Description
Being the daughter of a megalomaniac isn’t easy. Liaena Griffin suffers abuse from her father and suspicion from his adversaries, the Shays. She’s always admired them, especially enticing Kai Shay, and needs their help to save her mother. Convincing them she’s not her father’s evil puppet won’t be a simple thing.
Kai has never trusted Liaena, though she attracts him like no other woman. So when she offers to be their spy in exchange for rescuing her mother, his misgivings multiply. They can’t pass up this opportunity in their fight to prevent Webster Griffin from dominating the galaxy. But keeping his hands and heart to himself may be the greatest challenge he’s ever faced.
As the epic conflict between their families draws to a close, Kai and Liaena struggle to find common ground. How do they save loved ones from a tyrant’s rule without falling for each other?

This series with its intriguing mixture of hunger games and star wars is totally up my alley. From the first book of the trilogy I have avidly devoured the series.
Kai along with his sister Sin and others they've rescued from Quasicore are secretly working to destroy Quasicore. Both twins are definitely surprised when Liaena Griffith the daughter of the despot who rules Quasicore throws in her lot with them. Is this a monstrous scheme to set up the Shays to fail?
As the story progresses Kai is hard put to resist Liaena especially when he learns of some of the emotional and physical abuse she's been subjected to. Even as I loved the series and lapped up everything the author had to offer, Ms. O Leary was still able to take me by surprise with her ending.
If you enjoy space opera this series will definitely hit all the right spots for readers.
Wow, what a great ending to this trilogy! Dawn of the Red Sun is the last book in Ms. O’Leary’s Sunscapes Trilogy. In this series, the author has created a complex future world filled with three dimensional characters. I highly recommend the whole series.
Dawn of the Red Sun is Manakai’s and Liaena’s story. I loved how Kai was so open and forthcoming with his affections of Liaena even though he believed that he was possibly playing into her deception. But, he just couldn’t help himself from revealing his true emotions. And, Liaena’s hesitation to accept Kai’s affections as his true feelings was quite believable given the horrible abuse she had suffered throughout her life. Throughout the story, you get to learn more about Liaena’s depth of feelings, her strength, and her vulnerability. She has become possibly my most favorite character of the series.
Dawn of the Red Sun was a great mix of character development, relationship building, romance, and action. Although, I do wish there had been a bit more action or that the action scenes had been drawn out a bit more. Ms. O’Leary’s writing is very good and there were no issues with the editing.
This story can be read as a stand alone as the characters are introduced in a way that you know who is who. However, if you choose to start with this book you may feel a little lost with the setting and situations the characters are in. I recommend reading the entire series, it is worth it. Reading this book made me realize how much I have missed the Shay twins and their world. Reading about the conclusion of Sinsudee’s and Del’s relationship made me go back and start reading Last Chance (The first book in the series) again.

I jumped into this series at the end...I know, but I do it a lot!
I absolutely loved the characters. I liked the fact that Liaena was such a diverse character. She was someone who from the outside seemed to be one person, but truly was trying to help as many people as she could while not inciting her father's wrath. The fact that she was able to survive him and make it so that he thought she was hurting others truly makes her intriguing. I did like that she was human and that her attraction to Kia was something she had no clue what to do with.
Kia was a great H , although at first I thought he was going to be less, because he fought so hard against how he felt for the enemy's daughter. When he began to see the cracks in her facade and realized what truly was happening to her it was a relief and the reader gets to see more of his true character.
All the characters kept your attention and they were well rounded and unique. I liked that this was sci-fi as well but with modern day problems and that it felt believable and established. I would completely recommend this series and will be getting the first 2 books to read as well.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free ARC from Netgalley.
This sci-fi romance was tense with the heroine being a double agent against her own father and the hero not sure if he can trust her yet being attracted to her.
I was lost a bit with the extra characters apparently having their own stories but I caught up along the way.
The villain must be a psychopath.
