Four suburban mothers conspire to cover up a deadly crime in Just Between Us, a heart-stopping novel of suspense by Rebecca Drake.
Alison, Julie, Sarah, Heather. Four friends living the suburban ideal. Their jobs are steady, their kids are healthy. They’re as beautiful as their houses. But each of them has a dirty little secret, and hidden behind the veneer of their perfect lives is a crime and a mystery that will consume them all.
Everything starts to unravel when Alison spots a nasty bruise on Heather’s wrist. She shares her suspicions with Julie and Sarah, compelling all three to investigate what looks like an increasingly violent marriage. As mysterious injuries and erratic behavior mount, Heather can no longer deny the abuse, but she refuses to leave her husband. Desperate to save her, Alison and the others dread the phone call telling them that she’s been killed. But when that call finally comes, it’s not Heather who’s dead. In a moment they’ll come to regret, the women must decide what lengths they’ll go to in order to help a friend.
Just Between Us is a thrilling glimpse into the underbelly of suburbia, where not all neighbors can be trusted, and even the closest friends keep dangerous secrets. You never really know what goes on in another person’s mind, or in their marriage.

Riveting psychological suspense -- a good friend will do almost anything for you, right?
Julie, Alison, Heather and Sarah find out just how much they are willing to risk when one of them needs help getting out of an abusive relationship. These four women are mothers and wives --close friends in a small suburban community. Drawn into the drama when they see the bruises on Heather's body, the others have no clue that they are jeopardizing everything to help her.
The narrative is very fast-paced and draws the reader in immediately. Told in alternating points of view, the characters reveal bits of their own history as things become increasingly tense and all are under severe strain as events spiral out of control. Each comes to regret the decisions they made on one fateful night. But for different reasons.
I really enjoyed this psychological thriller and will definitely look for more by this author. There were some not wholly unpredictable twists in the novel, but I liked the writing style and could easily identify with the women throughout most of the story. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't sleep without seeing how it all turned out.
Thank you NetGalley and Edelweiss for an e-Arc of this title. Psychological thrillers is the genre I'm loving right now. I'll read anything, but I find myself drawn into these. Some friends are "ride or die," but how far would you really go for your friends? If you suspected your friend was being abused, would you reach out? This is a tale of 4 friends, and I love that the narration alternates between all of them. We all think we know everything about our closest friends, but that's not always the case, and our own experiences color how we look at the world around us. This story has twists and turns, and I loved it.
How far would you go to help one of your friends? We women believe we would do anything to help a close friend--especially if suspected abuse was an issue. So when three of the four women believe Heather is being battered by her husband, they stop at nothing to cover up a crime and rescue her from a bad marriage. Told from alternating points of view, the novel slowly unravels the truth behind each of their facades (as don't we all have a little something we don't show the world?) until events spin out of control. Deftly woven and realistic, this one sucked me in from the first page and didn't let me go until the end!
