I love discovering new authors, who bring me into a world I’ve never been to with their incredible stories; “Secrets of Sand Mountain” is one of those unforgettable, magical stories. I loved how it was narrated by three different characters – Philip, Violette and Karl, and how unexpectedly their fates seemed to intertwine.

At first I wondered, what a young boy from a quiet Alabama town, his aunt Vi, who chose a life of recluse after suffering from a broken heart, and an escaped prisoner of war from an American camp Karl can have in common? I couldn’t be more pulled into the story as it started to unravel, the story of human kindness, when young Phillip decided to put his best effort to help his aunt out of depression; a story of trust and compassion, when the aunt and nephew collaborated to save their newfound German friend from the imminent danger; and finally the story of healing, when the whole family and even the town marshal came together to stand against an abusive father, an obsessed former boyfriend, and the dangers that Karl was still facing.

It’s one of the kindest stories I’ve read in years. I absolutely fell in love with the main characters and found myself rooting for their happiness and safety. I also appreciated how the Nazi regime and the horrors of war were shown through the eyes of a young German, who didn’t want to have anything to do with the regime, and yet had his life in danger multiple times because of it. The ending was absolutely perfect! I highly recommend this wonderful book!

I absolutely loved this book, I like the characters even some of the "bad" ones, I love that this is placed in the 40's and I love that the main characters had their own part to tell! This story took me back to my childhood and listening to my parents speak about their childhood, such a simpler more wholesome time compared to today. Everything about this book appealed to me from Philip's story as a young boy growing up in Alabama to Violette and Karl/Carl's story about going back to Europe and back to Phillip's story as a young man and on. Thank you for a great read!

This was a surprising book. I didn't expect to enjoy the storyline as much as I did. The characters were actually very memorable, and I felt as if I had know them in a previous time. I especially loved how the string of pearls was carried throughout the story.
