I loved looking through this book. I knew how to crochet as a child but I couldn’t remember how to do certain things. I took a class a few years ago and the instructor confused me so much that I couldn’t remember anything. Crochet 101 is the perfect book for beginners or those needing a refresher course in crocheting. The instructions are straight forward and the photographs are helpful. I can’t wait to practice making Granny squares.

Easy to access beginner's crochet guide. This guide doesn't only cover the basic stitches and patterns but also explains the different pieces of equipment available to use and which are best for particular circumstances. Dipping into colour theory is helpful.

Crochet 101 Master Basic Skills Easily through Step-by-Step Instruction by Deborah Burger
I am a published crochet designer and have done work for yarn companies and taught myself how to crochet.
Not sure at times if I'm really doing the stitches properly and second guess myself all the time.
Starts out with a table of contents where it has basics, putting it all together, traditions and abbreviations/symbols and glossary and index.
Like pictures as they start with simple things like a mug rug and talks about the basics.
Tells you what to expect and to have breaks and patience.
Diagrams are shown throughtout the book along with real photos. Chart of hook sizes and yarn weights is very informative.
Love easy project they start out with, so simple but it will build your confidence that you can do it.
Like troubleshooting tips along the way also. Stitches are explained and shown how to work them along with an easy project to do.
Each pattern has a title, summary and what you'll learn. Things you will need are listed, gauge, finished size and stitches used along with directions and tips.
Color photo preceeds the pattern.
Photographs are easy to view the item with background: colors are not to dark to see the details.
Stitches and patterns get more difficult as the book goes along and you should be able to follow it. Even reading a pattern by charts.
Love that there are so many projects to make, useful and practical for every home.
Hooded scarf would be my first project as I make things for the homeless and that is one thing they can use in the winter cold months.
Book finishes off with author bio and so many resouces of information.
A KEEPER!
Received this review copy from Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

This book is a really good reference for beginning or novice crocheters. I have been crocheting for many years but have never been able to decipher those pattern diagrams. I think the explanations in this book will resolbe that issue. The instructions are clear and understandable. It contains an abundance of reference material from the different types and weights of yarn to different sizes and types of hooks. It also has instructions on the different ways you can hold your hook while crocheting. There are many practice swatch patternns as well as several actual project patterns. There are sections on several different crochet types such as granny squares, filet and tunisian. I was disappointed that it doesn’t include any information on hairpin lace crochet but perhaps that is a 201 level book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to get started crocheting.

I have been crocheting for years, but still love to flick through the pages of a crochet book no matter how basic it is. For me, this book was teaching me things which I’ve known about for years. But for a crochet beginner, this book was absolutely perfect!

It gives concise instruction and clear accompanying pictures to help you along the way. It also gives information as to what all the different ‘tools’ are that you need to start your crocheting journey and lists the terminology, which can definitely be confusing if you don’t know what everything means!

I really enjoyed reading through this book and it has definitely rekindled my interest to get my crochet hooks and wool out and start making some granny square blankets! Would highly recommend if you are interesting in starting out in crocheting or if you would like to brush up on your techniques!

Originally published in 2012, this is a perfect learning tool for the new crochet student. It's set up for step by step learning and there is a project with each stitch you learn. Later chapters tell how to combine stitches and read patterns. Illustrations are well done and there is a glossary, yarn guide and ideas for various hooks and yarn combos. My only wish was a chapter for a left handed learner. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Crochet 101 is geared toward the absolute beginner and can be used also as a fantastic reference tool for the more knowledgeable crocheter. Basics are discussed first, covering hooks, notions and yarns. The most used stitches are then introduced one by one, with accompanying photographs, followed by a practice swatch project using that stitch to gain confidence. The Tips sections and the Troubleshooting sections visually showing typical problems which arise were especially useful.
As a beginning level crocheter, stitch key and abbreviations and symbol references were very welcome.
My favorite chapter was Chapter 7, where how to read a stitch symbol diagram was explained. It was also nice to see several of the later patterns presented in diagram form (which I personally prefer) along with the written instructions.

