Description
Greg, a married man, has been having an affair for three years with another man's wife. One evening, after a fight with her at their rented love nest, he storms out. When he returns an hour later she is dead. Did he kill her in a fit of rage and blank it out, or did someone else do it while he was out of the building?
Detective Superintendent Roy Grace of the Sussex Police, assigned to the case, soon discovers that there is more than one person who had a reason to kill her. But only one man has the most to lose - and when his marriage and career are at stake, what lengths will he go to protect all that he holds dear? And what will he do next?
Advance Praise
'Peter James has penetrated the inner workings of police procedures, and the inner thoughts and attitudes of real detectives, as no English crime writer before him. His hero, Roy Grace, may not be the most lively cop, nor the most damaged by drink, weight or misery, but he's one of the most believable' —The Times

The body of a woman is found in her bathtub and D. S. Roy Grace assigns the case to Temporary D.I. Guy Batchelor. Roy Grace's personal life with his son Bruno also features in the story. I felt something was not quite right with Bruno, but it was only hinted at. I am thinking maybe a thread for the next book?
The plot moved along at a good pace with twists and turns that kept the suspense up to the end. Brilliantly written with well developed characters, I enjoyed all the books in this series and although you can read just one, I recommend them all.
