anthology is both relatable and cringe worthy. I did expect more illustrations, I thought that it would be more like a graphic novel, but instead it reads like a children's chapter books for adults. There is one page illustration for every story rather than a graphic novel /comic style depiction on each story. Overall it was a light fun read, but I expected more illustrations.
Before going to the therapist post breakup, consider reading this book first. The drawings are hilarious! The stories themselves are funny and the idea of how the drawings are drawn are very creative. It reminds you that you're not the only one dealing with a broken heart.
A lovely funny book with loads of stories about the end of relationships. Most of the stories are only a page or two and are accompanied by really good illustrations.
A cute little book. Good illustrations, and a blend of some funny and some kind of bland breakup stories.
This was a cute, quick read on a topic that many of us can relate to-- break-ups. The stories had me intrigued enough to read them all in one sitting! And the illustrations sprinkled throughout were the icing on the cake. I would have loved for the book to have included more stories, but I enjoyed nonetheless. I just felt like there could have been more of something.
This was kinda funny. And there were some amazing quotes.
<i>He threw a Gameboy at my head</i> stands out among them.
The stories are definitely relatable.
Some of the cartoons were hilarious and on point. But sometimes the cartoons over-explained the stories. It may have been funnier to just see the pictures. And maybe read the backstory if you wanted to.
But the Jesus cartoon was pretty damn funny.
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But You Could've Done Better is a compilation of real-life break-up stories, each story accompanied by amusing illustrations that helps assuage the awkwardness and/or anguish associated with break-ups.
I found the compilations both weird and funny at the same time. I could understand some stories, but others I thought were so weird, it was a little hard to understand they were real, actual stories that happened to real people!. Kudos to Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell for finding humor within these stories through her illustrations.
Overall, they were certainly entertaining, and I finished reading the book in one sitting!
I received a copy of this novel from the Publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This book was just okay for me. I might have just built it up in my head too much. The break-up stories featured were funny, sad, tragic, and all in between. This book features multiple stories and drawings, and while it wasn't my cup of tea, maybe it's yours.
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this and the artwork is so cool.
Some of the stories definitely made me smile. Most of them were quite entertaining, but not so outlandish that you would wonder about their authenticity. The art is quite clever, but I disliked that some of the stories were split up by them. All in all I would say that this would be perfect for a train ride or a quick pick me up.
Thanks to Netgalley and Animal Media Group for the opportunity to review this book.
This is a fabulously different way to summarise feelings upon relationship breakup. A compilation of experiences, interspersed with cartoons and they’re good cartoons.
It’s very American in its examples, however, for anyone who has experienced a breakup (and that’s us all, yes)? This is for you / me / all of us!
Enjoy!
Finished this book in one sitting as it was very hilarious
[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Net Gallery/Animal Media Group. All thoughts and opinions are my own.]
Most people have experienced the pain of a breakup, sometimes in ways that were particularly comical or tragicomical, and for such people who want to share their embarrassing experiences and put a humorous light on them to take the sting out of the experience, this book is a hilarious and unsurprisingly awkward tour of user-submitted stories. As might be imagined, the author was inspired to start this as a blog project from her own breakup experiences, and guessed correctly that there would be plenty of other people whose experiences with love and romance have been particularly awkward [1]. The result is a book that does allow for a laugh among people that places their own awkward experiences in a context that shows that others have it just as bad if not worse, which is hard for some of us to manage given the disastrous nature of our own relationships. At the very least, a book like this encourages us to believe that our misfortune in love is at least not our fault alone, if at all, whether or not that is accurate.
This book is organized in a pretty simple and straightforward fashion. First comes a story about some sort of awkward and botched breakup and then there is a drawing of some kind that shows it in a humorous light. The stories and drawings are the stars of this show, and names have been changed to protect the identity of the guilty as well as the (relatively) innocent. Included in this story are cowardly breakups by phone or text, a lot of cheating partners whose behavior is uncovered in unusual ways, breakups that are followed by regret and failed attempts at reconciliation, such as when someone is called a model who ends up being a kleptomaniacal stripper. Some of the breakups are from people who are young, sometimes older, but in all cases something clearly went wrong. Some of the more poignant experiences are attempts at scaring someone into intimacy through pregnancy that do not go well or times where someone has spent a great deal of effort to make a long distance relationship work only to find out that the other person wasn't putting in the effort. In some cases one of the partners wanted a more serious partner and the other one just wanted to keep it casual, with inevitable heartbreak.
