Description
Reporter Leah Nash returns to her Wisconsin hometown after 10 years away—unfortunately, not in triumph. She says she quit, her ex-boss says she was fired. Either way, she’s out of a job. So, she accepts a temporary position at the weekly paper where she started. At least the slower pace will give her time to work on rehabbing her career. She thinks.
Then a nun from a school for troubled kids dies in a strange accident, leaving behind a cryptic message. Leah’s younger sister died at the same school years earlier, also under mysterious circumstances. Sparked by the nun’s note and her own sense of guilt over her sister’s death, Leah investigates. Soon she’s uncovered a small-town scandal, a murder, and a story that could be her comeback. She’s determined to expose the truth.
The problem is, someone else is equally determined to keep it buried. Leah’s always maintained that she’d kill for a good story. But will she die for one instead?
Fans of mysteries featuring strong female protagonists will enjoy following Leah Nash as she navigates storylines full of twists and turns. The series combines the familiar pleasures of a small-town cozy—a cast of recurring characters, a touch of romance, and total immersion in an imaginary small-town setting—with the sharper dialogue and edgier plot of a mystery thriller.

Taking pictures as they uprooted a tree, a body of a nun, was tangled into it. She knew her, and to find that she had been trying to get in touch with Leah. She had a clipping of Leah’s sister Lacey, in a book she wanted Leah to read, the questions of why and now her body indicate murder. Leah wanted answers, but someone didn’t want her to have them. For three years sisters didn’t connect, she stole, lied, till, she got placed with the nuns. Relief, she was out of the house, no more stealing, credit card, money, but now, what did Sister Mattea want Leah.to know. Plot that has many twisted lies woven into it, will keep readers guessing to the end. The characters, and setting gave s a good description of what was going on. Given ARC by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
An investigative reporter returns to her hometown to write at the local newspaper. Leah is a quick witted, smart thinker and is pulled in to investigate the death of a nun at a local school....the same local school where her own sister died five years prior.
This is the first of a series and I have already purchased additional books because I LOVE LEAH! She's a woman on a mission to right the wrongs and I'm here for all of it.
Review: DANGEROUS HABITS by Susan Hunter
(Leah Nash Mysteries Book 1)
DANGEROUS HABITS is the first in an exciting series set in small-town Wisconsin in a community on the declining edge of a failing economy, starring a smart, dedicated, obstinate, sarcastic, protagonist with whom I readily identified. Leah Nash is a journalist in her early 30's, a native of Himmel, Wisconsin, with a university degree, who has worked at print journalism in Grand Rapids and Miami. Probably she still would be, except she does not suffer fools gladly (not at all) and refused to let a neurotic boss unjustly accuse her of a potentially criminal act. So Leah finds herself back home in a shrinking community, covering small-town events and thankful for a job for the next six months.
The author suffused this series with so much emotions. She's not afraid to peel back the layers of her characters, nor to delve into serious crime and horrifying psychological disorders {might I say, evil}. Much of this story is heartwrenching, both Leah' s backstory and the ongoing events. I hated that such horrors happened, but they're true to life tragedies, crimes, and evil (just read your daily newspaper) and the novel is so fascinating I couldn't put it down, and leaped into the second in the series immediately.
Spannend erzählt, voller Wendungen. Gut ausgearbeitete Geschichte, sympathische Charaktere, mitreissender Sprachstil. Alles, was man braucht für eine schlaflose, aufregende Nacht...https://www.amazon.de/gp/review/R2K9BRQCVU9MUI/ref=pdp_new_read_full_review_link?ie=UTF8
I really enjoyed this book, little bit more action and scenarios than a "cozy mystery" but still enough twists to keep you interested while not being overly graphic (I have no issues with graphic but some readers do). I will be checking out other books from this author and continuing on with the series.
I received a copy on NetGalley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. #DangerousHabits #NetGalley
This thriller was hard to put down. Leah moves back to Wisconsin and is given a chance to investigate a nun's death at the school for troubled children her sister died at years earlier. The nun left acryptic message for Leah that wasn't delivered until after her death. Every time I thought I had the villan in my sights, other clues popped up. Kept me enthralled until the very end. I will certainly read the rest of this series.
Good writing and good story. Such unexpected twist and turns mad it for a good read. The conclusion and findings were unexpected, certainly disheartening. I recommend this book.
This is the first book in the Leah Nash series.
Leah Nash is a newspaper reporter who, due to unfortunate circumstances, has returned to her hometown. After covering the murder of a nun, she returns to the paper to find out that the nun had left her a message. When the message was left is anyone's guess because the receptionist is a bit lacking. The message is also vague. Its a newspaper article regarding her sister's death. Leah decides to start looking into why the nun left her this article and the more she digs, the more questions it raises. As she continues to chase after answers, it seems that no one is happy that she is looking into it. Will she find what she is looking for? Is the truth worth it in the end?
I found this story a tad slow to start, but it picked up. I couldn't put it down at that point, I had to know what happened. I liked it enough to continue with the series.
A promising start to a new series. Leah is a great narrator, and it's hard not to like her from the start. She might be a nosy reporter, but she brings new life to that role as she tries to get to the bottom of things. In a small town where everyone has secrets, that can be a dangerous drive to have. A solid mystery, and I look forward to reading more in the series and seeing how Leah grows and evolves.
Gripping and suspenseful! A very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters. The tension builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Will keep you swiping the pages furiously. Worthy of your TBR list.