“Crochet 101” is the most comprehensive beginner’s book available, offering easy step-by-step instructions with photos by Deborah Burger, crochet guru and author of “How to Make 100 Crochet Appliqués.” This is a beautiful-to-look-at and info-rich guide for mastering the most basic steps of the craft.

Skills are learned by working on projects that start with easy techniques that get progressively more difficult as readers get deeper into the book. Sections cover yarn selection, hook types and sizes, other tools and accessories, crochet gauge, chaining, forming the basic stitches, and reading patterns-making. Online video tutorials are also offered as an adjunct. Highly recommended!

I have been considering having a go at crocheting for a while, so when I saw this book on NetGalley, I couldn't resist requesting it, in order to learn more and finally make up my mind. Certainly, based on what I've read here, I am keen to try and will look for some beginner's hooks the next time I go into town. (I also plan to add this book to my wishlist at TBD.) Crochet 101 is set out perfectly for the beginner. It starts with general information on hooks and yarn, before moving on to simple stitches. With each new stitch or technique there is a project or two to try, which allows you to create tangible items that demonstrate your progress. Many of the projects (which range from household items to clothing) hold appeal; they are something you would want to create and use/wear. At each stage there are clear instructions, accompanied by useful photo illustrations. There is also a link to view video tutorials, which further demonstrate techniques. Overall, Crochet 101 is an excellent resource both for those looking to take up crochet for the first time and for existing practitioners looking for new projects and ideas.

Highly recommended for a new crocheter or even and experienced one who needs refreshing.

I found Crochet 101: Master Basic Skills and Techniques Easily through Step-by-Step Instruction by Deborah Burger,
Its Brilliant if you are a beginner to crocheting. This book will teach you how to crochet through well illustrated projects, and there are 101 engaging projects to learn. I found this book very helpful and I've only been crocheting over a year now. I found this book easy to use and learnt a lot from it. A great book for beginners and those wanting to improve their skills.

This is a great book on basic techniques of crochet. I'm a lifelong knitter, and I wondered how easily I could learn the basics of crochet. I gave this book a test drive and successfully made a swatch of single chain stitch. The book also explains the mysteries of abbreviations, patterns, and symbols for the various stitches. I really wish the e-book edition had links to video demonstrations. However, this was a good basic book that takes the beginner step by step in learning crochet.

The edition I received from the publisher is the 2018 digital edition of the book which was originally published in 2012.

Burger describes this as a workshop in a book - and it is just that.

Crochet 101 begins with crochet basics. You will learn the terms and parts of a crochet hook, you will learn how to hold a crochet hook, and more.

There are three different ways to hold a hook. I apparently use the Knife or Overhand hold - who knew!

Burger then goes into different types of fiber. This is key when starting a new project.

You will then learn how to begin crocheting, and how to troubleshoot many common problems. This is great because there are photos with which you can compare your stitches; this way you can easily identify the issues with your crocheting and will then be able to fix the problem.

Next, Burger jumps right in to some very simple beginner projects. The "Chain Gang Boa" is a very easy scarf because it is a cluster of long, multi-color crochet chains.

After you have mastered the simple projects, Burger provides more challenging patterns such as lacy scarves and shawls.

There is no need to worry about getting your crochet projects 100% correct the first time; there are plenty of tips and troubleshooting notes along the way! Even seasoned crocheters will have to pull a few stitches from time to time. Burger makes it easy to identify what went wrong.

At the end of the book there is a a helpful glossary and icon dictionary, as well as a useful index.

Crochet 101 is great for beginners and intermediate crocheters. It feels like Deb is there with you to guide you through it all, start to finish. Highly recommended!