Yet even though this is a lighthearted book that takes heartbreak as an opportunity to create beautiful drawings as well as tell humorous stories, there are deeper elements to the book as well. One of the darker elements of the book is the way that our longings tend to push us into intimacy, and that often our feelings our engaged when our bodies are engaged, despite the fact that the time and situation may not be ideal. Our attempts at making a clean break from the past may be hindered by our regrets or the fact that we were a good enough partner that someone else would regret no longer being with us. This is a book that reminds us that although we may laugh about our misguided attempts to hold on to people or the way that we or others may not have acted honorably in our relationships, that our attempts to laugh it off and shake it off do not mean that we cease trying to connect with other people no matter how we have been hurt before. Our optimism and the intensity of our longings tends to make us keep trying again, hoping, sometimes against hope, that this time we will get it right.

Don't tell me that this title didn't attract you. Certainly, it did, isn't it? :P I guess it is the title that attracted me too for requesting it in the first place. I got it actually last year, but I don't know why I waited so long to read such a small and funny book?
So this was really a short book. As you can gather the info from the synopsis that this is a collection of weird and funny stories that different people have sent to the author. She has also incorporated her illustrations into the stories.
What I Liked:
--------------------------
1) Great mix of stories: Well the stories were of all kind. Some were short, some were little longer, some were funny, some were weird and some felt really painful. I guess, (almost) everyone has gone through a breakup at least once. It is certainly not easy. Some breakups go well and end up smoothly and some.. well. Reading such collection made me laugh at few while made me sad for others. There were some stupid stories too and I was just thinking, can people even break up on this? Overall, the author has provided a mixed kind of stories which were fun to read.
2) Nice illustrations: After each story, the author has also provided the illustration of that story. They were quite good and funny. The illustrations were simple though but they perfectly match the stories.
3) The title: Wel, this has to be the biggest plus point for the book. The title is so catchy that it takes your attention instantly.
4) Unique idea and quick read: I like the overall idea of the book. It was very unique. Breakups are generally painful and with this unique and hilarious collection of that painful thing, the author has really done an incredible job. Also, the book was really short and quick read because of the writing style. The stories were presented like proses.
5) Best dedication ever: Trust me on this. The dedication of the book was the funniest one I have read to date. The dedication itself sets your mood for the further stories. Okay, you can also laugh. Here it is:
"To that one dude,
for being such an inspirational dick."
What I didn’t like:
---------------------------------------
1) Some stories had bad drawing placement: Well this is not a that big point, but I guess it affected my reading flow in some places. This can totally be there because I had an ARC and they have corrected it in the final book? Maybe, but here, in some stories, the illustration was placed in between a story, often in the middle of a sentence and the rest started after the drawing. This was somewhat annoying.
2) Not a special writing style: Okay so this can be the overall idea of the author- taking the stories from people and adding them as it is. It felt as if no effort was made by the author in incorporating those stories.
3) Wanted some stories to be a little longer: As I said earlier that this was a good mix of short and long stories, but there were a few for which I wanted a little longer version.
Final Thoughts:
----------------------------------
Overall, this book was quite enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this. It was an unexpected read for me. If you are looking to read some weird and funny stories, pick it up. Or if you are planning a holiday, take it with you. Or if you just had a breakup and you want to read something that would make you laugh for a moment, just pick it up. A mix up for short and long stories, this will definitely paste a smile on your face and will make you think that yeah, weird people do exist.
This book was hilarious. Anybody who has had, done or experienced a breakup, good or bad, will like this. I think it is a good book for fans of roz chast, kate beaton, allie brosh, sarah andersen or mimi pond.
A fun, quick read, some made me chuckle and some made me cringe. A cute little book if you are just getting over a breakup.
Review Well, this was a speed-read. I flipped through it within a couple of hours.
