Description

After evidence disappears from a police locker, a man who is accused of brutally raping a popular actor’s daughter, walks free.

Hired by the actor, private detective Dan Reno’s job seemed simple enough: discover who took the DNA, and why. Problem is, from the beginning of the investigation, neither Reno, the South Lake Tahoe police, nor anyone else have any idea what the motivation could be that see the thug, Duante Tucker, get away with the crime. Not even Reno’s best friend, fellow investigator Cody Gibbons, has a clue.

When Reno and Gibbons tail Tucker, they learn the rapist is linked to various criminals and a deserter from the U.S. Marine Corps. But they still can’t tell who would want him set free, and for what reason.

Things get murkier when Tucker visits an Arabic restaurant whose owners are suspected terrorists. Then Cody’s ex-boss, a San Jose police captain, is found to with Tucker’s sister.

The clues continue to build until Reno and Cody find themselves targeted, which tells Reno he’s getting close.

The forces of evil are running out of time, and the action reaches a boiling point before an explosive conclusion that reveals a sinister plot and motivations that Reno could never have imagined.

Whilst Hard Prejudice may be the fifth book in the series, it reads easily as a stand alone.

Dan and Cody have really grown on me through this series. They are like family and I can see quite a difference, in Dan especially, since the first book. Whilst Cody is still very much enjoying the single life, Dan is settling down thanks to the lovely Candi.

I won't lie, some parts make for uncomfortable reading. A storyline to do with rape is never going to be an easy one. Whilst we get to see some of the devastation it leaves in its wake for the victim and her family, the story very much centres on Dan and Cody trying to find the culprit as well as the people behind fiddling with the evidence in the trial.

The case really takes some unexpected twists and turns that keeps the reader on their toes. I enjoyed how the author plays with us so things arn't quite as straight forward as they seem.

Hard Prejudice is a slightly more sombre addition to the series due to the nature of the story line. Packed to the brim with tension and action, Hard Prejudice makes for a thrilling and adrenaline fuelled read.

Another adventure from PI Dan Reno and his side kick Cody, loving this series, this case had them stumped, between rape, drugs, shoot outs, bombs, Taliban, Al Qaeda, it had everything that a good mystery should, well done Dave Staunton, I'll look forward to #6 😊

Many thanks to Bloodhound Books & Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Happy Publication Day! Hard Prejudice is book five in the brilliant Dan Reno series. I have been enjoying this series from the start and would highly recommend this whole series to you all. This series is best read in order.

It was great to be back in Dan’s world alongside Cody working with him aswell. Its been fun watching them both work and grow together throughout the series. Will they catch the rapist? Fast paced, thrilling story. Loved reading this one. It does contain long chapters though! It is a tough story to read in certain parts, with dark scenes as the story is dealing with a rape… Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading this story and look forward to the final chapter of this series.

Hard Prejudice by Dave Stanton
Dan Reno #5

Dan Reno, Private Investigator, is a man who takes cases many would not. He always goes in with good intentions but often finds himself up against some tough customers. Cody Gibbons, a friend from high school and also a PI, often ends up working with Dan on the same case. Having only read this and the previous book in the series I have to say that I am hooked. Sure, there is violence and some might consider some actions questionable but when it comes down to it Dan does have a moral compass and does “feel” when he is required to do something that he wishes had not been necessary to sustain his own or a loved one’s life.

This book hits close to home for me…in more ways than one. I know the places mentioned in the book and have driven through more than one of them. I remember the riots that in Los Angeles that were mentioned. I have lived in countries in the Middle East that have been impacted by war, bombs and strife and understand the fear of this reaching into and being experienced by those living in the West.

Dan and Cody are asked to find out who “lost” evidence in a trial. The trial was one in which a sadistic rapist got off due to the loss of the DNA that was necessary for conviction. While searching for the person responsible trips are taken to various cities in California and research is also carried out in Tahoe. There are car chases, shootouts, corrupt cops, prostitutes, gangsters, drug dealers, possible jihadists, explosions and other violence that occurs but throughout it all I was aware of the true friendship between Dan and Cody that is as close as if not closer than that of many brothers.

I think one of the main takeaways for me is that evil people are everywhere in the world and they no doubt always will be. There is no one cause for their being in the world or a solution for eradication of them. The fact that Dan and Cody and some of their friends, acquaintances and colleagues deal with such people and come out scathed but still positive makes for a solid story worth reading. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

5 Stars

Well what a series this has been so far and I can't believe we are now on book five. I have enjoyed each book featuring Dan Reno and it would be difficult to pick a favourite. Even though Hard Prejudice is part of a series I would still class it as a standalone as the characters history is weaved into this story easily which helps to avoid any confusion. However what I will say is that all of the books are worth reading and you will obviously get a deeper background on the characters if you do start at the beginning.

As ever Dan and Cody find themselves in trouble but they work so well as a team that it really makes this book all the more exciting. In this story both Dan and Cody are hired to find a rapist, as you would expect with this storyline there is going to be some darker content. It definitely provides an edge along with a tense and action packed plot that I have come to expect from this series.

The pacing was pretty good and at times very fast paced, there were parts where I was glued to my kindle as Dan and Cody found themselves right in the thick of it. In Hard Prejudice danger and trouble finds Dan Reno but what a story it makes!

Four stars from me!

With thanks to Sarah at Bloodhound Books for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My first book by this author and I'll surely be back to catch up on more of Dan & Cody's previous encounters! Such awesome characters and the comfortable relationship they have is clearly one with a colorful past. This is an awesome book for any crime/action lovers out there that kept me sucked in from page one. Never a dull moment, great characters.. a tough one to put down!

I really enjoyed this book, I have read all of the books in the series so far (it is a very good series by the way) and this is probably my favourite!

Whilst it is the fifth book in the series, you can easily read it as a stand alone, but if you do get the chance to read the other books I'd definitely recommend them!

The storyline in this one is tough and not everyone will enjoy it but I thought it was a well put together story, I really enjoyed the characters and I thought the whole book was excellent and I was gripped by the plot.

4.5 stars from me rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon!

Fast-moving PI crime thriller

Dan Reno is a private investigator and bail bondsman who seems unable to stay out of trouble for any length of time. His methods, while remaining strictly within the law, can be unforgiving.

When movie actor Ryan Addison approaches Dan, he is asked to investigate how the rapist of Addison’s daughter Lindsey managed to escape justice. He is also offered a huge bonus if the rapist, Duante Tucker, dies in the process. Dan is okay with the investigation but declines any implicit request to kill Tucker.

Almost as soon as he begins looking into how the local police lost the DNA evidence, Dan is contacted by this friend, Cody Gibbons, whom Addison has also retained. It makes sense for them to work together.

What follows is an all-action thriller with a high body count. There are a lot of characters on both sides, and each has their own agenda. It soon becomes clear that the case is not just about a rapist going free, but also involves drugs and terrorism!

Dan and Cody are likeable characters despite their flaws and working together they make for a very enjoyable novel. OK, sometimes it is far-fetched and lacking credibility, but isn’t that what we expect from this genre?

A satisfying and well-paced crime novel with lots of action.