I love knitting, but crochet has always seemed difficult to learn.
This is book shows you step by step instructions, and how easy it is to achieve a nice looking project.
This is very helpful for beginners and people scare of the little hook. It is amazing what you can do, and all the options for shaping and adding textures that will be difficult with the two needle method.
There is no limit for what you can do.
Definitely recommend it.

This Crochet 101 book has so much great information and step by step instructions. I went from not being able to crochet rows to being able to finish a scarf. SO glad this book exists and I can use it to continue my crochet learning journey.

This is a wonderfully comprehensive book for anyone wanting to learn, or for anyone with basic knowledge who wants to expand their skills.

As someone who can crochet and often gets asked for help to learn I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Not only are there the usual how to make this stitch, but every stitch has a project to make so you can thoroughly practice than skill before moving on. There is also a mistakes guide... I often get sent pictures titled "what have I done wrong" and this book even has sections about the common mistakes, brilliant for someone who doesn't have a crocheter on the other side of social media.

Another nice surprise was the addition of tunisian crochet, great to see it in there when it has such a similar skill set.

All round a very good book.

This is a great book for beginners or as a reference guide to refresh your memory if you haven’t crocheted in a while. It clearly shows you what you will learn, what you will need to produce a great finished project and troubleshooting for when you run into a problem.
You’ll learn about tools, gadgets, crochet hooks and yarn. Holding techniques and finding the one that works for you. You’ll learn how to read a pattern from a diagram, guided from beginning to end.
Each lesson is taught and the next lesson is built upon the previous skill(s) learned. Lots of great pictures go along with each lesson. One of the issues I have always had when crocheting is counting the stitches and know what to and not to count, there is a picture which shows/explains it, now I really know! Included in this book is a link to videos showing each stitch and technique, a fabulous visual aid. Love this!
The projects start out easy and build as you learn. They are also, youthful, fun and relevant; there is a project to make a gift for everyone in your family: scarves, booties, stuffed toys, coasters and much more.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.

The perfect book for anyone who would like to learn how to crochet. The information in this book reaches from how to hold the hook and the yarn to basic projects learning basic and more advanced crochet stitches.

Step-by-step photos and instructions, as well as troubleshooting sections ease the learning process and will help any novice crochet enthusiast learn the stitches easily.

Don't let the rather unimaginative cover put you off - this is an excellent learn-to-crochet book. Although written for the American market, all UK and metric terms are extremely well covered and it's easy to translate all the patterns into UK versions and find all the yarn and equipment you need.

The instructions are extremely well explained, photographed and even videoed, with plenty of links to online videos that make the 3-D imagination required so much easier than trying to follow 2-D pictures in a book.

Some of the projects use rather bright 'traditional crochet colours' that remind me of stuff that was around in the 60s and 70s but may still appeal to those who like that look, but author Deborah has also included some of the modern effects - even one of the first basic patterns for a simple square coaster look fabulous when crocheted with more modern colours and then felted and would make superb Christmas gifts - you could churn these out by the dozen and have plenty of sets ready for this Christmas (I wirte in mid August)!

As you progress through the book, there are plenty of pattern ideas for home deco and toys, shawls/scarves, bags and garments, all with excellent pictures and detailed instructions. along the way and using a variety of yarn types from thickest chunky to fine filet work. I was slightly disappointed not to find a version of the lovely cream/white lacy tops that are fashionable, but make no mistake - after working through this book you could easily translate your skills into any other project or pattern.

Having read an online version, I'm definitely going to buy the spiral-bound book and make this my foundation book for crochet - for myself and for lending out. Highly recommended. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars would be the slight American bias and I'd perhaps like to see a few 'trendier' patterns - but then that's not the point of a book like this so it will still be my 'go to' book for learning new stuff.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Quarry Books for my unbiased opinion of the book. Where has this book been all my life???? I loved this book. I have been looking for a comprehensive soup to nuts book on crocheting. It takes you through from beginning to end and helps to spot problems before they are full-blown issues. The projects get progressively harder, but this is a great reference book that I will use and refer to for years to come! This book would make great Christmas gifts!