It is hilarious, there's no doubt about it. Perhaps a little more hyperbole wouldn't hurt. I would think breaking up could get sassier, and more creative, but these are real-stories so I guess people are not giving much thought to the horrible ordeal of breaking up. Nor would a greater variety and deeper insights into the context, although I do understand that part of the fun is to have micro-tales sans the context to judge. I'd still prefer the former.
Overall, a decent laugh was had.
Such a cute book about cringey and often hilarious break up moments. It’s relatable and a short read. The format was a little odd on my Kindle, but I was able to understand the flow. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Animal Media Group for allowing me to read and review this book.
Cute, newly published, graphic book on breaking up. Each small one page story is followed by a primitive picture depicting the breakup. Typically stories range from a first grade romance up through and including a number of college debacles. A few giggles in the bunch, a few frowns and a lot of memories.
Primitive drawings that hit the essence of its accompanying story. Easily read in one sitting. A debut book for a graphic artist with her own cartoon and column. Funny and good enough to be an artist to watch.
I really enjoyed this book and finished it within half an hour. It is really entertaining to read on how people broke up and why.
The stories were short and range from funny, wacky, crazy and just plain stupid and gives an insight on how relationships are in real life. People do crazy shit man for their relationship be it breaking up or attempting to make their partner stay.
And that is pretty much what I have got to say really. It's short and entertaining. I would definitely recommend it for people who just broke up or is attempting to rise from the dead and conquer their reading slump.
This is a cute book, full of funny, infuriating, and easily relatable anecdotes about dating. There is something within human nature that seems to compel us to hear about the mishaps of others, and take some sort of amusement in it. Everyone has that one partner that broke up with us over a text message, or a date that went horribly wrong, and those are stories that are fun to both hear and tell. This book is a nice coffee table reader, or for reading out loud to your friends for laughs. My major gripe was that the formatting of the book was a little difficult to read. Perhaps it was because it was an advance reader's copy, but the stylized format made it hard to tell where one story ended and another began, so some flowed together and I would be confused by the changes in tone or details. The little illustrations added a certain charm for the book. This would probably make a wonderful gift to a friend who just went through a breakup.
This book is a pleasant combination of humorous break-up stories and accompanying art. It's an enjoyable, fast read.
This was ok. Felt like a long form version of sites like FML or late night hashtag comedy. The formatting was kind of weird on an ereader but that might be fixed later.
Well, this was fun! I really appreciate this book, I just wish it was longer and maybe contained more diverse stories (from much younger/older people for example). It's a nice thing to skim through when you're having a tough time.
Hilarious read. Very recognizable situations, a few happened to me... Yes, i have dated a few shite men...
Definately a recomended read if you just broke up, the stories in this book prove, it could have been worse. (or, at best, others had similar bad break-ups...).
Also recomended to read, if you are single. Be glad you aren't involved with any of these characters...
And last, a recommended read, if you are in a happy relationship, just to remind you, how lucky you are, finding a nice partner :) .
This holarious little book is awesome and I really love the art style. Only complaint is it could have been longer.
This book is a collection of people's who was being dumped by their boyfriend/girlfriend. There are some funny stories that made me giggle a bit, but there are also some stories that kind of sad. I like the mixed of it.
I also love the illustrations :) It's so good.
Absolutely a great and quick read. The short stories really are such a wide variety, and really interesting. Always brings out a chuckle or two. Whether it be sad, cringe-worthy or hilarious, I enjoyed most of the stories. The drawings that come with it really adds to the reading experience. Would recommend to everyone, single or taken.
The book is a compilation of breaking up stories accompanied by cartoons. It is a quick read. Some of the stories are funny, some are just okay. The same thing with the cartoons - some are very clever and interesting, but some are just okay. Overall, it is a good weekend entertainment, if you, like me, find yourself bored with half an hour to spare in a rainy Sunday afternoon. At least it will make you smile :)
This book is hilarious! People are so weird. This is evidence.
Brief personal stories of bad break-ups, from a mild wince to absolutely cringe-inducing, that show a variety of experiences and how flawed humans can be when they interact with each other or end a relationship.
This was a very cute, fun read! It certainly served its purpose: if you've ever been dumped in a horrible or hysterical way, and need to feel better about it (or just a bit less alone), this book is for you!
