So, there's an adorable dragon all dressed up for Halloween and holding a carved pumpkin on the cover. SOLD!
Es Halloween, querido dragón / It's Halloween, Dear Dragon is a gorgeous little story for new readers, with all text in Spanish and English, with the exception of the activities at the end of the book which are only in English.
There's word repetition and colour recognition, along with a Reading Reinforcement section at the end of the story to guide the adult in helping their new reader get the most out of the experience. Beginning with the boy and Dear Dragon raking up leaves, then taking the reader through a variety of Halloween preparation activities before attending a party and flying home on a broomstick, Margaret Hillert has written a simple yet lovely story that is appropriate for her audience.
With brightly coloured and engaging illustrations by Jack Pullan, our sweet little dragon is clearly the star of the show. The illustrations complement the text well and will make you want to add a dragon to your family as well, if you don't already have one.
This is the first dual language early reader I've come across so I don't have anything to compare it to but from what I can tell, this book delivers on its promises and has magical elements that will ignite your child's imagination as well as improve their reading ability and comprehension.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley (thank you very much to NetGalley and Norwood House Press for the opportunity) in exchange for honest feedback.
As we head into the Halloween season families, libraries and educators need good books to entice young readers and this is right up that alley. The simple and brightly colored images are easy for the younger set to enjoy and the dual language is a great way to help either Spanish speakers or English speakers work on the other language. The only exception to that is the lessons at the end of the story are only in English.
Word repetition will help drive in those language skills. The colors and shapes in the illustrations provide further teaching lessons and are eye catching enough to hold those small attention spans. The Reading Reinforcement lessons at the end will help provide ideas on how to reinforce the lessons from the story. The story itself provides some great activity ideas you can do with your child to have fun during the season such as raking leaves, picking out pumpkins, decorating a pumpkin, baking and more.
It’s perfectly written for the intended audience and making education fun is always a plus!
Such a great book for 4-6 year old's learning English or Spanish.
Illustrations are simple and perfect.
Nice dialogue and story that simply explains Halloween and the autumn season.
Would be great to add to learning collections in libraries.
Really impressed and will recommend to school libraries as well.