As a person who has crocheted for many years, I am often asked for recommendations of instruction books in crocheting. My pet peeve when looking through this type of book is that they do not always provide information clearly enough for the novice to understand so the ones I have recommended so far may be counted on one hand. I may need to go to the other hand because of this book. The basic information is well-written, the pictures are clear, and the diagrams and patterns are easy to follow. The author has also taken the time to demonstrate why certain things in crocheting should be done a particular way (i.e. how to hold the hook) as well as provide basic on other crochet techniques. This book is an excellent guidebook for the beginner or the person who may want to refresh their skills if they have not crocheted for a while. It will also make a great gift. Well done!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book that was provided by the publisher through Net Galley. However, the thoughts presented here are my own.

I was so thoroughly impressed by this book that I actually read it cover-to-cover in one sitting. I love everything about this book! The author tells you everything you need to know to get started (items needed, hook sizes, yarn types and sizes, stitch markers, tape measures, rulers etc.) then proceeds into how to hold the hook and the yarn. At each stage, she gives tips, crochet language, pictures of her stitching, troubleshooting and encouragement.

Each project starts with a what you'll learn and what you need box and walks you through the steps in a very easy to understand manner with pictures throughout. She offers valuable tips all along the way. You will learn how to decode the written directions with their abbreviations, as well as how to read chart instructions; how to finish off a project with various edges. The projects selected to reinforce what you've learned are actually things you might want to make!

As someone who has recently taken up has recently taken up crochet again (and am loving it!) this book is one of the best that I've seen. Between the author's clear instructions, and the many pictures, there is no doubt in my mind that anyone who picks up this book will feel comfortable crocheting at the end of it.

An excellent book! I'm going to buy it for myself.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Quarry Books for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I've been crocheting for a few years now, learning from online tutorials. As much as I like to think of myself as an advanced crocheter, my confidence boosted by the dozens of projects I've finished (I mean, you should see the mermaid tail blanket I made), there are some things that can take me aback when figuring out a pattern. Whether it's a stitch I haven't used before, a term I haven't heard before, or the simple question of "do I crochet into this first stitch, or nah", it can be a trial and error game at times. Which is why I think this book is so good, both for beginners and people who need a refresher.
It starts off with the basics, teaching you the anatomy of a crochet hook and yarn types. How to make the first loop, how to chain, everything that you might need to get started. It slowly builds your confidence with patterns for easy projects that use the stitches you just learned, and it offers a cute troubleshooting page with common mistakes (one look at the crocheting in the round mistakes and my cheeks turned red, cause the first time I tried it, it definitely looked that wonky). The chapter about reading patterns is very well done, the abbreviations and symbols portion is extremely helpful (and it includes the translations for the confusing UK vs US terminology which is a-plus cause you never know what kind of pattern you'll find), but my fave has to be the inclusion of the chainless foundation stitch and the chapter about edging, because I feel like both are important to know when beginning as they can be tricky to figure out, but knowing them can cut your stress levels in half.
I definitely recommend this book if you're interested in learning to crochet. It's a great place to start.

Well-designed and comprehensive instruction book about crochet! It starts with the very basics and concludes with more expert techniques. The photographs and diagrams are clear and easy to follow. Techniques are introduced and is immediately followed up with a project to reinforce the new technique. In many books all the instruction is laid out in the first section of the book with all of the projects in subsequent sections which makes for a lot of flipping back and forth trying to locate the technique referred to in the project. Keeping the instructions close at hand is a very student-centered approach. Kudos to the author!

Sadly I could not download this book on any of my hand held devices so I could not review it adequately. I looked at it in brief on the website and agree that it would be a great book for my mum.