This is a collection of hilarious break ups that will make you laugh out loud, so be careful not to read this in bed while your partner is sleeping or you could end up being the main charactet of the follow up of this brilliant book. One flaw? I somehow expected this to be a full comic, while I only found a few sketches here and there that did not build up the bulge of the book, and the art was not particularly appealing, but the rest of the content more than made up for this minor disappointment.
It's a small book of anonymous break up stories that range from elementary to college relationships. Stories have a small goofy comic that corresponds with the story.
I needed something light and kind of silly this fit the bill. Some of the stories weren't hilarious but definitely, "You could've done better" situations as the title states.
A funny collection of humorous, sad, and maddening break-up stories that I enjoyed reading in bits and pieces.
Quick and entertaining, the art didn't add all that much but the breakup stories were amusing (and sometimes appropriately horrifying) so I don't have a ton of complaints. It does what it sets out to do pretty well.
This is going to maybe sound awful, but this was really funny! I enjoyed reading this book and seeing all the funny comics that accompanied it! I needed a good laugh and this one won me over. I don't even know where to start with these. Brings back my youth and all the fun me and my friends had in the dating game. maybe a nice gift for someone who has just broken up with some one would appreciate a good laugh and let them know they aren't alone- we've all been ditched or have ditched someone- it's not the end of life!
Oh my god, people can be awful! hahaha
I'm glad I picked this book up. This was a very entertaining book, filled with hilarious and terrible break up stories. A very fast read, I would recommend it, especially if you've ever been dumped. It may help to put things in perspective :)
This was incredibly real and enjoyable to read. Break ups can be some of the worst experiences of someone’s life. This book gives a take on the most light hearted and heart breaking break ups, in short summaries. I loved reading this.
Believe me. This brought a smile to my face, as much as it made me reassess how I am as a person in love. Once in a while, we face a situation like this, and this books talks about the topic in the most creative way possible. It's a fun read!
This is a light, laugh-inducing read about other peoples breakups. The snippets will make you laugh, and the illustrations will make you smile. The only drawback I can see that the compilation isn't long enough (I read through this in less than 10 minutes).
Meh. I thought the concept was interesting and was looking forward to having some fun with break up stories... but it was all just meh. Some of the stories were crazy, but nothing made me laugh, or even smile, while reading them. It was all just sad and bothersome tales. I guess I was just looking for either some chicken soup level of meaning, or more fun, funny, laugh out loud art and stories. My expectation may have let me down, but again, the best word I have for it all is meh.
It is quite fun reading composed of different types of breakups. It didn't take so long to read the whole book. It is a perfect book for such moments when you are in a book slump, or got out of a relationship within a few months. If you are looking for something light and to cheer you up, this book is good for you!
You ever read those articles on Facebook that are like "10 People Describe BLANK SITUATION"
This is like that, but with some pretty cool art work.
It's always interesting to read things like silly reasons one person broke up with another over.
This graphic novel slash anecdote collection is in no way a breathtaking or ground-shaking read. It's an entertaining collection of breakup stories, which we all know can be a horrible affair, but with a humorous twist. The stories are accompanied by little sketches and drawings portraying the awkward or "no he didn't!"-moments of the breakups. Author Campbell herself found the action of seeing a sad situation in a funny/sarcastic light cathartic and made this collection to relieve some of the pain of other heartbroken people out there. Like I said, I didn't find this extraordinary in any way but it's an entertaining read and some of these breakup situations were unbelievable, I mean, there was a girl who got a Gameboy thrown in her face (what?!) and another who was dumped for not being latino (come again?!). If you're looking for a quick and quirky read in between books or to cure a reading slump, go for it!
Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of this title!

Thanks to #NetGalley for the review copy of Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.... All opinions are my own.
This book was a fun collection of break up stories. Some of them were pretty off the wall and made me laugh. Others were shocking. Almost every story got a reaction out of me.
This is a good book if you're looking for something quick and humorous. It's almost like reading something out of a magazine.

This was a truly hilarious description of the myriad of incredible ways people have broken off their relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope there is a second volume coming. Well done indeed, Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell. Highly recommended.
