Description
English teachers: Looking for a new way to engage students? Need an adaptable module to fit into your term? Her Own Worst Enemy gets students practicing reading, writing, speaking, and listening through the analysis, rehearsal, and performance of an original one-act play.
Aida is a high-school student who wants to pursue a sensible career in science, but there’s a catch; she’s a great actress. When she’s invited to audition for a spot at a prestigious acting school, her friends and relatives are excited about the opportunity. Everyone has advice for her, but Aida must make her own decision about her future. Your students will love this relatable, fun, and funny play.
And as they read and prepare to produce it, they’ll do background reading on STEM careers and Liberal Arts majors and write analyses of each. They’ll learn key speaking skills such as the pragmatics of encouraging someone, as well as practice attentive listening and teamwork. They’ll dive into the world of theater through improv and blocking. They’ll also gain confidence as speakers.
Her Own Worst Enemy will make your students look forward to class.

Her Own Worst Enemy will debut at the 2018 TESOL Convention in Chicago Illinois and the IATEFL Conference in Brighton, UK. On our blog, www.alphabetpublishingbooks.com/news, we will be releasing audio clips from a production of the play, and encouraging teachers to share audio and video of their students putting on the play. We will also release and share a series of resources to help teachers put on the play. We'll also be travelling to regional English language conferences to do presentations about the book and the power of drama in language learning.