I've been teaching myself how to crochet by watching YouTube videos and some of my projects have turned out a bit wonky. Thanks to the Look, Learn & Create Crochet by Deborah Burger's book I have figured out some of the mistakes I've made thanks to the Troubleshooting explanations. The Troubleshooting tips also include photos giving examples of what could have gone wrong. In one example a photo shows chains that sprials or twists and how to fix the problem.

I also loved her suggestions on how to pick yarns colors and how value plays apart in creating a harmonious and eye pleasing project.

At the end of her book she writes about Tunisian Crochet and Threadwork.

I also loved how the author writes in "plain" language so a somewhat new crocheter, like me, can understand the crochet directions.

Throughout her book you will find proects using the newly taught techniques. Some of the projects you'll find include:

"Chain Gang" Boa
Phunky Phlowered Phone Carrier
Any Foot Softly Slippers

Recommend.

l am an avid crocheter and learned from my Mom. I even learned some new things in this book. I really like it has the conversions for the hooks, yarn weights and information and how to read a diagram. It has step by step illustrations on crocheting and wonderful projects for beginners I like the Bright and Bold Coasters, The Phone Carrier, The Slipppers, The Wildflower Shawl and so many more. Each pattern starts you off with what you will learn from the pattern (new stitches and other information, what you will need hooks, yarn, notions and abbreviations of the stitches and techniques. Each pattern is beautifully illustrated with some step by steps. This book even shows how to filet crochet and Tunisian (used to be called Afghan Crochet) which was very helpful to me. Crochet is becoming a lost art and I am happy to see this book and hope it will help others to learn to crochet.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love that this book directs you to a web page with videos of all the projects in the book. I like the video to learn a new stitch, but I like the book to use as a reference. With the book, I can easily go back to find the type of stitch, the type of yarn and how much yarn I need for a specific project.

There is a good variety of projects to choose from in this book. I have read a lot of crochet books and this one is defiantly a favorite. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn to crochet or to use as a reference for stitches and patterns.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've always wished I'd learned how to crochet, instead of knit. It always seems like the patterns I like are crocheted. This book looked like the perfect way for me to learn to crochet, so I was interested in reviewing it. I was not disappointed in the instructional material in the book. Illustrations are abundant (for every step) and it seems to gradually introduce skills, rather than try to do too much all at once. There is also a link to a whole list of online instructional videos for each skill. The only slight disappointment was that I wasn't that fond of the projects included in the book. I don't think I'd want to make any of them. But, for learning to crochet, this might be worth it!

Great book for beginners! Very nice step by step photos and easy projects with each stitch learned. A wonderful way to learn the art of crocheting using thread to yarn.

This book is a true beginners book, that is not to say that experienced crochet workers will not find it helpful. It is a great book which starts at the beginning with very basic instructions such as hooks, wool, and the chain stitch, having mastered the chain stitch, there is a project to do, and on it goes explaining each stitch, project and building on the skills with increasing/decreasing, crochet in the round until all the very basic stitches are mastered.
The second part of the book includes and explains other stitches, motifs, lacy, and Tunisian crochet.
It is fabulously photographed, with lots of information and laid out in a very easy and regulated fashion, it is written in the US and used crochet terms for this country - this is explained in a small box at the back of the book -it does not confuse the issue by explaining the difference in language throughout the book. I follow the UK language and I had no trouble following the instructions.

Crochet 101 by Deborah Burger should be the first book you pick up when you want to learn crochet. Not only is the book helpful but the author offers two hours of online techniques and project tutorials. There is advice for choosing crochet hooks as well as charts regarding yarn weights and how they compare to each other which I found extremely helpful. There is a section regarding other notions that will be useful in your journey.

There are over 60 pages of crochet basic lessons, more pages combining lessons and reading patterns in addition to patterns for cowls, slippers and shawls. The final chapters include lessons in finishing touches and filet crochet. Ms. Burger also offers tips and tricks for success. The photographs are clear and the diagrams are specific. This is a terrific book.