My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for my honest review.
A really funny and somewhat bittersweet collection of break up stories. Points of view of both those who have done the breaking up and those who have been broken up with. It´s a quick read but definitely entertaining. I definitely enjoyed it.
Love this collection of illustrated break-up stories. Be prepared to feel some schadenfreude and remember your own less-than-ideal break-ups.
One of the funniest, yet saddest books I've read this year. Who knew so many people could be so callous in breaking up?
This was a fun collection, a good reminder that most of us have been on both the giving and receiving end of not-so-thoughtful break ups. It's light with a few groaners. I enjoyed it. It's a good break book, good for a quick laugh or commiseration, a palate cleanser.
This is a collection of real-life breakup stories.
"This book didn't start out as a book. This started out as me crying on a freeway overpass in Brooklyn, moping around for some time, and thinking I'd better draw about this"
It contains simple drawings and blocks of text from different people sharing their breakup experiences.
Some random items that show up in the graphics are Game Boys, answering machines, and floppy discs which made me wonder about when some of these stories were collected or if the author wanted to show some throwback items.
The stories are straightforward and short. The entire book can be read in less than an hour. I recommend the book if you like simple, non-fiction breakup stories.
Received ARC via Netgalley
Still laughing over the hysterical illustrations and breakup lines. All of us can relate, unless you’re George Clooney! 5/5
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
#BreakingUpUsHardToDo #NetGalley
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC. This was a quick and entertaining read. It is a series of vignettes about breaking up. I recommend this charming collection.
Fast read and cute illustrations.
My rating scale:
5☆ - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc)
4☆ - I loved this book.
3☆ - I liked this book.
2☆ - I didn't really care for this book.
1☆ - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.
This book is hilarious and I love the cartoons. It's very relatable and entertaining. I would definitely recommend this book to friends
Hilarious, you may read something similar to a break you’ve been through or maybe one of a friend. Some are the funniest you may ever read. Fun read!!
The formatting of the collection didn't work too well with the kindle app on my phone. The stories were spaced weird and some ran together making it hard to determine where a new story started..
This was really funny and showed how terrible people can be.
Breaking up isn't just hard, it's also awkward, sometimes ridiculously funny, melancholic, and mostly always The Right Thing To Do. This was such a nice blend of funny and bittersweet! I definitely wish I could have read this when it so definitely applied to me. If you're going through a hard break up, or even just a bumpy road in your relationship, READ THIS.
Stories are really funny. Illustrations are amazing. I really enjoyed reading it. It was a hilarious and quick read.
Librarian: I might consider this one. I’ve found that kids invariably love collections of silly/obnoxious stories/facts. I’ll have to check if we have any on relationships.
Reader: A few minutes on the internet will produce hundreds (thousands) of articles exactly like this book. As such I wouldn’t buy a copy of it for myself. It is however still a fun sort of read, and clearly people do like it, or there wouldn’t be so many articles.
A quick graphic novel on terrible breakups people have had or have done told with comical pictures to go alongside the stories.
It's almost a weird insight on how horrible people can be, but at the same time the way that we (or the storytellers) have handled the breakups make it seem not so bad. In one, a girl is told her boyfriend no longer finds her attractive and wants the lingerie he gave her back - in which is appalling but at the same time was somehow made funny ??? You have to almost ask yourself "Who does this!?" but then you think back on your life and realize that, yeah, this is relatable.
I almost wish it were longer but short and sweet is completely acceptable in this case. Enjoyed!
Some of these stories will make you smile, giggle and generally shock you. I really enjoyed reading this and cannot wait to have a physical copy in my hands.
Want to lose your faith in humanity? Look no further... Breaking Up is Hard to Do... But You Could've Done Better by Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell is the perfect way to make you say "I'll never get into a relationship again." Breaking Up is Hard to Do is a compilation of crazy breakup stories. Once you finish this book you will be so glad you never had any of these experiences (or if you did, I pity you). Definitely recommended for anyone who is recently single.
I usually like reading books similar to <i>Breaking Up is Hard to Do... But You Could've Done Better</i>, basically books of lists or collections of short vignettes. That's what drew me to this title along with the fact that nearly everyone has been through a break-up whether on the receiving or the delivering end. There was a nice collection of various individuals who had been through a break-up at some point in their life from former high school sweethearts to grade-school puppy love that wasn't to be.
