"This Book is a Keeper" Cathy Denver, Int. Review of Books *****
Geoff has created a readable romantic fiction set in colonial New Zealand. His historical facts are, for me, his greatest strength. The main characters are strongly portrayed and give a good insight into the struggles of the time, plus room for romance. I enjoyed the book. Easy to read and delightful. I recommend a look. J Doherty.
Forgiven gives an interesting insight into the Boer War and is an intricate part of a fascinating love story. It is an easy and enjoyable read. I read it over a weekend and enjoyed it immensely. Warrick.
Once I started reading it I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. A Fluty
I read this book and enjoyed it very much. It was easy to read whilst being thought-provoking in parts. Lawson can do "thought-provoking" without being incomprehensible, with Geoff, you do understand. He has an ear for dialogue and seems to understand women very well - and in addition, he has a very good grip on history. I'd recommend Forgiven and I'm not going to give away more! A well written, enjoyable book with just the right combination of a history lesson and a love story, presented in a way that will keep you turning the pages to learn more. The frequent changes in settings take a bit of attention to follow, but the characters are worth following. A few twists are thrown in to make things interesting. I'm finding myself to be quite a fan of historical fiction!
This story set in the space of one year from1898 and 1899 giving us two protagonists from New Zealand. It takes us back and forth between Richard Wilson’s adventures in South Africa during the Boer War and his meeting and growing relationship with Rachel Purdue before leaving for war. The story weaves back and forth with chapters sharing military adventures and chapters that capture the growing romance between Richard and Rachel. We follow along from the beginning of their courtship, separation between them due to the war and their reunion. The details and research for this book...impeccable. Highly recommended.
My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