I would like to thank Quarto Publishing Group, Deborah Burger and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

You can’t go wrong with this book whether you are a beginner at crochet or an old hand. I am a master knitter but fairly new to crochet. This book has excellent instructions and photos. I also really appreciate the “wrong” stitch samples. Addresses a lot of rookie mistakes with a positive cheerful tone. Some unique projects but best as a welcome to crochet primer.

I learned basic crochet 50 years ago but all I was taught was long flat projects. Today's crochet world is not your Grandma's crochet! I'm teaching my grandchildren and nieces and a few nephews basic crochet now and this book is an excellent reference for them. I'm very happy with this book and would recommend to anyone looking to learn or teach crochet skills. Ms Burger does an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating basic skills while setting the student up to progress to more difficult projects as they learn.

I love this book! I learnt to crochet as a child, but then teenage years got in the way and I forgot what do and there’s so many lovely patterns out there I want to try. This book takes things one step or chapter at a time, with troubleshooting and where your practice will end in a completed project.. My only concern/Issue is that I am unsure whether this is teaching English or US stitches, which will obviously make a difference when using patterns from outside of the book. Other than that i’d Highly recommend this book.

This is a really excellent beginner's guide to crochet. I'm a competent knitter, but have never been able to get my head around crochet, and this book was a perfect introduction to the craft.

I loved that it started with a guide to the kinds of yarn and tools you would need, which would be so helpful if you were starting completely from scratch. It's great that the author took this time to explain what can otherwise be an overwhelming variety of options - she even goes into the pros and cons of particular hand positions! The pictures and instructions are very clear and easy to follow - far more so than any guide I've seen before. There are also some troubleshooting sections when new ideas are introduced, so you can diagnose where you've gone wrong, if something doesn't look right!

Once the basics have been introduced, the book moves on to projects to help you learn new techniques. The projects build up in difficulty, and each one is really well illustrated with clear photos. Techniques covered incude chains, rows, crochet in the round, granny squares, picot borders, seaming and more. There's a clear explanation of how to read charts for patterns, and how to create your own projects using different stitch patterns. I feel like once you've worked through this book, you'll be well on your way to achieving any crochet pattern you like!

Crochet 101 is a new tutorial book in the Look, Learn & Create series by Deborah Burger and Dee Stanziano. Released 1st sept, 2018 by Quarry Books, it's 192 pages and available in ebook, paperback and spiral bound formats. Purchase of the book gives access to online tutorials and additional content, which is a neat additional support for the beginning crocheter.

I'm a lifelong fan of fibre arts and crafts. For people who aren't so lucky as to have a handy family teacher or friend nearby, well written tutorial books can be a great substitute. This book is clearly written in accessible and non-confusing language with clear illustrative photos. It presupposes zero familiarity with crocheting and starts with the basics.

The introduction provides a visual and written description of tools and materials. There's an included gauge chart and photographs of different (well defined) types of yarn. Vocabulary terms are well presented in sidebars which are tied to the pages or projects they're referring to, to minimize confusion.

The instruction part of the book begins by showing how to hold the hook and yarn, and refreshingly says 'there is no absolute correct way', do what feels most natural. There are also useful sidebars with troubleshooting advice and tips scattered throughout the book. The very beginning technique and glossary sections cover roughly 10% of the page content. and are followed by some really clever and appropriate project tutorials. The chainstitched scarf project really made me grin. I'm a long way away from being a beginner, but I am going to make a few of them for myself or for gift giving.

The next section combines several techniques into slightly more advanced projects (hats with crochet flower embellishments, patterned projects, combined stitches, etc). These projects are also well within the realm of possibility for a keen beginner.

The next section provides an overview of higher gauge work including threadwork doilies, filet crochet and an intro to Tunisian crochet.