Some of the individuals that did the breaking up also acknowledged when they were hurting their former significant other, and while I respect that, I'm sure there was a better way to go about it. Then again, that's part of the title, too, so fairly accurate. I was kind of hoping there was more graphic novel to the collection, especially since I found it listed under that genre. There were some illustrations that went along well with their respective vignette, but I just wanted more.
Overall, this was an good collection.
This is a collection of short stories about peoples break-ups. I found it funny, and also very relatable! I did like the illustrations. It is a great book to grab when you want to read something not very deep but fun!
I afored this book! It was light and entertaining,
I will reread it when I need a giggle. Thank for the opportunity to review it.
This book was very fun to see all the horrible ways people end a relationship. some were tragic and others were too funny not to laugh.
Really cute book of stories & cartoons regarding breakups.... relatable & cathartic! I really liked the artwork & will look up more of Campbell's work! A short, fun, quickly read book....this will make you feel good, & put a smile on your face! Yep, highly recommend it!
I received this e-book from NetGalley, in return for my own fair & honest review.
This collection of break-up stories was both funny and sad at the same time. Just more proof that some people are giant piles of burning garbage. I did enjoy the artist's interpretations of the stories though some of the drawing were a little kitschy.
This was 150 pages of funny break up stories, with illustrations at the end or middle of each story.
Some of them I liked, some of them not really, but overall it was a good book.
I enjoyed this short easy read. The artwork and pictures really gave the stories more character and there were a few times that I laughed out loud. You can not go into this book thinking that you will get a satisfying read. I know that it is a compilation of breakup stories, but I do wish there had been more/longer stories to read.
This was a very fast read for me. As someone who has been dumped, I enjoyed other peoples stories of pain. Some of the stories were funny, but some were downright mean.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has dating troubles or just a enjoys reading.
Breakups are rough. There's the crying, the ice cream, the wondering how you could possibly have nearly married someone who thought it was reasonable to cheat with a cocktail waitress because she bailed him out of jail for a DUI (yep that story is in here).
From the totally understandable reasons for breaking up with someone ("I wanted to spend more time with my dog") to the totally outrageous reasons for being dumped ("Jesus came to him in a vision and told him I was a whore"), the stories here are funny, sad, and sometimes really, really, really weird.
The illustrations themselves aren't really all that impressive but it's still an interesting, quick read if you want a little laugh, especially if you need a little pick-me-up to know that you're not alone and that someone else has also dated someone who threw a temper tantrum because they dared to go to the gym, only to come home to find their significant other had packed their things and moved out (yep, that one actually happened to me folks...good riddance!).
This book had a cute quirk to it. Well, as cute as you can get when you’re a kinda sloppily drawn book about break-ups. This book reminds me way too much of the old FML website and all those Bustle and Buzzfeed articles about people and their tragic stories. So in this day and age, this book is remarkably unoriginal. But did I still have a fun time reading this and laughing/cringing at other people’s expense? Yes. Yes I did.
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But You Could've Done Better by Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell is a must-have book. We have all been there, on either side of the breakup, we are either the brokenhearted or the cause of the broken heart. This book shares some messed up, hilarious, leave you speechless type of break up stories. Real stories, as in people actually are telling you the ways they've been broken up with.
You don't even have to be going through a break-up to enjoy this book. I loved it and laughed from beginning to end. It helps you remember that laughter can cure all, even a broken heart.
Quick read! This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting.
That to says the stories listed were entertaining, some brutal, but overall it was the illustrations that were my favorite part. Might be something fun to get a friend going through a bad breakup.
Breaking up is the worst thing ever. For those who have gone through, or have seen someone else go through it, then you know this. There is a lot of screaming and crying, hurling of insults and objects which can cause damage. This is the case for most unless you are in that group of people who manage to have a calm-let- us- be- friends kind of breakup.
If that is the case then good for you. Personally I like to be a little dramatic.
As the title suggests, this book is inspired by different people's breakup stories. Each story is followed up by a (related) funny illustration by the author. I was sold on this book by the title but the author's dedication didn't hurt either.
