Description

For most of her life, Becca Monroe’s been running. The urge to see what lay beyond the next horizon took her away from Donner’s Mountain and the man she loved. Now, back for what will surely be her grandfather’s last Christmas, she’s caught in a tangle of unresolved emotions that leave her torn between the impulse to flee and the desire to stay.

Jack Donner never stopped loving Becca, even though she deserted him. Better than anyone else, he knows how cruel it would be to fetter her wild spirit, and he doubts she could ever be happy living in one place, on his mountain.

Can memories of Christmases past remind Becca what truly matters? And can love convince Jack to give her one more chance, even if it means risking his battered heart?

For most of her life, Becca Monroe’s been running. The urge to see what lay beyond the next horizon took her away from Donner’s Mountain and the man she loved. Now, back for what will surely be her...

It’s December, and I live in the south. So that means I need things other than the weather to get me into the holiday mood. And what better way to do that than romantic holiday stories?!

Becca Monroe has returned home after running away five years ago. Her beloved grandfather’s ill health has called her back to the small mountain town she grew up in, and back into the presence of the man she loved when she was younger. Jack Donner loved Becca, and hasn’t been able to stop, even though she disappeared without a word and knows she won’t be staying around. But feelings from the past surface quickly as they get reacquainted, just in time to celebrate Christmas together.

I really wanted to like this novella. Second chance romances are probably my favorite. But in order for a second chance romance to work, I need to understand why the hero and heroine are still hung-up on each other after all their time apart. I need to see some of their history, and I need to see what caused their relationship to break. Unfortunately in this story, I didn’t feel like I got enough of either. A couple of quick sentences isn’t enough for me to feel invested in the couple’s story. Granted, this is frequently a hard thing to do in a novella-length story. I liked the characters, and the writing was well done. There just wasn’t enough to the story for me to feel a connection with it.

This was a quick story. It was good for the Christmas holiday and second chances.

Jack and Becca have a past, and when she returns to help her dying father they are thrown together again. The story has potential, but it is very short. Feels like a section taken out of a larger book, and made me think of too many questions about their past. Would recommend if you want a quick Christmas story, but wish it would have been longer and more in-depth.

Christmastime on Donner’s Mountain by Laura Strickland is a second chance holiday romance read that brings together a couple that had never stopped loving one another in the years they had been apart. The book is one that is relatively short but with a past between them already in place the events move fairly quickly when the main character returned home to run into the love she’d left behind.

Becca was a character that didn’t want to be tied down years ago but hasn’t found her happiness in all the time she’d been away. Jack on the other hand was the homebody of the story with no urge to leave so the two had split apart. Things of course come boiling back to the surface when the two are trapped due to a snowstorm.

Quick read with a holiday feel as the story takes place just before Christmas. I wouldn’t have minded things slowing down a bit and adding more to Becca and Jack’s story but as it is it was still a nice little holiday read overall.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

This is a very short second chance romance story that takes place at Christmas time. I thought perhaps it was part of a series, but I don't think so. We are introduced to the two main characters and are informed quickly about their past relationship. They end up stuck in a cottage during a snowstorm and admit that they still have feelings for one another. Of course you know what happens next. Becca's grandfather, who is dying gives her some advice to ponder as an older relative often does and we have a happy ending. A bit too short and sweet for me.