With any solo-learner tutorial it's vitally important that the book be as error free and clearly written (and photographed) as humanly possible to avoid overwhelming frustration for the reader. I would have no trepidation giving this book to a complete beginner.

I am also impressed that more advanced crocheters will find appealing projects which are useful and beautiful. I really liked the felted mug coasters as well as many of the other projects.

Five stars, unreservedly recommended.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Interesting useful crochet starter book. Lots of instructions and pictures to follow. Explains the different yarns and hooks to use. Some projects to follow and very useful waistcoat instructions as it included the different sizes, rather than a one size fits all.

Has the English equivalent for the stitches at the rear.

I received this book from netgalley in return for a honest review.

Brilliant for reminding me how to do certain stitches. Definitely a good go to guide for crochet beginners to advanced crocheters.

An overview of this book seems that I would find it very helpful. I especially like the stitches shown in varying colors so that one can see how the stitches flow from one row to the next.

Such a useful and basic book for any beginner. Have struggled to follow multiple videos but the photographs really make this book much easier.

This is a really fantastic book, and I'm grateful to NetGalley and Quarto for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The book begins with detailed explanations of basic concepts like terminology, yarn types, and necessary tools. It's all simply explained, with good diagrams and pictures throughout. Crucially, it also gives you a link to the Quarto website where there are 30 videos showing the various stitch types in live action. This is such a great idea! While the step by step pictures in the book are very detailed, they can never replace being shown it in real time. I've had a hard time getting to grips with crochet before, but the videos make it easy to understand.

Once you're all set with the basics, the book leads you through several simple projects. Each project is designed to teach you one or two skills, without overwhelming you with unfamiliar crochet shorthand and multiple types of stitch. They build on each other until the crocheter has a good basis to work on more complicated patterns, which the book also includes. I found these patterns to be a little old-fashioned at times (a crocheted vest has not been the height of fashion for a long time, if ever), but there's no reason you can't adapt the projects with your own ideas. It finishes up with more unusual styles of crochet, like threadwork and Tunisian crochet.

I haven't had time to work through the projects in this book yet, but I feel excited to give it a try and with the videos to help, I think I'll actually be able to figure out crochet this time!

One of my favorite crafts is crochet. It is easy to carry along with you in many cases and while it can be quick to learn there’s always a new stitch around the corner to master. With Crochet 101 you will be able to learn all of the basic stitches and build upon them.

After a brief introduction and a quick description of the lessons to follow, the book then begins with Crochet Basics. This section gives you an introduction to crochet tools like hooks, yarns, and threads, a yarn vocabulary list, and notions.

Start To Stitch offers various suggestions on holding your crochet hook, holding the yard, and the slip knot. A brief list of various crochet language terms is also included.

The Chain Stitch is the first instruction with several step-by-step photographs to help you along the way. The instructions also include a quick reference, tip, and more crochet language terms. At the end of the lesson is a troubleshooting guide with ideas on how to fix various problems you might come across.

The Crochet Basics section continues along with several projects to build your technique. You will be working single crochet, double crochet and even double crochet motifs.

The next section, Putting It All Together, builds on your basic skills. International stitch symbols are introduced with the information on how to use them, and more basic stitches are added.

I liked how the various instructions and patterns had both the standard pattern and the chart pattern included.

More and more patterns are being created with the chart which I find is much easier to read and visualize. Learning how to read these charts will become a valuable skill. But of course, anyone wanting to work on an older pattern will need to read the standard, harder to decipher, written instructions. Learning that skill will be invaluable as well.

Useful Guides And Tutorial

It was also very useful to have troubleshooting guides included at the end of each tutorial so you can easily learn how to fix errors or imperfections. The “What You’ll Learn“ and “What You’ll Need“ are also very helpful in giving an overview of what to expect from the lesson.

At the end of the book is a list of Abbreviations And Symbols and term conversions from US to UK. A Stitch Key provides a legend for the crochet pattern charts and is followed by a Glossary of Terms and the Index.