<i>"To that one dude, for being such an inspirational dick."</i>
The stories in this book albeit interesting were a testament to how awful people can be to each other. I get it though, you don't want to be nice to this other person. If you were such a fan of theirs you wouldn't be leaving them. But the stories in this book? I agree with the author, breaking up may be hard, but we could always do better. Of course, it is easier said than done.
***I recommend this book because it will make you feel better about your breakup. If not, at least you'll have something to read over the weekend
Got this book courtesy of NetGalley.
I'm not sure I'd say it's a book, more like long Bored Panda post. Never the less, it's a fun read, the illustrations are cute, and most of all - we can all relate to those savage break-up shit, right? Highly recommended!
The stories in this graphic novel were both funny and varying degrees of cringe worthy. It could have done without the illustrations and instead included more stories, though.
A short book filled with hilarious stories on breakups which most people can relate to. Recommend to anyone looking for a good laugh.
I received my ARC from NetGalley and Animal Media Group in exchange for an honest review.
I hate to say that this unique book is hilarious because it's literally filled with heartbreak - but it is! I see it as the perfect gift (along with a bottle of wine and massive chocolate bar) to a friend who's just been through a breakup - but only AFTER they've gotten over the worst of it! 4 out of 5 wine glasses.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
The author has collected break-up stories from the public and drawn cartoons to illustrate each story. For some of the cartoons, I didn't quite get why they went with their story. If you like reading about terrible break-ups, you will enjoy this book.
Quick fun read. The stories reminded me of many of my high school “romances” and brought back memories of the joy of dating and ending relationships. There is a place to submit stories and I have a couple I might share
The formatting on the kindle was @ little odd. First letter of new stories often appeared on the page before.
I feel like my feelings about this book are balanced out to middle. A bit indifferent. I wouldn't say it wasn't funny at all, but I haven't laughed out loud once. The little stories kept my attention, though, so I wouldn't say it wasn't worth reading it. They were okay. Anti-climatic at some times, right-out mad at others - they did seem like things that happen occasionally to all of us. I could write a couple of stories like them and I'm sure most of us could. For the little time I was reading this book, it kept my interest and I found the illustrations cute. They are not brilliant or hilarious, though. I think it will be forgettable, but it was a nice one time read.
I gave it 3 stars out of 5, according to NetGalley's rating, as in maybe I recommend it. I'm sure some people might like it more than I did and some will not like it as much. Try it to figure out which one is you! ;)
I liked this book because the stories were original and funny. The cartoons in this book were so cute and the stories were so funny. I would recommend this to anyone for a quick read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Wow, this was fun, not long......some Oh jaw-dropping moments. Fun art, and a BIG laugh. Sometimes we all need to laugh and that I did.
This book is friggin awesome. I loved it so much.
It was hilarious and analytical. Especially told how much of jerks people can be.
Thanks netgalley for granting me an opportunity to read and review this copy
With colorful, funny and cute drawings we have "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do... But Yo Could've Done Better."
Who haven't went through that bad break up you don't even want to talk about, or those horrible ones that while not funny on that moment, as the time passes you see the fun and the slightly better perspective you have now. This is what we have with this book. People's break up stories, from how they broke up or tried to break up with their significant others (from back in middle school to college and adult life) and how they were dumped. Mixed with art from Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell!
Nicely done and a easy read.
This is a really funny collection of short breakup stories, and I liked it a lot. A breakup is generally painful, sad, and sometimes a mess, whether you’re dumping someone or you’re the one being dumped by your (now ex-)significant other, but the author manages to make you laugh all the way through her book, starting with the dedication, in which she writes :
To that one dude, for being such an inspirational dick.
From « the guy who throws his gameboy at his ex when she dumps him » to « the one that demands she give him back the underwear he got her as a gift », all 100 pages of breakup drama have their own cute little illustration, and even though some of those don’t add a lot to the story in itself, they do add to the humor in the harsher breakups.
All those stories come from different people, which explains the slightly different tones between the various texts, but the drawings serve a double purpose here, and help the author give to this collection a feeling of consistency.