This is undoubtedly an excellent resource for anyone learning crochet. For anybody who is familiar with crochet but not yet adept, it will be an excellent go-to guide for reference. There are several fun projects included, most should stand the test of time and be usable many years from now.

I do not crochet, I knit, so I felt if I could understand this book, that would be a good sign, as it was supposed to be for beginners.

It took one by the hand, and very gently lead me along. It gave really good advice that I wish had been given to me when I started to knit, such as when buying a skein of yarn, have the shop rewind it for you, otherwise you will go crazy trying to knit from it.

The directions are very clear, the step by step steps have photos to guide the way. All in all, an excellent first book for those who want to take up the craft.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I love this book. Caveat: I already know how to crochet, although I have my difficulties with certain actions. This book helped me overcome those difficulties and get good looking, evenly spaced crochet pieces within a few hours.

The explanations are easy to follow, the accompanying pictures help a tremendous amount. The projects ... well, taste differs and not everything is for me, but for an absolute beginner it's structured wonderfully. You work your way up from the basic technique to more difficult stitches, thus learning a solid basis for further crochet projects.

Would recommend, would buy for myself (I might even get a hard copy, as I think it's easier to look up things this way).

I received a free copy via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion. I love this book.

'Crochet 101' By Deborah Burger is a very useful book for beginner crocheters. My mom was a crocheter. When I was a child I used watch her so I thought I knew about crocheting but I was unable to master the craft. Obviously I was clueless. 'Crochet 101' answered many questions that I had about the type of yarn or thread used to the appropriate type of crochet hook needed. The many photos, diagrams and narrative explanations made each point understandable. Maybe this time I'll master crocheting. I am well on my way with the help of this wonderful book.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review. Above is my honest review.

From picking yarn and fibers to finding the right crochet hook for you, this book has all the basics a person needs to get started and be successful with crocheting. My favorite project was what the author called the Roll Brim Cloche and it’s a hat with some flowers on it. And I loved what she called a Flower Power Retro Beanie. It was so nice that she included “wet blocking” instructions for the Windflower Shawlette. There are many other parts of this book as well that makes this a great book to check out for your craft library.

Great way to learn how to crochet. Interesting and detailed information. Great pictures to help in learning. Would recommend.

Easy to follow book, with a lot of step by step photos. Overall, a useful book, but a lot of history and facts that have to be waded through. Skimmed the first part, and got to the steps. Interesting, but not a lot of patterns that leaped out at me. Sadly, reminded me of ones my older sister did in the early 70s. Still though, a good how to for a beginner's library. Would recommend.

This is the perfect help book for those wanting to learn how to crochet. Written in an easy to follow style and supported with very clear images this step by step guide will soon have the first timer on their way to making their own special items.
I am a little into the past so naturally my favourite section was reading about crochet traditions. I also felt the patterns and tips would be handy even for the more experienced person.

I can’t even tell you how many attempts I’ve made at trying to learn how to crochet. For some reason I just can’t pick it up the way I picked up knitting. Why am I lamenting my lack of crocheting skills? Mostly to help you realize how helpful Crochet 101 was for me. I tried following the instructions provided and I actually had some success! I’m by no means a master now, but I made so much more progress than I expected to. I think that I’ll have to go over the basics once again (or you know, a few dozen times) but then I’ll b able to move on to more complicated designs. Hopefully I’ll luck out and by the Deborah Burger will have published a few books of crochet patterns for me to follow.
I love how all the instructions were set out in a step by step manner. Not only did it make it easier to follow this way, but say you screwed up and had to go back a few steps…well it’d be easy to find the last time you did things correctly (I swear this didn’t happen to me).
Did I mention that there are online tutorials to help supplement the book? Words can’t even begin to describe how excited that made me. That’s a perfect touch, and will prove to be incredibly useful, both for the basics and the more complex steps.