A critic could be made that the premise of the book is a pretty simple one, and that it doesn’t require much effort (or time) to read it, but if you’re looking for something light and fun to read on a sad, rainy day, this is the book you want !
Disclaimer: I received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
We read break up stories and they make us sad but this one is the opposite. I do not know whether is this because the stories are really funny or the situation is so absurd that laughing is the only thing you can do. The doodles were connected to the stories and make the, more humorous and light. The weird break up stories will make you think that people really are horrible sometimes. Some of the stories will make you shake your head and will make you ask, "What?!?" (yep, like the minion meme).
I read the book in an hour. I received the e-book in a Kindle format and it's not formatted yet as it was published. The title is fitting because the stories told and illustrated could have been handled better. I like that the book is unique in a sense. Also, the published stories are not restricted to heterosexual relationships but there are LGBT+ stories, as well.
All in all, I like the book. I recommend it to people who would like a few laughs at the absurdity of some break up stories, who would like to cheer themselves up after a disastrous break up and would like to feel that they are not alone.
Cute, simple, funny, a very quick read. I enjoyed the hour I spent reading it, but I felt like it could have gone further with different styles of drawings and narratives.
This book was great!! For anyone that has ever been dumped or dumped someone else in a ridiculous way, you need to read this book.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Super entertaining read. A collection of break up stories sent in from a bunch of different people anonymously, and Hilary Campbell drew comics to illustrate each story which in my opinion was the best part. I chuckled quite a bit. Some stories brought back memories of personal experiences and some stories I was left thinking WTF!
I loved the idea and set up of this book. I swung back and forth to funny and OMG what the heck? The art was good but ill-placed. It didn't fit in some places. While some parts were chuckle-worthy some were cringe-worthy.
I found the stories to be really interesting and would have read a longer book of break up stories. I didn't particularly find the illustrations brought a lot to the stories but I did not think they were a distraction and they were pretty good. It was a quick, fun read.
I received this arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
In this book, Hilary Campbell documents and illustrates various anonymous breakups. While some are poignant, most are humorous. Some stories are a few sentences, while others are over a page. Considering readers will find joy in the suprise of the stories, I won’t elaborate on any of the tales, but the Harry Potter breakup was my favorite.
My only complaint is that I wish the book was longer, since I greatly enjoyed the stories and illustrations.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick laugh.
'Breaking Up is Hard To Do...But You Could've Done Better' by Hilary Campbell is a collection of terrible breakup stories that some illustrations have been added to.
Breaking up is never easy, and things can go really wrong. This collection tells stories of how wrong it can go sometimes. Break ups where a Game Boy is thrown at someone, or someone is dumped but then dates a very similar girl are thankfully not common, but bad things do happen to people during breakups.
This book is darkly humorous, and the stories are so bizarre. Perhaps there is comfort in numbers, so having something like this to read at a bad time might help the reader feel better. The illustrations are cute and help to show sometimes how weird things can look or sound.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Animal Media Group and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
It was a fun and easy read, with a bunch of stories that made me giggle a bit.
It isn't a book I will ever read again, but it was enjoyable.
This his book was hilarious and surprisingly, made me feel better. To me, this is a weird kind of self-help book. It was a light read, the stores were funny but overall I was surprised to see how relationships can go wrong, with so many people.
I don't know why but I feel good and relieved after reading this. The book comes with bite-sized real-life breakup stories accompanied by cartoons. The cartoons are the fun part. Thanks to the writer for writing this book. Really lucky to receive the arc from NetGalley.
I was sent this book by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! It is written in the forms of letters, messages, and cartoons. It made me laugh and feel for all of the people who submitted their stories for this book. Breaking up is hard and there are better ways to do it than the ways shown in this book. I think that this is a book everyone can relate to and can get something out of, even if it is just a laugh and escape from reality.
I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
I have mixed feelings about this graphic novel -- but maybe that is the point! Some stories were funny. Other stories were just okay...but I found myself thinking in both cases, OMG did that really happen to you / did you really do that!?
If you are looking for a short, fast, cute, and funny read, I would suggest this book.
This book is fun full if stories of those who could have done better at breaking up. We've all done it! This book would make a cute gift for someone as well.
